Rating: Summary: Stinks to high heaven Review: This is shameful and a real waste of my time. Not to say anything of the several youngsters I babysit regularly. Let me tell you, they'll watch just about anything and keep quiet, so when they fidgeted for the entire 90 minutes of this movie... well, I knew something was wrong. This movie almost literally filled the room with an offensive odor. The acting is uniformly stilted, especially from Nia Vardolos. Yes, I can say that John Corbett is quite a studmuffin but so is Fabio. You don't see him pretending to act in hit movies. The clash of cultures (Greek and W.A.S.P.) has been explored far better in numerous other films. I really felt sorry for some of the better actors (such as Vardolos's character's mother and father), because I think they would have been better served if the script was more insightful. This movie is too cute.
Rating: Summary: Imagine That Review: Imagine that. A movie that doesn't use shock tactics, grossness, bodily function references and the seven bad words you used to not be able to say on television to be funny. Instead it just gently pokes fun at itself while celebrating itself. This is multiculturalism without the arrogance. This is humor without being hip. This is just a lot of fun.
Rating: Summary: Fabulous!!!!! Review: As an avid movie-goer and pathetic sap when it comes to romantic comedies I must give this movie applause. It was hilarious! The characters were not the boring remade hollywood handful that we see in every single movie that comes out, but a completely refreshing group of regular people. The Greek wedding aspect of it was an amazing thing to see (and quite accurate as I've been told). I didn't even have a Greek wedding and could relate to it on some levels via my own wedding experiences with my large family! So funny! Flat out a great fun movie experience! I don't know about the 'guy' reaction, but if you love to laugh, it's a must have!
Rating: Summary: Such an adorable movie Review: My Big Fat Greek Wedding is an absolutely adorable movie that centers around 30-something Toula and her Greek heritage. Though this is a Greek family, I think that any person can identify at least one person in their family to match up with each member of Toula's family. This movie is very funny and believable. It shows that you can do anything if you believe in yourself and love, and I think that that is very important. It is also incredibly touching, and there are some moments that are just so sweet that I almost cried. Definitely a must see!
Rating: Summary: Surprisingly funny, down to earth real story & fine acting! Review: It's almost a case of rooting for the underdog as star AND writer Nia Vardalos makes a killing with this hit movie made for pennies against revenue. Nia herself defies the chick-flick stereotype: she's not blonde, not particularly beautiful, very ethnic, and the offspring of an ultra-ethnic Greek family, with flags and statues galore out on the front lawn lest anyone not know! The supporting characters are near flawless, including Lainie Kazan as mom, Michael Constantine as dad, and Andrea Martin as the scene-stealing Aunt Voula. Even non-Greek boyfriend John Corbett, whose part gets a little sappy from time to time, mostly holds up his end of the bargain in at best difficult circumstances plot-wise -- the family at first looks at him much like they would a cockroach! It all works out in the end, but there's non-stop entertainment and laughs all the way. Perhaps some of the most humorous scenes contrast the Greek hoarde with the fiance's rather staid parents. Aunt Voula is a riot with such thoughts as "he's a vegetarian? no problem, instead of beef, we'll serve lamb!" We get to see our unlikely heroine make it all work by film's end, and when we leave the theater or slide out the DVD feeling good, that's all we ask. The story and the stars were great!
Rating: Summary: A joyous celebration of kinship and love Review: What exactly did producers Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson see in this romantic comedy written and co-starring Nia Viadalos? The answer can also be simultaneously found in this sleeper hit which grossed more than 200 million in the U.S box office with a growing audience. This low-budget vehicle could have been a slapstick perfunctory sitcom outing if not for the spontaneity and sincerity when Ms. Vardalos regards her rambunctious Greek family. Exuding down-to-earth appeals as Tulas, she narrates her troubles with the family when she falls in love with a vegetarian WASP Ian Miller (John Corbett). The ensemble of the supporting casts fill the shoes of her extensive relatives which includes 27 cousins as well as a complaining aunt. They give shades of warmth and compassion to break free of their stereotypical mold - and Ms. Vardalos knows them so well that this becomes a joyous celebration of kinship as well as love.
Rating: Summary: Funniest Movie of 2002 Review: Having seen this movie in the theaters about six months ago, I have been waiting impatiently to own this on DVD. I am going to divide this review in two parts, the first one being reviewing the movie itself and the last part reviewing the actual DVD. As far as the movie is concerned, it is a great movie and one that I am happy with in my DVD/VHS collection. I dragged my mother to see this movie. She wasn't thrilled before the movie started but I think she quickly changed her mind once it started. Everyone can relate to this story, because we all have relatives. Nia Vardalos has written an refreshing comical screenplay that not only describes her family but just about everybody elses. It isn't the best movie that has come out of Hollywood, but who cares? I enjoyed laughing.... Compared to other films I have seen last year I was glad to spend the money on it and not only once but twice. In a nut shell this movie is about a young women trying to deal with her Greek family expectations and dealing with the fact that she is in love and wants to marry a non-Greek man. And you don't have to be Greek to enjoy this movie. As far as the other reviews saying that the Greek community doesn't like this movie because of all of the stereotypes, I'm not Greek but do you think that it would have made as much money if the movie was "My Big Fat WASP Wedding"? Vardalos wrote about what is familiar to her that is why it works. The stereotypes in this movie are more dramatization than anything else...you have to make the characters quirky and funny. When I saw this movie for the first time I was associating people in my own family and situations I have gone through. Now for the DVD review: I was disappointed in my DVD purchase. The only advantage is that you get the widescreen edition and the full screen edition on the same DVD and don't have to chose between which one you want to purchase. Of course most people don't have that problem, but if you are in a household with several people and some like the widescreen and the rest prefer the full. It is a great feature. That is the only great feature, the only other features avaible on the DVD are subtles in French, Spanish, English, and Greek. The last feature is a biography section of the major actors in the film. Now I know that this was an independent project, but have something a cut scene or something. Some DVDs are worth buying for the DVD features, this is not one of them. This is the reasoning behind my 4 star voting and I voted this way as the DVD. The movie is funny and I am happy that I can watch it when I have the free time. Just a little disappointed in what is offered on the DVD.
Rating: Summary: Sweet movie, but ... Review: After watching this movie with my family and friends, we've come up with our own verdict that there is no trace of amusement. Even I personally thought about this movie to be funny and culturally interesting, I found it's hard to believe this movie was a big hit when it first came out. Use your own judgement, not some critiques on TV or magazines. Use the Windex !
Rating: Summary: A Big Fat Fun Movie Review: This is a movie that you can just sit back and enjoy. There are so many movies now that want to make someone feel worthless, afraid, jealous, or angry. This one just wants you to feel good. I knew a Greek family much like the one in the movie and the patriach of the family was a carbon copy of Gus in the movie, even down to explaining how all words have Greek roots. The story is all about family and boy do the Greeks have families! Loving, caring, meddling, protective families! In this story, Toula, the daughter of the family is 30 and unmarried, a situation that distresses her dear father. Toula works at the family restaurant, Dancing Zorbas, and while doing so, with no help from her father is somewhat smitten by a WASPy hunk who happens in for coffee with a friend. Ian Miller is not Greek. He is the farthest thing you can think of from Greek and over time as the two fall inexorably in love you can imagine the strains the relationship will put on both families, especially hers. You know they will marry and that all will work out in the end. This story is not about disappointment. So you can sit back and enjoy the twists and turns that occur as we move towards the wedding day. The story was written from the heart and all one needs do is open theirs to enjoy it.
Rating: Summary: Guilt trip masterpiece Review: Those of us of ethnic background (around the "MED") felt like we were watching our own families on the the screen, except for the "windex". The Greek, Middle Eastern and Italian females are just about like the ones in the movie, strong willed, hair growing holding a master degree in the "Guilt Trip". Its like the fellow on the radio says "Where the Women are Strong, the Men are Good Looking, and the Children are above Average". The movie is well worth having, its very funny, no special effects and fairly clean.
