Rating: Summary: Lost in Ethnocentricism Review: I could not believe how much attention this film has garnered given its use of offensive Japanese stereotypes which inadvertently and ultimately detract from the artistic merits of the film. I found the protagonist played by Scarlett Johansson so unlikeable when she continued to say such dumb comments about why the Japanese mix up their r's and l's. She's supposed to be a Yale graduate but yet she doesn't know that there are more a few thousand languages in the world, which don't have a r's and l's in their compendium of sounds? There was a continual undercurrent theme of the Japanese being strange and incomprehensible, which definitely verged on racism, however, covert. They are mocked at because the characters in the film did not care to delve further into the culture of the country that they were visiting. The characters are portrayed as isolated and lonely because of their cultural ambiance (foreign and strange Tokyo) not by their choices to remain aloof and uncurious. These characters were not intelligent cultured people though I believe it was the artist's intention to depict them as such. The dialogue was grossly insipid. The only real parts of the film are when Bob, Bill Murray's character and Charlotte, Johansson's character share some beautifully orchestrated intimate, but platonic moments. It's packaged to be an artsy movie, but laden with cliches and cheap laughs at the expense of the Japanese. I understand that the isolationist element was the backdrop to the romance between the 2 leads. The creation of a milieu conducive to feelings of alienation experienced by the main characters did not need to use Japan-bashing. This storyline could have taken place anywhere, in New York City, Iraq, or a party in local neighborhood. But must Coppola resort to racism in order create to the effect that she did? A more skillful artist would NOT.
Rating: Summary: I honestly wish the system would allow less than 1 star. Review: This movie has one scene that is worth a look (and it lasts about 2 minutes), but the rest is trash. It is one of the most boring movies I have ever suffered through. In the beginning, you are not sure what's happening, but you're sure that it's slow and dull. About half way through, you finally understand what the movie is about and where it's going and you are extremely disappointed. Finally, you reach the end and if you are still awake, you are feeling extremely unfulfilled and robbed. I don't understand where all the hype comes from. It must be one of those movies that people don't dare to hate because somewhere along the line it became "cool" to like it. You will feel robbed even if you don't pay money to see it. I want my hour and a half back!
Rating: Summary: The Worst Movie I've Seen In Years Review: I watched this movie for 2 reasons- first I'm a big Bill Murray fan, and second, the movie had all this hype around it with it's praise from critics and the awards it had recieved. I was bored within the first 5 minutes but I just figured that it had to get better... WRONG! Nothing happens!! It just shows Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson looking bored all the time, which makes you bored. There is no story line or point to this film. Don't buy this if you are looking to be entertained, or moved.
Rating: Summary: Boring, Went around in a circle Review: This movie was very hyped up about how great it was. I was very disappointed because the movie went in circles. I found it very boring and repeptitive. The main reason I didn't like this movie was because it didn't capture my interest at all.
Rating: Summary: They should force prisoners to watch this as punishment. Review: I'm a hard person to bore. I can sit through the entire 4-hour direcetors cut of Dances With Wolves or a chick flic and be more entertained. This is actually boring, boring, boring.
Rating: Summary: don't miss the point! Review: I find the reactions on the part of various reviewers to this movie interesting to observe; others have commented quite adequately on what the movie is about so I won't go through another summary. Those who lambast this as the worst movie of the year may be missing the point. I greatly enjoyed this movie precisely because Sofia Coppola has an uncanny talent for creating scenes where what is unsaid is far more important than what is explicitly stated. There are undercurrents, by plays and emotions that come across clearly without a word being spoken. Another uncanny talent that Sofia Coppola possesses is the ability to create atmosphere. Viewers who have seen "The Virgin Suicides" will know what I mean. On the surface, ordinary American family; underneath, SO much else going on, and a really eerie atmosphere. Overall, if you don't enjoy movies that are based on character development and atmosphere rather than plot, you will not like this movie. Otherwise, it is a delight to watch. It was also VERY refreshing to see a relationship developing without the need for hot and steamy sex scenes.
Rating: Summary: Wow, this film is very ZZzzzzzzzzzzzzz..................... Review: I CONFESS: I didn't make it through this film, I fell asleep halfway through it. Plus, it bugs me that I used a free rental to watch this ode to paint drying on film. I just wish the critics and the Oscar judges would be as honest as I am about this film. All the snappy dialog in the world can't hide the fact that this film GOES ABSOLUTELY NOWHERE. Why don't they just create a "let's give Bill Murray an Oscar award for being such a swell guy" Oscar category and be done with it.
Rating: Summary: Very Slow Review: This movie absolutely bored my wife and I to death. It was very slow starting out and continued to drag on throughout the movie. We didn't finish watching it because we fell a sleep. I give it a 2 because I like Bill Murray.
Rating: Summary: Lost in watching this worthless piece of .... Review: If you've had trouble falling asleep, this is the film for you. I hav'nt seen a film with this much action since Andy Worhals Empire State Building. I've worked in Tokyo under similar circumstances and had an exciting and eventfilled experience. These principle characters come off as a couple of dull folks from the USA. Why all the fuss about this film? Somebodies pockets must be getting lined. And I'm a big Bill Murry fan. I'd rate this film 0 stars and 5 ZZZZZs.
Rating: Summary: Can you spell 'BORING?' Review: This is a non-movie! Nothing, but NOTHING, ever happens. I forced myself to watch to the end -- what a waste of time. And Bill Murray was nominated for an Oscar for this performance? My advice is don't watch unless somebody pays you!
