Summary: This movie is a drag, despite all the drag queens!
Review: .
Although it's not quite "Valley of the Dolls', this film tries very hard to fit into that genre.

I think the problem with this movie is that while "Valley of the Dolls" worked due to its unintentional humor, this film tries too hard and fails.

Some of the intended humor is just too mean or twisted for my personal liking. I actually found the character "Edie" very scary, and more than a bit nauseating (especially in her heavily drug-induced nude scene)!

Still, it's an interesting movie, although I don't know if I could sit through it twice.

Kudos to the "girls", especially Varla Jean Merman (daughter of Ethel Merman and Ernest Borgnine!) and Coco Peru.

Summary: Hilarious, outrageous. Funniest movie of 2003
Review: At a mere 79 minutes, this movie is jam-packed with hilarity. A low-budget indie, this movie will find its cult audience on DVD. Its just a shame that MGM is charging an outrageous $29.95 for a bare-bones release. There's no behind the scenes mini-documentaries and worse of all--no commentaries by the film's trio of stars (and talented director/writer). I was hoping for at least one commentary track because the three drag queen performers probably would certainly have supplied commentary that rivialed the film for laughs. The film was produced by Independent Film Channel. You wont find a funnier, faster-paced bad-taste comedy and it doesnt outstay its welcome.

Summary: You Go "Girls"!
Review: Despite the off-putting lame-o title (there's some suggestion that the more appropriate title "All About Evie" was scrapped to avoid focusing on just one character), this is a howl-and-a-half, sort of a latter-day rethinking of the early Divine-era John Waters' pix. Be prepared for multiple viewings to catch all the lines you missed because you were laughing too loud. If someone's smart, they'll hire Jack Plotnick, Coco Peru and Varla Jean Merman and spin this off into its own sitcom.

Summary: Girls will be guys
Review: First the good news: the acting, the makeup, the sets, the colors all add up to one of the most gorgeously campy looking films of all time. All three of the leads are very good. Having only seen Jack Plotnick in non-drag roles (Ellen, The Jenny McCarthy Show on MTV, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), I have to say he was very funny and his wig was perfect, but the real honor goes to Jeffery Robeson whose Varla (his off-screen drag persona as well) is so spot-on perfect that a few times I had to remind myself that this wasn't an actual woman. Even more amazing is seeing the male Robeson out of makeup (on the extras) as a nice-looking young guy.

The bad news is that as great as this film looks and is acted (at times, it seems to bring to mind Comedy Central's "Strangers with Candy" for the way the actors play many things straight), the film suffers from "Saturday Night Live" sketch syndrome: it goes on too long and runs out of humor steam. An hour or 45 minutes would have been sufficient for the film's running time. The plot gets stretched and by the time Evie's "speciamercial" revelation occurs, I wasn't laughing anymore. The sense of glee was wearing thin, and not even the pool party flashbacks could perk the film up again. Plus, the "naked" Evie was pretty gross and unnecessary.

All in all, a decent film with a generous portion of extras on the DVD.

Summary: Always and Forever...
Review: From the moment the theme song started, I was hooked! The menu sequences are even entertaining. I was goated into watching this once and have since watched it twice in as many weeks -- once with the audio commentary. The first time I watched it I had to leave the room to gain my composure after Evie's "As-tro-PHY-si-cist!" line.

Summary: Gay camp at its best
Review: I don't usually attend drag night at the local gay bar. Drag never appealed to me. I find drag shows to be fun but a little too outrageous for my taste, so I was a bit leary to rent this film. However, I'm more than pleased that I took the chance. It was bleepin funny. I don't remember laughing so hard. The queens are bitchy, vindictive and abusive. They undermine and embarrass each other and do everything possible to sabotage one another's life. I'm a normal, reserved and caring guy. I don't poke fun of others or sit around with my gay friends and gossip about the other homos because I just don't see the sense of it. This movie was so outrageous that I took the barbs and bitchy quips with a grain of salt...you almost have to make it through the entire film...because it's filled with campy venom.

I'm still shocked at the quality writing of this little film. Whoever those writers are...I just hope they aren't realists. And, if they are, stay as far away from them as possible, unless you want some pie in your face and a kick in the crotch. Funny, funny stuff! Worth the rent or buy.

Summary: Hilarious!
Review: I had previously seen Coco in "Trick" and always wished for more of her. When I read that she was in this movie I knew I had to see it. I had been waiting for a long time for this movie to come out on DVD because it did not come to theaters where I live. I was not disappointed and I was surprised at how extremely funny this movie was. My friends and I found ourselves quoting many lines from this movie. The extras are great-there are even a few Easter Eggs of Evie! Evie reminded me of a cross between Patsy and Edina from Abfab and Jerri Blank from "Strangers With Candy". After returning this DVD, I had to go out and buy it. This is my new favorite movie!

Summary: Hilarious Romp!
Review: I loved this DVD! I had no idea that the stars were drag queens -- especially Varla!

I loved the sets, the absurd dialogue and the fun.

Take it for what it is -- a campy, bawdy romp and you will have fun!
