Rating: Summary: Definatley not for everyone... Review: This movie is a movie one where you either loved it or hated it. The movie was done in a manor so that if you did not connect to any of the charecters the movie would become boring. I loved this movie because it is cynical, dry and an incredible story . as far as the perfomances go Bill Muray is as usual extremly dry and extremly funny. Scarlett Johannson also gave a great performance. Overall great movie. I would note however that there is a plot a really great one you just have to be able to see it.
Rating: Summary: Average Review: This movie is neither terrible nor great. Bill Murray is fairly humorous at times. The good parts of this movie are based on Bill Murray's work and what the various entities of Sophia's father's high powered production team produce. In other words, any of us could have made this movie with the resources Ms. Coppola had and it would have come out about the same. Again not a terrible movie, but it is somewhat limp. The story is not terribly compelling. Sorry, it just isn't. Mostly autobiographical evidently. Some cheap shots are taken at the Japs' expense, especially in the language department. The hooker scene for example. The hooker keeps saying to Bill Murray "lip it off" meaning to say "rip it off" referring to her stockings. What's creative or funny about that? You can hear that kind of humor on any morning drive 'neck radio station. The scene is tolerable due to Bill Murray's antics but that's all. The movie's plotline is kind of dreary. To make it more "artistic" many landscape shots are present. You can only do so many shots of Tokyo out the hotel window or from driving around in cars before you realize they are substitute for a solid plotline. I liked the ambiguous ending though that will make it even worse for many of you. Definitely a chick movie I'd say but it's watchable.
Rating: Summary: I will never get those two hours back Review: I can easily see why Bill Murray was nominated for an Oscar. His performance was exceptional. However, it was not enough to save one of the most boring movies I have ever seen. It was slow, plotless, and had a pointless ending. As a character study it is mildly enjoyable, but only if you can stay awake. Blech!
Rating: Summary: I can't get this movie off my mind. Review: After I saw this movie, I sat in my bed and thought about it for an hour and then came online to read anything I could about it. I've never seen a movie that touched me on such a personal level and I've never even been to Tokyo. Lost in Translation is like a subtle perfume, it's not a story as much a feeling that makes you tingle every time you watch (or smell) it. Whenever I feel down about anything, I watch it and it lifts my spirits. There's no other movie like this- it changed the way I look at life and film. Best movie if the whole wide world.
Rating: Summary: Comfort Food for the Soul Review: Life, as philosophers like to remind us, is a continuous journey in search of meaning. While there are those among us who don't have the time in their busy lives for such depressing existential ruminations, there are others who are forced to slow down, once in a while, and look deep inside at where they are. Some people do it through religion or philosophy, then there are those who rediscover themselves simply through each other. By now, the tale of Bob and Charlotte is familiar to us. The fact that two complete strangers a generation apart can bond in such a profound and meaningful friendship on unfamiliar soil can only bear testament to the power of true relationships. What makes this movie all the more indelible and bittersweet, especially to us hopeless romantics, is the sheer believability of the characters. With Charlotte, fifty-ish Bob found escape and the perfect excuse to relive the carefree days of his youth; in Bob, twenty-something Charlotte found someone on whose shoulders she can lean on and in whom she can confide even more than her oft-absent husband. For better or worse, we come to care for Bob and Charlotte in their plight; we relate to their loneliness and deep yearning at what 'might have been' if only we could turn back the clock and do our lives over, and perhaps most of all we see in these lost souls a little bit of ourselves. So what does Sofia Coppola's masterpiece of mood and tone tell us? That we should live life to the fullest each day and make the best of our circumstances? That we should find our own happiness through that of another person? That life is transient and we should simply let the little flights of fancy of life sweep us away whenever we can, if only for a brief moment? There is no right answer. 'Lost in Translation' speaks to each of us in our own unique way, and that is part of what makes this movie so special. To the would-be critics who put down this movie solely on its being 'overhyped,' I would suggest that they look at it under less prejudiced light. Never mind the numerous accolades, the Golden Globes and Oscar nominations. Overlook the fact that it's gotten 'over 80 four-star reviews.' If you judge 'Lost in Translation' by its own merits, it is still one of the best movies of its kind in years. Just because it's not for everyone doesn't make it a bad movie.
Rating: Summary: all about hype! Review: I think that if this film was done by anyone else, other than another Coppola, that it wouldn't have received very much attention. This film is mildly entertaining.
Rating: Summary: Worst movie -EVER! Review: By far the worst movie I have seen in years.
Rating: Summary: Hmmmmmmmmm Review: Okay, the movie was slightly scattered as far as well-organized scripts go. Additionally, the dialogue, when active, was slightly dull and anticlimactic. I liked it though. How strange is that? If you want a movie that drives straight to your "misunderstood aspects" and those you think are never heard in today's busy society, see this flick. Otherwise, maybe you should see something else.
Rating: Summary: Whets the apetite for Tokyo Review: The movie is entertaining enough for an evening's viewing, although it certainly doesn't do any justice to the Park Hyatt Tokyo which is much better up close than via Sofia Coppola's cameras. As a Tokyo resident, I thought some of the Tokyo scenes were too stereotyped. However, the best parts were the encounters of Bill Murray with the Japanese, including the hotel staff, the tv host and the production crew staff for the commercials. These were kind of exaggerated, but they nevertheless had our whole group in stitches. Some people may find the dialogue and pace slow, but in a way this is Japan for you - not in-your-face all the time and full of subtle and quiet changes that slowly creep up behind you. I recently read a novel called Tokyo Stories (www.tokyostories.net) which is about the life of foreigners in Japan, and much of it was also set in the Park Hyatt Tokyo. It was an interesting complement to see Tokyo from two sets of foreign eyes, and to see this amazing hotel against two very different backdrops. The subject matter is similar but the movie is subtle and proceeds at a leisurely pace while the book is fast-paced and direct. What a nice contrast!
Rating: Summary: The popcorn was all that made it bearable. Review: Oh yes, to all those who whine that the reason it's unappreciated is because it's above our understanding - we "got it". Two lonely hearts, beat as one, and then are torn from each other forever. Who cares? This was the most depressing waste of time I've spent in front of a TV. I am just so grateful I rented it and yet still regretful that I wasted $3. What was the story? Infidelity, loneliness (which we are to understand excuses the infidelity), two people without meaning or hope trying to hold a decent conversation but failing miserably - all with unexplainable nudity, smoking addictions and - for kicks and maybe a few laughs - let's have it all happen in Japan. Haven't we seen this same plot unfold down the street, across town, for some in their own homes? Because life seems empty it is suddenly OK to cheat on your spouses, carouse like you are 17, smile smugly as if you are above all around you and in the end become more lonelier and empty than before? Oh yes - we got it. For all those who claim we have misunderstood this movie and therefore don't appreciate it - no. We just don't like it. To the jaded, empty, bitter and jilted: enjoy. The rest of us will keep an eye out for a movie of substance.
