Summary: Enchanting
Review: A wonderful brave script that completely deserves the Oscar for going against many people's preconceived notions and doing the industry thing. Those who think that who she is related to has something to do with her success should watch more movies. Sofia Coppola's father has never made a movie like this, or like "The Virgin Suicides" in his life.

Both Murray and Johansson inhabit their characters. On Murray's part it's not broad comedy but just a man who looks at the world in a humorous way. Those who criticise supposed "racism" should note that Bob Harris would look at the US in EXACTLY the same way if he was back home. It's not racist to note that on balance many Japanese are shorter, just as it's not racist to note that on balance many Americans are overweight. (Unless CBS, and CNN and ABC and many others are racist against Americans).

Anyway that's not even an issue. Some just didn't like this film for their own reasons, and there's an old saying "He who wants to beat a dog will find a stick."

For those who have adult emotions and realize many beautiful things in life remain unexpressed and unsaid, "Lost in Translation" is an unforgettable film

Summary: Jetlagged on the Other Side of the World
Review: Ever travelled far enough to experience jet-lag? The feeling of being wide-awake in the middle of the night, and walking around like a zombie when you're supposed to be alert and working? You feel like you're enveloped in cotton wool, like there's a filter between you and the world around you. It can affect you even when you come home, so even your everyday life seems somehow strange, and you begin to look at it in a strange dislocated way.

That's just one of the feelings this film captures superbly. Two people coping with less than satisfactory lives find one another in the midst of a world that is strange to them. Probably the young woman's marriage won't last. Her photographer husband is too starstruck and over-awed by his clients. Bob, the actor, has lived enough to see this, and - I think - enough to know that He probably will carry on with his life.

There is solace in friendship and finding a kindred spirit. Sometimes it's like having a lifebelt thrown when you need it. Coppola's script is superb and subtle. Some people don't like subtle, which accounts for the number of low reviews here. If you're one of them this isn't a film for you. For everyone else it's an unforgettable and aching experience.

Summary: DON'T BUY THIS MOVIE!!!
Review: This is one of the worst movies to ever end up on film. Don't waste your money. Wait until it comes on DirecTV, Cable, HBO, or Showtime. Rent it at Blockbuster Video. This is not a five-star movie. Don't be fooled by the hype that is being generated to empty your pocketbooks. She won an Oscar because she had a famous last name. Without it, this movie never would have left the port. This was a racist flop of epic proportions. Please don't judge good movies according to the standards this trashy movie has set forth.

Summary: so that's why she got the oscar!
Review: I must admit, as much as I'm all for girl power, but I was skeptical about Sophia Coppolla's win on her first film. Did she get it because of her name or her talent? I heard a story on NPR last week that was about a tape recording of her as a child that she made. Even in this recording of a moment of her childhood, I heard the thoughts of a brilliant young girl. Then I saw it. My god, it's brilliant. I completely understood what she was trying to say verbally and symbolically. There are so many layers to this film that it's almost as enjoyable to realize them, as it is to watch them unfold. And the music is brilliant and perfect.

Summary: Huh?
Review: There's nothing like a great artsy movie. This is nothing like a great artsy movie. The only good things about it are merely coincidental. Although it's nice to see good scenery and hear a Japanese kareoke version of "God Save The Queen" (Sex Pistols version, mind you), nothing else that blocks the camera here is worthy of my time. The performances everyone talks about...simply aren't there. Bill Murray's worst performance EVER...he doesn't laugh, doesn't cry, doesn't even alter his facial expression the ENTIRE MOVIE! Scarlet Johansen (or however you spell it) doesn't do much more.

There is NO plot.

The jokes aren't funny.

Every line is monotone.

And frankly, I could have gone the rest of my life without seeing those gargantuan Japanese strippers.

Summary: pure magic
Review: it's truly magical, leaves you not merely thinking about it but feeling it forever after watching it. it connects with your heart, not just visceral senses like most movies. it tells of a wonder friendship, of the unexplainable connections that people make. it gets to you, and relaxes you, makes you yearn, and makes you smile. it's an experience. this just became my favorite movie

Summary: I'm Lost, On Lost in Translation
Review: Lost is the keyword for this movie: Lost money for buying the DVD, Lost time for watching it, and Lost on all the hype surrounding it. Much of the hype is that it was low-budget film (by current Hollywood stardards). After the first 20 minutes of the movie it showed. I love Bill Murray, and really wanted to like this movie, but the effort it would take to find one reason to like it would be more Lost time.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: The problem was the hype
Review: The worst that could happen (and it did) was all the hype created around it. Hyped movies tend to be viewed with unconscious caution.

Lost in translation *is* a good movie, a great movie even. But in a quiet kind of way. If you're expecting something from it, you may or may not get it; but if you simply watch it without so many expectations, you'll surely find much more.

Summary: I was expecting more...
Review: After hearing all the rave reviews for this movie and seeing it nominated for so many academy awards, I was expecting this movie to be awe-inspiring and full of deep meaning. Well, to be quite honest...it isn't.

I understand where this movie was trying to go. It was attempting to show that sometimes even the smallest interaction with another human being can lead to major changes in your life. I know this, but i was still disappointed. My major gripes with the movie can be summed up in two points though.

One: I can appreciate a moment of silence in a movie...but this one had WAY too many. While Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson each have their moments of great acting, I was too annoyed with the endless silences and long pauses that the movie seemed plagued with to really notice them. A silent moment to allow the viewer to absorb the visual angle of the movie or as an emphasis on an emotional connection is a wonderful device, but when more than half the movie is completely silent and devoid of character i feel it becomes cliche' and melodramatic.

Two: I honestly did not care about their characters. I am supposed to feel sorry for Charlotte and Bob, but they are both such selfish and flighty people that i found it difficult to empathyze with them. Perhaps this was the point of the movie, but i feel that i've been cheated when i watch a movie and find no emotional connection with the characters.

In short (yeah, right). I just don't think this movie lived up to the hype that was put on it. It had some wonderful visual moments and some great acting (at times), but i wouldn't sit through it again, much less buy it.

Summary: Much Ado About Nothing
Review: This film is about nothing. There is no intellect. There is no inspiration. It goes nowhere, and starts nowhere. Instead, it uses the Japanese people and their culture as comedic devices. Unfortunately, it was disrespectful, insulting, and racist. This movie isn't even worth a one-star rating. It's definitely on my worst list. I wouldn't even wish this movie upon my worst enemy. Yes, it was just that bad.

It's unfortunate when people have to put other cultures down in order to feel good about themselves. Sofia said she wanted to make a movie in Japan, but she should have left this one on the cutting-room floor. The entire movie is "Lost in Translation." Can someone explain to me the purpose in making a movie with no plot, empty characters, and meaningless dialog??? You can't, because it would be a fruitless exercise.

Hollywood likes boring, derogatory crap with big names attached to it, and this is all the proof you will need.
