Rating: Summary: A Must-Own for a DVD Home Library Review: This DVD features the most successful independent film in history. Produced for only $5 million dollars, and grossing $240 million so far it is a phenomenon. But this phenomenon is a superbly crafted and entertaining romantic comedy. As a male, this is not a genre I invest money in buying tapes or DVD's. Word of mouth convinced me otherwise; after seeing the DVD I believe this is a home video library must-own. Nia Vardalos who wrote the script (a true story about her romance and marriage to a non-Greek) and stars in the movie does a perfect acting job, the dialog is so real, and the maudlin scenes edited so crisply that I was easily won over. I laughed out loud a lot. And what an ensemble of supporting actors! John Corbett, the philosopher-DJ from "Northern Exposure" TV fame plays his male lead role convincingly, while the parents are played by no less than Michael Constantine("Room 222", "Law and Order"), and Lainie Kazan(currently Aunt Honey on "Will and Grace" but an accomplished actress and a popular vocalist in her own right, especially in the 1960's). Andrea Martin ("Second City" and "SCTV" alumna) a terrific comedienne, plays the busybody aunt. The DVD is put together with cast bios, extra music features and special audio commentary with Nia, Corbett and director Joel Zwick. This movie has now become a CBS television sitcom called "My Big Fat Greek Life" featuring the entire movie cast, except for Corbett (who has another commitment). Reviews of the TV show say it is a winner. Watch the DVD to give you background for the TV show, or just to laugh out loud and enjoy a heart-warming atypical (non-Hollywood) cinema experience.
Rating: Summary: Crosses Cultural Boundaries Review: This film may be about a Greek family, but it completely represents how my German/Irish/Polish relatives interact with one another. I laughed the entire time! It's good, clean family entertainment!
Rating: Summary: Enjoyed It!! Review: Although I am not Greek, this movie did appeal to me. I enjoyed the fact that the man had to go to the father and ask for his daughter, although when the suitor did it in the movie, he still took her out in spite of his misgivings. Also, the fact that it stayed romantic without getting heavy on the intimate aspects was fine by me. Another part that cracked me up was when the groom's parents went to the bride's parents house and got plastered on those drinks so much they had to pass up on the meat. Truly enjoyable.
Rating: Summary: I think my family may be Greek. Review: The food, the countless cousins, uncles, aunts, etc... I guess the Greeks are the original rednecks. Being from the South, I truly connected with the people in this movie. Eat, eat, eat, talk, talk, talk....every get together is like a family reunion. Nia plays a regular girl who gets the guy in the end. She is beautiful but not in the "classic" Hollywood stereotype. She isn't superthin or airbrushed looking just smart, sweet, funny and REAL(Hallelujah!!!!). I love her family. They are soooo funny. I wouldn't mind being invited to their house for lamb or lamb or.....lamb. Cooking a lamb in the front yard is a good thing. Down here where I'm from it's usually a pig in the ground with the beer on ice. Watch this movie and have a oompappa time.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic Greeks Review: I loved this movie. I first saw it in the theatres and was rolling in the aisles laughing! It was too hilarious. I bought the movie for myself on Valentines and have watched it like five times already. It goes down in my "classics" category!
Rating: Summary: Cute but overrated Review: Fairly good movie, but after all the talk, it was a big let down. It's nothing more than a better than average romantic comedy - and that's only because of all the the really bad movies out there.
Rating: Summary: Sets comedy back 30 years Review: If I wanted to be dragged through something so smarmy and predictable, I would have just found a re-run of "My three son's" on TV. This movie reminded me of the laugh-track sit-coms of the 60's which, at the time, were great time-killers between the end of school and dinner(F-troop, where are you?) but at the time, all I ventured was time. I guess it shouldn't, but it does amaze me that it did so well. If you like Gilligan's island, or I dream of Jeannie, go for it. But if your tastes have moved on, don't waste your time or your money on this.
Rating: Summary: Simple and fun Review: This film is simple and fun for the movie goer. Not a film that leaves a lasting impression. Not a film that forces one to look within themselves. Not a film that introduces us to a political faction or thought. This is simplisitcally a good film that is worth your time and money. Nia Vardalos is a great performer here and the supporting cast is funny as heck. Anyone who grew up in America will find something in common within this film. Either Greek or from Ohio, you'll love this film.
Rating: Summary: GREAT FILM.... Review: This is just like a modern "Sabrina" movie. It's very cute and funny! It tells you how 2 people from different background can still fall in love and be happy. It's really a great family-romantic-comedy film! A must have for DVD collectors!
Rating: Summary: Not What I Expected Review: I should know by now that any movie that has a lot of hype surrounding it usually isn't all that it's cracked up to be. For an 'indie' movie, it was pretty good. I'm not saying that I didn't like this movie, I was just a little disappointed... I thought it would be funnier. Now that I've said that, I really do think that this is a movie to see. Coming from a really small family, it was hilarious to see Toula's huge family consisting of 26 'first' cousins. It is a romantic movie and shows that love does conquer all.
