Summary: Was this supposed to be funny?
Review: Okay All I've heard was how funny this movie was supposed to be. Well after sitting through it, I'm still waiting for the punch line. If anyone finds it, will they let me know where it is? This movie was almost painful to sit through, and felt more like a documentary then anything else. My buddy and I both sat there scratching our heads. His girl didn't even think it was so great, and this was a quintessential chick-flick! Guys, beware, and steer clear! You were warned!

Summary: A chick flick guys can watch
Review: Okay, I'll admit it. I didn't want to watch this movie, but you know how it is. I found that I enjoyed it at the theater, and I liked it on DVD. I think the most compelling aspect of the DVD edition is the audio commentary where you learn just how close the movie was to Nia Vardalos' real life story.

The gags about deriving every word back to the original Greek root, or the bit about Greek School instead of Brownies are real. The whacky characters were all drawn from real life experiences or relatives.

I think that is one of the real reasons this movie works, because it touches us on a personal and real level.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding may be a chick flick, but it is above and beyond the usual fare.

Besides we can use a few extra points.

Summary: Great Movie with Lasting Humor
Review: I loved this movie when I saw it in theatres, it has a human quality to the humor, although a bit improbable at times, it's very relateable which is what makes it so funny. Some of the other reviewers haven't said particularly good things, but i think once you see it, you'll agree with me and all the other people dishing out "hype" about this movie. If you're still not sure, rent the movie first at your local video place, as with any movie you're not sure aobut. see it first, then decide how you feel before buying it. and now for a reading rainbow flashback momet:"but you don't have to take my word for it"

Summary: Big Fat Disappointment
Review: I had heard so much about this movie and how funny it is, etc., etc. I brought it home the other night and couldn't wait to watch it. BORING! BORING! BORING! I kept waiting for the movie to get going but it didn't. It was really a big disappointment after all the hype.

Summary: One cliche after another, contrived, unbelievable
Review: Within a period of a few weeks (days? hours??), the heroine changes from a dumpy, personality-free frump in mouse brown rags into a pretty, charming, vivacious, personable, driven businesswoman who snags a guy who could be a male model (and the actor IS one in real life - for the Ford agency). Yeah. right. This film demands that you suspend all disbelief. Even if you do, it still isn't funny. The Greek family members appear to have gotten their accents from the Greek equivalent of a minstrel show. Everyone is dopey and ignorant. The father is a chauvinist who must have escaped from a dusty wing of the Smithsonian Institution. Men like this ("Women should not be educated") still exist? Women who marry men like that still exist?? The non-Greek fiance has parents who are the usual offensive Hollywood stereotypes of Caucasian protestants. Does anyone really think that WASPS would be shocked speechless to see a Greek family having a barbecue on their lawn? What was that scene all about???!!! Where do people usually have barbecues? In their bedrooms???? The scriptwriters must think so as the WASP parents couldn't have been more bug-eyed if they had been electrocuted with a cattle prod. I suppose the writers thinks WASPS live on wine and brie? And how would it be possible that a large Greek family of cooks (the family runs a restaurant) wouldn't know what a bundt cake is?!!?? I found this to be an offensive and insulting movie. It seems to playing to the lowest common denominator...

Summary: delightful slice of life
Review: If you like people, their foibles & fun...if you appreciate a well written script... or just enjoy playing with language you'll probably enjoy MBFGW! Talented actors add to the entertainment. In part like a good foreign film or even art movie, this screenplay offers a slice of life, sometimes subtle, sometimes over the top, often humorous, poignant. It is about "coming alive," in different ways, what people do for love, celebrating old traditions, embracing change. Afterwards, we felt uplifted.

Summary: Hilarious and heartwarming!
Review: Soo hilarious and heartwarming! It's a romance, but not the hackneyed storylines often used in so many romance movies; this time it's the girl who's from the "exotic" background whereas the guy is from an Anglo background. It's so interesting seeing the two cultures meld together...Toula's big, loud, boisterous, huggy family parades their Greek heritage proudly to anyone within earshot and esp. the droll dad advertises being Greek to the world while Ian's tiny, quiet, reserved, proper, rather staid family keep to themselves and viewers really don't know what ethnic background they are other than northern European (I suspect the Millers are Irish). Both families have a bit of culture shock upon meeting, but it's refreshing to see how they warm up to each other and learn about how actually similar they are despite being raised differently and having different rituals. The great ending was at the wedding when Ian's dad jokes *It's all Greek to me* about a phrase he doesn't understand. Definately worth writing home about!

Summary: Overhyped; boring and predictable
Review: I wanted to like this because of the story behind the movie (Independent movie makes good...). Instead, I watched with growing disbelief that this movie never really got going. Mildly amusing, some good performances, but overall it was a real sleeper. Many other romantic comedies out there are a lot more interesting.
