Rating: Summary: Good Romance-Comedy Review: Although this is not my favorite genre, this was a good movie. I was tempted to give it four stars, but there were no real drawbacks that would justify that, so it gets five stars. The actors do a good job. John Corbett would appear to be John Travolta's brother -- similar looks, voice and mannerisms. The pair come off as made for each other and the timing of the playout of the romance is good. The family representation is typical of large family marriages with a small family (like in our case and several other couples that we know). In that sense, much of the comedy may be easy to laugh at. However, for people not in that situation, they may ask themselves where the humor is. Still, there is enough to justify it for a good date with some romance in the air. Obviously a good choice for special occasions like Valentine's Day.
Rating: Summary: Overhyped Review: Great acting (Lainie Kazan and Michael Constantine are especially terrificin an over-the-top way) but a somewhat simple story-boy (whose only distinguishing trait is being a vegetarian) meets girl (whose overbearing, overdramatic family worships its ethnic heritage above all things--substitute any ethnic/religious/family name for Greek) and they get married. The overbearing, neurotic father finally accepts the infidel into the family and buys them a house for a wedding present...of course, right next door to his own. Not the comedy I was expecting. I laughed, I think, four times.
Rating: Summary: Intelligent funny film... Review: Really well scripted film. Intelligent and funny. Good to see an "average" looking girl rather than a supermodel get the good looking guy for a change. The jokes are a bit stereotypical but funny nonetheless. Would recommend Bend It Like Beckham if you liked this film.
Rating: Summary: My Big Fat Greek Wedding, a big fat success! Review: From beginning to the end of the movie Nia Vardalos' character brings a certain innocence and down to earth type of attitude that many female characters are lacking in Hollywood films nowadays. Her character is so intelligent and sweet it is hard not to fall in love with her. John Corbet is equally brilliant as Nia's boyfriend Ian, he is so funny and endearing you will fall in love with him as well. Seeing all these crazy and eccentric cousins, grandmothers, uncles, aunts, grandfathers, reminds me of my family, I may not be Greek but I am Italian and us Greeks and Italians have three things in common: we're both loud, we both have strong religious beliefs and we both love food. This movie depicting Ian trying desperately not only to fit in, but to get Taula's family to accept him will make you laugh and cry the whole way through. There are so many hilarious scenes I can't list them all there is too many. Watch it for yourself, you won't be sorry.
Rating: Summary: Must see! Review: It is no fluke this movie is so popular. A wonderful story with good hearted humor. No stupid race or sex jokes just for the laugh, but family humor about a funny family. A great cast who did their jobs in an award winning fashion - they made their characters very real and believable. The hour and a half went by in a flash. You will love it!
Rating: Summary: I married into this family!! Review: I did not know anything about greek families until I met my husband. I absolutely loved this movie!! "Welcome to my world." His family did not like me much because I am not greek. So I related to this movie to a tee. If you know anyone that is greek or you are about to marry a greek, RENT THE MOVIE! You'll love it!!
Rating: Summary: Hollywood needs MORE movies such as this. Review: Clean, honest, funny, romantic, and at times very sad....this is a movie that I will cherish forever. It brings back "feel good" feelings about family issues. There needs to be MORE movies like this.
Rating: Summary: Big Fat Greek Fun! Review: I had no desire to see this film. I didn't bother to see it when it made its remarkable run in theaters, and I ignored all the hoopla. Then my wife brought this little jewel home from the video store the other night, and I reluctantly pulled up a chair and watched the movie. Darn glad I did. MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING is cultural stereotyping run amuck, but pulls it off because the film never takes itself too seriously. Michael Constantine as family patriarch Gus Portokalos (the "Windex Man") is delightfully over the top. Name a word--any word--and he'll prove it's derived from the Greek language. The sprawling Portokalos clan takes center stage here; imagine your most boisterous family union, multiply it by ten, and you'll match the energy of this family's get-togethers. The film centers around the romance and subsequent engagement of Toula Portokalos (Nia Vardalos), deemed an "old maid" by her family, and yuppie Ian Miller (John Corbett), who is kind and likeable, but--gasp!--not Greek. Toula does her best to insulate her fiance from the rowdiness of her huge family, but for Ian it's baptism by fire from the start. The "cultural indoctrination" is intense. It's also downright funny. What pleased me even more was the love story here. The relationship between Toula and Ian transcended the cultural differences; at no time did either of them think about calling off the wedding. I was afraid the plot would move to that contrived, overdone dimension, but was pleasantly wrong. Anyone who comes from a big family, or wishes they had, will adore MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING. An enthusiastic five stars!
Rating: Summary: Romantic comedy is as sweet and charming as they come Review: It isn't easy to comment on "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" as a movie without mentioning its boxoffice performance. The independent production cost five million dollars, about ten per cent of the price tag for an average Hollywood studio movie. With a very small promotional budget, it opened on a few screens on April 19, 2002 and should have vanished a couple of months later. Instead, it built and built, taking in nearly a quarter of a billion dollars domestically. The fifth highest grossing movie of 2002, it outdid such high profile titles as "Signs", "Goldmember", and "Men in Black II". This very simple romance is about Toula [Nia Vardalos], an ordinary-looking, second generation Greek woman of thirty who meets and falls in love with Ian [John Corbett], a very tall and very WASP school teacher. This does not sit well with her family, especially her father, who always assumed she'd marry a nice Greek boy. The movie tells the sweet, often hilarious story of how two people from different worlds go from first meeting to the altar. The cast includes some great character actors, including Michael Constantine, Lanie Kazan and Andrea Martin. Ms. Vardalos wrote the witty, semi-autobiographical script. It's hard to pinpoint what made "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" the most successful independent movie ever. It's far from the best movie of 2002; indeed, it's rather slight. One factor may be that it's about unconditional love. From the moment they meet, Toula and Ian are destined to be together. They work through every obstacle without ever resorting to the stupid arguments that abound in most other romantic comedy. They never try to change one another. And they are so filled with the joy and wonder of having found each other, the audience can not help but be filled with joy and wonder, too.
