Summary: The best comedy of 1999
Review: This comedy beats out other great comedies of 1999 like Man On The Moon, and South Park: The Movie. The writer is great, and the direction is cool. The story is one of the best in years. Jason Mewes deserves an award for his role in this movie (although that is not uncommon for he was great in Mallrats too!). Ths film is just great, and in no way does it mean to insult the Catholic church, i belive that even very religious people can enjoy this film on its accurate depections of the stories, and its new age twists. Summary: Dogma Fulfills Smith's Promise
Review: Kevin Smith spins an amazing story about two angels trying to return to heaven. Along the way, Salma Hayek does a great turn as a "dancing schoolgirl" in an absolutely eye-popping scene. Lots of appearances from some of the View Askew Regulars, even Fan Boy and Steve-Dave. An finally, Alanis Morissette in an absolutely RADIANT performance. What may seem blasphemous at the beginning becomes clearly divine at the end. This movie is better than Chasing Amy, is that possible? The dialogue is snappy, Jay and Silent Bob are given larger roles. Unfortunately, the DVD is not a collector's edition. Would trade my Silent Bob doll for a batch of outtakes. DEFINITE BUY !

Summary: Karma ran over my Dogma
Review: This film has gained a lot of criticism from the Christian sect because it is said to make fun of religions and add events that Christians believe never happened. My response to this is simple. IT IS ONLY A MOVIE! Do you remember any astronauts going nuts because they launched two space shuttles at the same time in Armageddon? Get over it. Okay, I've said my piece. If you haven't seen this film yet, let me tell you that is a very clever and almost satirical approach to religion. Are we supposed to believe that Jay and Silent Bob are prophets? Are we to believe that Chris Rock plays a black apostle who was oppressed by the white man and written out of the bible? Are we supposed to believe that God is a woman? Of course not! It is a work of fiction, but Kevin Smith sure does make it believable. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are angels who have been cast from heaven by God. They, however, find a loophole that will allow them to be readmitted to heaven. It is up to Linda Fiorentino's character, Chris Rock, Jay, and Silent Bob to save the day (and the world). I can't say enough nice things about this film. Even the opening of the film had me in hysterics. Go see it when you get a chance!

Summary: EVOLUTION IS EVEN AFFECTING CHRISTIANITY!
Review: If Dogma is an example of what Christianity might be EVOLVING into...I definitely approve! I applaud Kevin Smith's effort in this film. I can see that he's an advocate of tolerance and of many other things that are considered anti-Christian. Homosexuality, racism, sex, profanity are woven into the story from the correct angle. Kevin's faith and relationship with his God are not contingent with whether he smokes or curses. He thinks that God has better things to do than worry about how to punish you for sleeping with someone of your same sex or for masturbating. I applaud Kevin for his satirical approach to the Christian traditions. I especially enjoyed his raising the question that Jesus was Black. He's had the guts to say (quite loudly) what is wrong with organized religion, and quite frankly...IT'S ABOUT TIME! I must continue by saying that my Atheism is a source of pride not shame. Mysticism advocates that people relinquish their ability to think and embrace irrationality. I do not condone nor foster in any way any negation of the MIND or the SELF. It is on those grounds that I cannot accept any part of what mysticism (i.e. Christianity, Buddhism, New Age, Witchfraft, etc.) has to offer. However, this is a free country and I will defend anyone's right to follow their chosen faith as well as their right to follow NONE. I expect the same courtesy. DOGMA is already part of my collection. I love Kevin's work for being intelligent and pungent. After watching it I bought all his other movies: Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Clerks. They're all absolutely funny. I read the reviews: people complaining about the nudity, and the profanity...saying the movie is blasphemous, too preachy, too serious, not serious enough.... blah, blah, blah. Don't buy DOGMA or ANY movie based on the reviews you read, YOU HAVE A BRAIN! Rent it first, if you like it buy it - that's all there's to it. I would like, however, to point out to those who were insulted by the movie to be more discreet about their self-righteousness and indignation. After all, there are those (of us) who don't forget about Christianity's skeletons in the closet. We as a race of THINKING INDIVIDUALS have worked long and hard to come out of those DARK AGES that spawned The Catholic Inquisition, and I for one, wouldn't want to live in a world that is seeking eagerly to go back to that travesty. Back 1995, I read an article in which The Vatican admitted it was "wrong" to have exiled Galileo Galilei and to have burned alive his assistant for stating that the Sun is the center of the solar system and not Earth - as was the belief. If you want to be outraged about something be outraged about that...THAT is obcene!

Summary: Maybe Worth A Rental
Review: After all the controversey this film has stirred up, I felt for sure I was going to be offended going into the theatre. The verdict? I was offended, but not by the religious context of the film. There are those who consider director Kevin Smith to be one of the greatest writer/directors working today. I must admit, I have not seen any of his other work, but after seeing this I have respect for his writing ability, but not his directing. Dogma is the story of two fallen angels trying to get back to Heaven and those people sent to stop them. It tries, at least I think it is trying, to be a biting satire about modern religion and the pointlessness of denominations in the Christian faith. There are even some good moments where it succeeds at this (such as saying Jesus is black, he was indeed probably far more dark skinned than we see in pictures today). But it fails far too often. Dogma ends up being a long collection of scenes which Smith tries very dilligently to tie together, but instead seem to fall apart. When it abandons the dumb potty comedy, and starts trying to talk religion the film becomes too heavy handed and ends up sounding like preaching. In the end Dogma is maybe worth a rental. It has some funny scenes and lines. But I just can't find it in me to reccomend this failed attempt.

Summary: OVERRATED TO HIGH HEAVEN
Review: DOGMA caused much controvery prior to its belated release by Disney. It shouldn't be protested for its content-it basically should be protested for being a bad film! As they told Mozart about having too many notes, this film hastoo many words! I don't mean that in an illiterate sense, I mean it drags on longer than a crucifixion! Kevin Smith must've took the good reviews of CHASING AMY (A really GOOD film) and put his word processor on overdrive typing the script! It makes a few interesting theological points but a "poo" monster? That totally took the film to nonsensical levels! It was like Troma Films doing religious satire! You won't need to o to confession after watching this, but you may have to forgive yourself.

Review: To the person on here who commented and said they were banished to Michigan... they weren't. They were banished to Wisconsin. Wisconsin really is hell. Michigan, while not the flashiest or most exciting of states, is most certianly a livable place. Wisconsin is not, as echoed in this movie.

Summary: Great but not to be taken seriously!
Review: To me the fact that this was sapose to be taken as a joke is a given to me but some people took offence. I appasalutly loved it! although the Golagothem was a bit much. The idea of the Meterach is hullarous! Selma Hiack is fantastic as the muse. And chris Rock we actually got to see a srious side (more or less) The way Ben Afflek and Matt Damon play Bartlby and Loki is hullaous and touching the way the carecters talked about "Going home." I loved Linda Flantino as Bethany. Silet Bob and Jay as the two bunbling prophets is reason enough to watch it Even though she has no lines Alanis moratese's acting is great. Everyone who as ever doughted that God has a sence of humor has got to watch this movie
