Rating: Summary: beatiful art of modern life Review: the awful truth about we the people but a wonderfully presente
Rating: Summary: See it, and judge for yourself. Review: You cannot read a review of this movie and even begin to understand, you have to experience it. You owe it to yourself to see what all the fuss is about. Enjoy.
Rating: Summary: I love this movie! Review: When I went to the video store to rent this movie, I asked the clerk if it was good. She replied, "It's the most disgusting movie I've ever seen. It's about PEDOPHELIA!!!" I almost didn't rent it, and what a shame that would have been. I loved this movie! There are so many layers, and the actors do a wonderful job with complicated, gross, funny, painful material. No, this movie is not for everyone, but it is the best movie I've seen in a long time.
Rating: Summary: A disturbing display of pain and suffering Review: This film was one of the few movies I missed in theaters. When I caught its video release, though, I absolutely loved it. I think Todd Solondz has made a disturbing masterpiece of a follow-up to "Welcome to the Dollhouse". Though his other movie had pain, I truly think that "Happiness" dug a little deeper.
Rating: Summary: Are you ready for a shock? Review: I saw this film in the theatre THREE times because of certain scenes I thought I would never see in a movie. I loved Todd Slondz's first film, "Welcome To The Dollhouse," so I went. It is totally different but still contains so many emotional elements all at the same time - you want to cry, laugh, get sick, be sad, etc. all at the same time! Phiilip Seymour Hoffman should have won an Academy Award for his portrayal of "Alan" the obscene phone caller. Do NOT see this if you are a prude. Do NOT see this with a date unless you know that person very well. Be prepared to go through all of the emotions. Very thought provoking.
Rating: Summary: Amazing performances, incredible script Review: This movie blew me away. The acting is incredibly good, and the script, twisted and funny, walks the line between fantastical and disturbingly real. One of my favorite movies.
Rating: Summary: Pure Art Review: No long winded review here. This movie is pure art and nothing more. Its use of metaphoric, but still accomplishingly literal material really surprised me. Its a cerebral work taht obviously apeals to most audiences. Simply stated, Happiness showed us what cinamatic art can and should be resembling. I am happy to have seen it.
Rating: Summary: totally unique Review: I couldn't agree more with the concensus of the other reviewers below: This Movie is definitely NOT FOR EVERYONE. Nevertheless if you are a fan of interesting and thought-provoking story-telling, this is your film. Happiness is an excellent voyeuristic look beneath the surface of suburban America. Admittedly, the stories that the film weaves together are atypical and exagerrated, but they offer a glimpse into what incredible and often disgusting private lives people have in this country. Happiness offers a perfect counterpoint to those all-too-common Hollywood films that only offer two-dimensional heroes. Be warned there are no real heroes here, but isn't that a little bit more like real life. The subject matter will disturb, entertain and captivate those viewers who have an open-mind.
Rating: Summary: "how do you summarise this film to the casual viewer?" Review: Most people, including my parent's, first questions will be, "what is this movie about, and who is in it?"...Two irrelevant issues. Simply put , it is the story of three sisters and the "comings and going of the people that pass in and out of their lives" ( sounds very after-school-special-ish) Except for for the fact that this story involves pedophilia, dismemberment, suicide, masturbation, rape, not to mention dogs eating semen. absolutely amazing film, with all around great performances, however I am no hurry to see it again in the near future, (similar to the effect of "Schindler's List" and "Saving Private Ryan"
Rating: Summary: Todd Solondz Is All Hype Review: First off, all this movie is trying to do is disturb you. All the reviews I read talked about how funny it was. I'm sorry but child molestation is never very funny to me. Sorry, just can't seem to bust out laughing about it. Beyond that, it's just a very boring script. Todd Solondz first film, Welcome to The Dollhouse, wasn't very good either, but I was told that this was far better. Never thought I would say it, but I would watch Dollhouse anyday over this. Boring, man. Just boring. WARNING: IF YOU FEEL LIKE KILLING YOURSELF FROM DEPRESSION AFTER THIS MOVIE, YOUR NOT ALONE. EVERYONE DOES.
