Rating: Summary: Great Flick! Review: This was by far the most entertaining movie I saw in 2002. I laughed alot, and I even cried a couple of times. This is one of those movies that I just didn't want to end.As for the people who reviewed the movie and critisized it for not reflecting what Greek people are really like; THIS IS A MOVIE. THIS IS ENTERTAINMENT. The characters are exaggerated, yes, but again, this is to entertain us, not to attempt to educate us on Greek culture. Get over it! Everybody should see this movie!
Rating: Summary: Deja vu... Review: As a red-blooded American male who has a Greek bride, I can assure you that this movie isn't far from the truth. When I read early reviews on this film, I decided to take my wife to see it. We had our best cinema experience ever, watching this film, and we saw a lot of our own courtship trials flashing on the screen in front of us with side-spitting hilarity. My wife and I could hardly wait for this DVD to come out, and I plan to surprise her with it on Valentine's Day!
Rating: Summary: Read the bad reviews, then find out why the movie is great.. Review: I have to disagree with some of the points made in the bad reviews of this movie. Yes, the characters are a bit exaggerated, but that's what makes this movie so much *fun*. Watching Toula's family and how they reacted to her surprise engagement reminded me of my relatives. I am Greek and though much of my family lives in America, they still live as if this were Greece; they have not changed one bit since coming to America. Toula's family, like mine, is extremely close-knit. Every Greek mother dreams of her daughter marrying a nice Greek boy and producing gorgeous Greek babies. Their house was a bit tacky but it added to the humour of this movie, not the gag effect that some experienced in watching the picture. It also is not true that "real" Greeks do not like this movie, as I have read plenty of stories claiming this movie is turning out to be a hit. What is a "real" Greek anyway?? Am I not a "real" Greek because I live in America?? I don't think so.. after all, the only "real" Americans are the Native Americans, so that makes most of the population "not real," doesn't it? So "warm as yellow" from St. Spyridon Church, are you "real?" (And by the way, I go to a Greek Orthodox church too.)...
Rating: Summary: One of the best films of the year. Review: I really enjoyed this movie.
Rating: Summary: Excellent and funny. Review: I really don't know why some previous reviewers rated this film poorly. While a movie can be evaluated differently, by different people, the justification behind the one-star reviews makes me wonder whether the reviewers truly saw the movie. First of all, I am a Greek-American, born in the U.S. and reared in Greece until the age of 18 (now I am almost 36.) True, "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" does not demonstrate an authentic Greek wedding, as performed and celebrated in Greece, but this is not about the wedding, anyway. I don't know how Greeks, in Greece, feel about this movie, but I haven't heard, or read, any negative reviews either. Besides, this is a movie about a Greek family in the U.S., not Greece. As one reviewer implied, this story could have happened to anyone with strong ties to a culture. Getting the parents' blessing is very important, and the movie addresses that very clearly. Do all the Greeks care demonstrating that every word in English has Greek root? Absolutely NOT! Are there Greeks who enjoy this? Oh, YES, and I have met several of them; they are more fun to talk to than it appears in the movie. That said, I can assure everybody that even though "My Big Fat Greek Weeding" exaggerates some of the conflicts among the members of a Greek-American family, it is not far from the truth. My wife, who is not Greek-anything, can testify, from her own experience. She loves this movie because she sees much of what she experienced before, during, and after our wedding in Greece. We could actually write a book about it:-) I have not bought the CD yet, but saw the movie twice. It is funny, down-to-Earth, and for the most part, sincere and genuine. While mostly I enjoy action, [some] sci-fi, and non-romantic comedies, I give this one 5 stars. "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" will not disappoint, mainly because of its simplicity. Am I the only one who says so? I don't think so... The theaters, where I watched "My Big Fat Greek Wedding", were filled with the laughter of the viewers throughout the entire movie. The evidence in favor to this movie has been pretty strong.
Rating: Summary: Ignore the downers in other reviews - This film is a hoot! Review: I've read the reviews for this movie on Amazon, and boy am I glad I saw the movie first and that I make up my own mind. This movie was fun, moving & romantic. I'm not going to pop out the thesaurus and fill this review with over-large wording, just give this movie a try and I know you'll love it. After all, how can ALL the people who went to the theaters be wrong?!?
Rating: Summary: FUNNIEST MOVIE EVER!! Review: THE FUNNIEST MOVIE I EVER SAW!! IT WAS GREAT SEING THE MOVIE IN THE THEATRE WITH A BUNCH OF GREEK FRIENDS. THE WHOLE TIME EVERYONE IN THE THEATRE AND MYSELF WERE LAUGHING. THIS IS A MUST BUY AND I CAN NOT WAIT TO GET IT TO WATCH IT AGAIN AND ADD IT ON TO MY DVD COLLECTION. THIS MOVIE IS A MUST FOR ALL PEOPLE WHO LOVE COMODIES!
Rating: Summary: Fun and Funny! Review: This is a wonderful film, not a classic, but one that you can't help but watch and enjoy. This tour of a wonderful greek family and its desire to get their daughter married off is a wonderful escape from everyday life. The whole cast is terrific and the script flows very well. Although classified a "chick film" there are more than enough laughs for everyone. Nia Vardalos has done a great job writing and acting in this movie. This is one wedding you don't want to miss.
Rating: Summary: An unexpected delight of a film! Review: Laugh out loud funny, touchingly real and emotional, this simple love story will make you want to stand up and cheer. The actors are not big names, which makes this even more enjoyable. If you are single you'll find yourself yearning for the chance to meet your dream mate. And if you're married, you will relive the magic of meeting and falling in love all over again. When this couple first meets, you keep your fingers crossed that they will fall for each other. Despite the clumsiness of the girl, who is really not homely, just a bit out of style, you can't help but find beauty in her. Hilarious scenes of family hysteria over the details of the big event such as wedding inviations, bridal party plans and guest lists will keep you rolling. You don't have to be Greek to relate to this one. Not your average comedy, this story has heart and soul and you will love it.
Rating: Summary: Sweet Home Greece Review: This wonderful romantic comedy about a woman's hilarious struggle to find her identity and one true love--while trying to deal with her crazy Greek family--was written by, and stars Nia Vardalos (Meet Prince Charming, Men Seeking Women), adapted from her one woman play. Thirty years old and unmarried, Toula Portokalos (Vardalos) is the biggest concern of her traditional Greek family. Toula knows there is more to life than marrying a Greek man, having Greek babies, and making Greek food, so she enrolls in a college computer course, and improves her appearance. She attracts the attention of a high school teacher, Ian Miller (John Corbett of Sex and the City)--a vegetarian who isn't Greek. Toula tries to keep their relationship a secret, especially from her overprotective father, but her extended family ultimately finds out. When Ian proposes, Toula accepts, and the whole family is thrown into utter chaos. This leads to many hilarious complications and a sweet, touching finale. What makes My Big Fat Greek Wedding so special is that almost anyone can relate to the situations and the characters, which just adds to the film's charm. It is a wonderfully written, beautifully acted, and touchingly real film. Of course all the hype is a bit much and its tremendous success a bit shocking, but I can't say this film doesn't deserve it. Truly wonderful!!!
