Review: I used to watch this movie as a kid and laughed my head off. I was thrilled when I saw it's release on DVD. I found myself laughing just like I did when I was younger. Many might compare this to the Abbot & Costello adventures in Scary/Funny movies.

Summary: Good Ol' Comedy
Review: Don Knotts and Tim Conway's 'Pirate Eyes' movie put on a show full of good clean comedy. I used to watch this with my parents when I was little, and I watch it with them now once in a while, and even with the young neighborkids(this is one of those titles that are passed down through the generations). This is a true classic that I think will never die. It's a good movie for the young and old, and anyone in between. The remake of the movie is much clearer than the original, and the sound has been tweaked some. For the first time I can actually see in the secret passages and the whole of the 'torcher chamber', and hear everything that Tim Conway says. It also includes an enlightening and funny commentary by Tim Conway and Lang Elliot talking about the silly problems they had while filming, movie facts, and basically just having fun commenting on their work. And with good ol' Tim Conway you can just imagine what that's like. They've also added a slide show with some interesting pictures, one being what the poor car actually looked like while being pulled from the pond. This will make a great addition to anyone's home collection! Once you've seen it, you'll never forget it(probably because you'll have laughed yourself silly)!

Review: I really loved this movie. I used to watch it with my father when I was little and I recently ordered it again. It is still just as funny. It is full of silly humor and Tim conway and Don Knotts are adorable. The movie is full of quirky characters and keeps you on your toes. They just do not make movies like this any more. I truly enjoyed bonding with my family while watching this again.

Summary: Oh how I remember this movie!
Review: I can remember my mom first getting this movie for me when I was about 3 years old, and she told it had Don Knotts & Tim Conway from "The Apple Dumpling Gang" in it! To this day it continues to make me laugh, and it is one of those movies which has withstood the test of time! But with these 2 comedy greats playing the spoofs of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson to solve a murder in a dark haunted mansion, it's a movie every family of any age will treasure! A must for the whole family!

Review: In todays world of puke humor, this movie still reels in the laughs without cussing, sex, or rated X gags. Knotts and Conway are the perfect pair to solve the mystery in this one. Buy it, you won't be sorry! My kids love it as much as I did when I was a kid.

Summary: The Ultimate Saturday Morning Matinee
Review: Highly amusing, often hilarious farce that is a must-own for any fan of Conway or Knotts. The two play bumbling Scotland Yard inspectors sent to a Gothic mansion in the English countryside to investigate a series of suspicious murders. They instantly find themselves amongst an array of screwball characters, hidden passageways, and ghostly encounters. Both actors are at their comic best here and work especially well with each other as they attempt to muddle their way through the mystery with riotous results. The scenes involving the carrier pigeons are especially hilarious.

Summary: Great for Kids into Bumbling Idiocy
Review: I saw this movie about twenty times at the age of six and thought it was fabulous. Upon viewing it now, well...but for kids I think it would be great, scary and funny at the same time. So if you have tots around who like being scared and enjoy watching people bump into things, this movie is right up your alley.

Summary: Good slapstick mysetery.
Review: If you like classic mysteries with a twist, this may be a film for you. This movie is filled with the comedy that viewers have come to expect from Don Knotts and Tim Conway. Also, the scenery of this film is beautiful as the film was made on location at the Biltmore House in Ashville, NC. However, only watch this film if you are in the mood for some Knott-sian comedy, not when you are looking for a serious mystery.

Summary: A couple steps short of perfect....
Review: But let's face it, the fact that this movie made it to DVD is reason to celebrate and it's probably as good as we'll ever get. First things first, I love this film! I just want to comment on some of the technical aspects of the DVD. First of all, the full-screen transfer is beautiful (I don't know if the film was even shot in widescreen)- the colors are so rich and the picture so crisp that it rivals anything produced today. The infamous dark 'secret passage' scenes show every detail - things that just couldn't be seen in an old VHS tape or tv version. The trailer, however, was not given the same treatment as the actual film so don't expect much there. The commentary is a nice bonus with Tim Conway and Lang Elliot reminiscing about the film, providing some insights and lightheartedly goofing on Don Knotts much of the time. There's even a brief mention of how a sequel was planned at one time! For some reason, their commentary assumes you are watching the film for the first time so they purposely don't 'give away' anything, which unfortunately hinders their dialogue a bit. The addition of subtitles during the commentary is something that would have been nice as well. Aside from that, there is a slide show which is nice, although I would have much preferred a cast bio as it really is a nice ensemble. Finally, and this is what prevents this being a 5 star film - the movie is missing a major scene! The classic dinner scene where Dr. Tart gets beaten up by Phyllis is inexplicably nowhere to be found. Classic lines like "You told me we were having pork. How dare you trick me!" "I'll give you 5 bucks if you don't tell her the peas are canned." Also gone is the scene where Tart releases one of his homing pigeons, but the wings stick to his hands. Why oh why are these scenes not in this edition of the film? The one time we'll ever get The Private Eyes on DVD and it's not perfect. If Tim Conway, Lang Elliot or anyone from Hen's Tooth Video reads this, I'll be happy to raid your archives so we can come up with a definitive version of what will certainly be a classic.
