Rating: Summary: Thank God someone finally said it! Review: I can't understand why there are some people who were embarassed by the "stereotype" portrayed here. It was the funniest portrayal of coming out of one's shell, falling in love, dealing with the lunacy of getting married I've ever seen. As a tortured bride myself, I know many people appreciated it for what it was: hysterical. And for those of us that can't laugh especially when we see ourselves on the screen for all the world to see: lighten up! You would have to live through 5 Big Fat Greek Weddings like I did to understand!
Rating: Summary: A pretty mediocre and bored movie Review: don't know what caused the fuss about this movie. the storyline is very hollow, shallow and boring. the greek families were all ridiculed by the bad screenplay writers and directing is also poorly executed. acting actually [stinks] in general, only the young non-greek male guy looked quite normal and likable. don't know why making all the greeks looked like clowns and not funny at all, suppose this is a movie made in 21st century instead of 100 BC. was conned into renting one by so-called the finally proved shallow reviews and totally disappointed.
Rating: Summary: Great movie! Review: Being a "real" Greek myself I have to say I loved the movie. Simply put, it is funny. Do I think it is necessarily indicative of all aspects of Greek American life? No. However there are a lot of aspects that are true to life. The fact that the father makes everyone aware of the Greek root words is absolutely true to our lives. The part that I didn't find so accurate is the way the grandmother "yiayia" was regarded. What the Greeks went through with the Turks is in no way funny and is much like poking fun at the Holocaust. Overall, it made me laugh a lot both times I saw it as it did with everyone I know that has seen it.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful and sweet! Review: I really liked this movie! I related to her having low self-esteem and feeling like a wallflower. After making positive choices, she gained confidence in her abilities and looks. Others started to notice how wonderful she really was. You also get a big look into large family dynamics... This was a sweet, romantic and wonderful movie. I recommend it!
Rating: Summary: A Fine Family Film. Review: Hollywood doesn't do very well when it comes to making movies about families that people actually enjoy watching. To paraphrase Bruce Campbell, I think it's all the spores that are effecting the brains of the L.A. sub-culture. So when a wonderful little movie like MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING comes along and ends up breaking all kinds of records and earning tons of money, it really shouldn't be any surprise to anyone. I saw this movie in the theatre three weeks before the video came out and it was the hardest I've laughed in a movie theatre since last fall. Now granted, the plot of the movie is true to formula, perhaps even unoriginal. Also granted that many members of Toula's (Nia Vardalos) family come of as loud and obnoxious and that the film is full of stereotypes. With that all said, the film works exceedingly well and is hilarious to watch. The movie works so well because the characters in the film are so real and believable. Some find this hard to believe because they've really never been a part of a family. However, for anyone who is a part of a family (whether from a large one like Toula; a small one like Ian; or somewhere in the middle) this film is sure to strike a positive cord. MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING is a great comedy because it knows just what type of movie it is and doesn't pretend to be anything else. It's a very real film; one that most people can relate to in some form or fashion. Of course it's formulaic, because that's the way life is--you know the whole circle of life thing. I understand that there are some people who don't like the movie very much. However, I don't understand why there are so many people who have given this film a negative review at Amazon[.com]. Do you people actually do any real living? As a side note, kudos to Tom Hanks and wife Rita Wilson for helping bring this picture to the big screen. It just goes to show just how talented of a guy Hanks is; not only is he the best actor in Hollywood, he's also a decent director, and now he's got a really successful credit as producer under his belt as well.
Rating: Summary: banal garbage Review: Should have gone straight to video. A travesty that panders to the lowest common denominator.
Rating: Summary: My Big Fat Greek Wedding DVD Review: The movie is great! Seems like anther chick flick, but it is! It's like LEGALLY BLONDE, MAID IN MANHATTEN, and SWEET HOME ALABAMA in one! I love it, and you will too!!!
Rating: Summary: A terrific movie. Review: I saw My Big Fat Greek Wedding, at theaters and thought that it was just wonderful. The movie made me laugh so much, and I loved the story that the movie told. I would definately consider seeing this movie again and would recommend to people I know. What a great movie.
Rating: Summary: 5 Stars from this Greek Family! Review: This movie is a beautiful picture of families! While specific to Greek culture, "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" paints a universal picture of family and its idiocyncracies. It is relevant to any bicultural or "ethnic" family living in America today. Friends of mine from different ethnicities said this movie could have easily been reworked to be "My Big Fat Indian Wedding" or "My Big Fat Armenian Wedding" and have joyfully pointed out members of their own family represented by characters from this film. I'm ordering a copy of this DVD for my Yia Yia & Papou as a surprise gift. Our Greek-American family, located in the San Francisco Bay Area, gives this film five stars, five thumbs up and an enthusiastic OPA!!
Rating: Summary: Charming, Funny, My favorite 2002 movie Review: Okay, so I don't know a thing about Greek families. But I do know those families whose ancestry is open to speculation. What I know is that families are often funny, and eccentric, and when real love and loyalty is there, it is charming. That is what I found in the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding. It was like listening to my siblings and I talk about some of our family reunions where the stories get exaggerated just a tad, but then again we couldn't possibly do justice to just how odd some of our relatives really are. The beyond personal questions, the running commentaries on your life, the, sometimes exaggerated, fears relatives have that you will never marry....it's all captured on film in a most delightful way in this movie. When Nia Vardalos shares her feelings of not fitting into the world around her, and not always fitting into the family she was born in, I could relate. I was rooting for her when she tackled her mono-brow, laughed in sympathy when she turned into a total goof around the object of her affections, and envied her her family. I went to the movie to be entertained, and I was in a big way. I was also touched. This one is a keeper, and goes into my film library. Aloha.....enjoy it.
