Rating: Summary: Not worth all the hype Review: I waited to watch this movie until it was available in stores. The first few times I tried to rent it, every copy was out. When I finally did get home and watch it, I have to say, I was less than impressed with the movie. It's an average romantic-comedy. It has funny moments. It has stupid moments. And some very predictable moments. All in all, I think you have to be Greek in order to find this movie as hysterical as most people said it was.
Rating: Summary: ohpah!!!!! Review: What can I say, it was a fun movie! I saw this movie with my parents and uncle. We all loved it! My parents and I could appreciate and even identify a little with the Greek family. We thought it would be great to be a part of such a large, loving family. Yes, even a loud boisterous one that is always eating! My uncle on the other hand, definitley prefers the characters of Mr.and Mrs. Miller. one thing we all agreed was that this movie is worth seeing. Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: Well Written Comedy About Life in a Big Greek Family Review: When "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" was released early in 2002, not many people had the opportunity to see it because it was only released in a handful of theaters. However, word of the film spread quickly and within a short period, the film opened in theaters throughout the world. Consequently, a film that only cost $5 Million to make grossed $359 Million in theaters worldwide. Why? Because "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" is a very funny, engaging and entertaining film about a woman struggling to find her own identity against the pressure she receives from the members of her very large, extended Greek family. The woman, Fotoula 'Toula' Portokalos (Nia Vardalos, who also wrote the film), is 30 when the film begins. She has worked at her father's restaurant, "Dancing Zorba's", for many years and has no college education, has low self-esteem and maintains an unattractive appearance. Her father, Gus Portokalos (Michael Constantine), and her mother, Maria Portokalos (Lainie Kazan), have very traditional values that view a woman's role in life is to get married to a Greek man and have Greek children. While working at the restaurant one day, Toula sees a very handsome man (John Corbett, known for his role in the 1990 TV series "Northern Exposure") come into the restaurant with a friend. Toula nervously pours their drinks and takes their food order, but later wants to hide. The experience encourages Toula to make some much-needed changes in her life, including her appearance for which she enlists the aid of her cousin Nikki (Gia Carides). Wanting more in life than marriage and bearing children, Toula manages to convince her parents to let her take classes at a nearby college. In addition, her Aunt Voula (Andrea Martin) finds a cunning way to let Toula leave the restaurant to work next door at her travel agency. While working happily at the travel agency, that same very handsome man walks into the travel agency and introduces himself as Ian Miller (John Corbett). A romance develops between them, but how will Toula's very traditional family react to Toula dating a man who isn't Greek? Nia Vardalos received many accolades for "My Big Fat Greek Wedding", including an Oscar nomination for Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen. I hope to see many more wonderful films from her. Other memorable performances from the very large cast include Christina Eleusiniotis who played Toula at age 6, Marita Zouravlioff who played Toula at age 12, Bess Meisler as Gramdma Yiayia, Louis Mandylor as Nicolas 'Nick' Portokalos, Fiona Reid as Harriet 'Harry' Miller and Bruce Gray as Rodney Miller. Some people may find Nia Vardalos' description of a Greek family to be overly stereotypical, but the purpose of the film was clearly to entertain, not offend. Overall, I rate "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" with a strong 5 out of 5 stars. Also, I had no idea that there were so many uses for window cleaner.
Rating: Summary: Big Fat Greek Review: This is a very interesting piece of work. To me this film was like meeting a new family. You watch this the first time and you think, man, these guys are wierd. Don't get me wrong Im not bashing the greeks. My wife is part greek. Im just saying if you can stand to watch it a few times you get more used to it and it grows on you a little bit. This is story about a girl who is fed greek from the time she left the womb. She gets really sick of it and it shows. She finally decides to start living the life that she wants and falls in love with a man who is not greek. This is a big no no in her family. So they go through the routine and he gets bapised and they get married in the church. This film was acclaimed and I expected it to be more comical than it was, but it is a film that was well done and to some it may be a blockbuster.
Rating: Summary: A laugh a minute Review: This is without doubt the funniest film that I have seen in years the cast are superb. I can only say one word that discribed this film. "Umpah" From Shaun in England
Rating: Summary: Not that funny! Review: This movie was boring! this movie dragged! and to much hype for nothing! also made to much money..... FO WHAT! **
Rating: Summary: A movie that succeeds because of simple charm and emotion Review: Everyone has already commented on how witty and funny this movie is, so I'll merely agree with that and move on. What this movie has that nearly every other multi-million dollar big-budget romantic comedy starring Julia Roberts and Reese Witherspoon and the other 20 million dollar a movie actresses lack that makes this movie such a success is charm. Watching this movie, you see a bit of yourself in the characters, something that lets you identify with them, and thus you're hooked. Toula (Nia Vardalos) is one of the most likeable characters I have ever seen in a movie, and watching what she went through and eventually gained did something that few movies ever do - actually made me feel good about people in general. You don't need special effects or a big budget to make a good movie, as this film shows. Give an audience characters they can like and root for, witty (but never condensending) humor, and a way for them to relate to what is going on (and I felt like I could relate to Toula and what she went through VERY well), and you have a hit. YOU NEED TO BUY THIS MOVIE!
Rating: Summary: Big Fat Hector Fajardo Review: ...I saw the film and found it to be charming and funny for anyone who has ever gotten married......
Rating: Summary: excellent Review: I took a chance on this movie when there were only 10 other people in the theater, and I wasn't surprised when it finally made it to "blockbuster" status. I loved the fact that the people in it looked real, not all done up like usual. I've seen other reviews on this page that suggest the leading lady, the voluptuous Nia Vardalos, is ugly. Here's a thought-- if you think she's ugly, then I'll be looking for YOU on the big screen soon!
Rating: Summary: A great comedy Review: I was reluctant at first to go see this movie in theaters as at the time there wasn't much hype about it. But I was surprised as the movie was great. The plot wasn't cheesy, the jokes were just right. Everyone has an embarassing family yet they still love them. This story has just the right amount of family in it along with a barrell of laughs. It did not disappoint
