Summary: Real Greeks DO Like this Film
Review: I have to say how much I loved this film. Not only as an enthusiastic moviegoer but also as a Greek American. It is easy to see how people of all cultures relate to this family-oriented film. Additionally, every Greek that I know, including my father who ws born and raised in Greece, loves this film. There is no greater advertisement for the richness and beauty of the Greek culture. If you are one of the few people who did not see this film, I highly recommend it as a funny feel-good movie.

Summary: Predicable but sweet and funny hit!
Review: Sure you go into it knowing the girl gets the guy, and there is a big wedding at the end, but the ride to get there sure is hilarious. Toula is someone we can all relate to, whether we knew an "ugly duckling" in our lives or we were one ourselves! She is sensitive and shy, yet confident and determined, and her love and respect for family and the values that keep them together is truly endearing. The story has been told before, especially in teen movies with Freddie Prinze Jr., but this one seems to grab you by the heartstrings with some very touching scenes and there were parts that made us laugh so hard we nearly cried! You might not like the stereotypes, but it's all in fun and any nationality can really relate to the way customs are perpetuated in one way or another. You'll even enjoy the music here. Three cheers, it's a hit.

Summary: A BIG FAT HIT? IT'S GREEK TO US!
Review: If Lainie Kazan is to be believed, then My Big Fat Greek Wedding is the biggest romantic comedy of all time. (Lainie makes the claim in those relentless commercials for the DVD release of the flick.) Truth? Or a huge heaping of baklava? Maybe only "Variety" really knows. What we know is that the film certainly offers a variety of yukes ... and a few yawns. Joel Zwick's direction is often hesitant (especially during the film's first 30 minutes, deadly in a film with a running time of only 90 minutes), and performances are often as stiff as a Greek statue. Don't get us wrong: We laughed. But we certainly didn't go crazy for this sleeper whose cult status is, well, Greek to us. Yes, Lainie is good (proving that Italian, Jewish and Greek Mamas re all the same: large and loud and eager to feed), and Andrea Martin is simply divine, sort of a Melina Mercouri take on Rita Moreno. But we found very little chemistry between stars Nia Vardalos and John Corbett and were hoping, frankly, for a relationship that was at least as tasty as a stuffed grape leaf or two.

Summary: Haven't laughed this hard in years!...
Review: It's been a long time since a movie made me laugh to the point of tears, but this one did it!... The "twin" story did me in!

I come from a clannish-type family from Chicago, and part of my family is even of Greek descent. I could totally relate to the way this family interacts!... I think a lot of people (Greek or not) can relate to some of the characters in this film.

I loved Nia Vardalos' character - not your typical on-screen heroine. I also loved the refreshingly clean storyline, as well as the portrayal of the fiancee as unconditionally loving and accepting. I kept waiting for the typical Hollywood "what about me" attitude to throw a monkey wrench into the love story, but thankfully it didn't!

Wow, Hollywood - take notice of the box office $$$ for this movie, and realize that you don't need a big budget or lots of shallow ...violence/whatever in order to be profitable! Just a funny, sweet love story that touches us with reminders of the hokey and wonderful things about our families!

Summary: Entertaining movie, not supposed to be gospel!
Review: It seems everyone who has written a review of this movie has been taking it waaaaay too seriously. I saw it with my girlfriend at the time, and loved it. Very close family friends of ours are Italians, and this portrayed them to a 'T' as well. It's a hilarious movie, and just that. It's not meant to be a real romantic movie, and it's not meant to be a fall-out-of-your-seat comedy either. It's pure entertainment, and anyone who knows a family even similar to this will get a kick out of it. Are all Greek, Italian, Jewish, or otherwise, families like this? No way. People need to not take life, or films, too seriously. This was a very enjoyable movie, and I would recomment it to anyone.

Summary: A MOVIE THAT OPENS YOUR HEART
Review: MANY MOVIES TODAY SHOW YOU EVERYTHING FROM DECEIT TO MURDER TO A COMPLETE SCENE OF A SEXUAL ACT.
THIS MOVIE IS A PURE MAN MEETS WOMAN STORY. THEY FALL IN LOVE WITH EACH OTHER, THEN IN COMES THE BIGGEST PART OF A RELATIONSHIP - MEETING & ACCEPTING THE OTHER PERSON'S FAMILY AS PART OF THE REAL PICTURE.
BOTH MY HUSBAND & I AGREE THAT THIS IS THE BEST MOVIE WE HAVE SEEN IN A LONG TIME.

Summary: Sweet Treat!
Review: I can not say enough about My Big Fat Greek Wedding! Besides making my extremely dysfunctional family look normal [ :) ] it was a sweet, funny, and thoroughly enjoyable experience. My favorite character was the demented, psychotic grandma. I took my mom to see it, and we laughed ourselves sick. I bought the video today.

Summary: My miniature anorexic Mexican divorce
Review: I thought that would be a nice title for the inevitable gag inducing runaway hit . Everything about this film screams cliche and derision . This has already been done , to a certain extent on that Raymond show that everyone is supposed to love . Admittedly , this could be the prequel to that show , especially considering the ending .

Are pesky , bitter , culturally arrogant parents and potential in laws still funny . Personally i think they are annoying and i regard them with derision . The prideful , impatient parents who seek to control their offspring's lives because theirs is so out of control and they feel ttheir life is deteriorating . They cling to a sense of life by seeking to control every aspect of someone else's .

The woman who " rebels " ultimately becomes a spiritual clone of the object of her hatred , in this film her parents .

The emasculated pretty boy is merely being used as pawn to aid in this rebellion succumbs to the external pressure of the seemingly sweet and innocent young woman .

Eventually he loses whatever identity he once had and becomes the nice little " greek orthodox " boy to please not only her but her parents . After all they are the ones pulling the strings . He always was the man they wished she would marry , they just had to traumatize him in order to reveal his true indentity , a spineless wimp with no life of his own .

I would have enjoyed the film a bit more , if he took some sort of stand and held his ground , but he's just too pathetic to find anything remotely entertaining in the proceedings .

I know , this is a comedy , but underneath it's malicious and oppressive . It would have worked if it was supposed to be a dark comedy , but it's being labelled as an innocent tribute to the creator/writer's heritage .

Culture , in any form , the bane of mankind's existence , it perpetuates the failures of the previous generation , and confines the individual to a myopic existence .

I do recommend this film , but for different reasons than the marketing is suggesting .
