Summary: A New Rocky Horror - or just a "horror"?
Review: Waaaay back in the 1980's there was a small film called "Band of the Hand". In that film, a young actor by the name of John Cameron Mitchell appears. I had never heard of him before, but was told that he was the son of actor Cameron Mitchell. The film is good, but hardly one which I felt would provide us with really talented actors, much less writers, directors, etc.

The same John Cameron Mitchell gives us "Hedwig". And what a fun gift to be given. This is a bizarre little film, with the most outrageous premise I've ever encountered - and yet - it gets total buy-in. The songs in this film are good, but not terribly memorable. The acting is superb and yet I doubt most people would know a single sole in it from other films.

One of my gripes (and maybe I just don't get it) is that the part of the guitarist in the band is played by a woman playing the role as a man. This is never referenced, so my assumption is that we are to assume that this character is supposed to really be a man (but the vocalizations required a woman's range....? I don't know). I found it distracting because I was waiting for something to come of this, but it didn't. And yet, in a film where the lead is a boy/girl who is the product of a botched sex change operation, I thought that surely something would come of it.

If this seems confusing, it is. But it's not a bad confusing. This movie isn't for everyone. I don't even know if it really is for me. It's something that was fun to watch once, but I don't know that I would want to see it again.

Summary: A strong clear vision
Review: I cried like a schoolgirl at a Beatles concert watching this movie. I cried for Hansel, Hedwig, and all the misfits and losers. I cried cause I saw myself in this drag queen from east berlin. I cried mostly cause I was watching something good.

Summary: A Movie That Looks Great in Wigs
Review: I see a light on the horizon. A light that I have not seen in a long time. And that light, my friends is the genre of Movie Musicals. Finally after almost a 10 year dormancy. the genre is coming back and this movie is one of the best movie musicals I've seen in a long time. Based on one of the most risque Off-broadway musicals, This production was adapted, directed, and even starring John Cameron Mitchell one of the shows original creators. Mitchell has managed to adapt his work with seeming ease. The camera working is colorful, energetic, and intense. It doesn't miss any of the important details, and manages to make every scene a unique experience.

The Story goes like this...
Hansel, a homosexal, east german boy, is eager to escape the opressive atmosphere of East Germany. One day he meets a soldier. They want to get married and escape to America. But unfortunately Hansel needs a sex change operation. The operation is botched, leaving him with the so called "Angry Inch". well upon arrival in Kansas. The now titled "Hedwig" is abandoned by his husband. Well soon afterwards we follow Hedwig's turbulent rise to glory as a rock star.

Mitchell's work on this film is truly visionary, as well as original, striking, moving, and brilliant. You don't often see a film that will mercilessly tell a story with such sensitive subject matter. While at the same time dare to make a film from a genre that most cinematic ignoramuses think is dead and gone. WELL Guess what you pathetic "Freddy Got Fingered" fans. Your immature flatulence jokes will never reign as long as there are independent filmmakers, daring to make films that the neutered Hollywood Studios wouldn't dare to touch!

Do yourself a favor, forget the multiplexes, go find yourself a small independent film theatre and see this exciting and inventive movie musical!!! Be sides, it's not like Hollywood has the gall to make anything original.

Summary: I LOVE HEDWID AND HER ANGRY INCH
Review: Hedwig is the best movie I have seen in a long time. The first half is so hilarious, focusing on Hedwig's "club" gigs. Her humor is biting and witty. Her outfits and hair are fabulous. I love it! The second half shifts gears and focuses on her and Tommy Gnosis, possibly her "other half?" The scenes with Tommy are the only ones that lack the excitment the rest of the film has. I've already seen it twice already and I can't wait to see it again. The soundtrack and book are both great too. This story of a little slip of a girlyboy from east berlin that becomes the internationally ignored song stylist barely standing before us is the best thing I have seen in years!

Summary: encore!
Review: we screamed "encore" during the closing credits... we all ran out for the soundtrack the next day ... haven't stopped listening to it since ... too enjoyable for words!

Summary: Entertaining, and even a little thought-provoking
Review: This is a really good film. The performances are right on - John Cameron Mitchell has tons of personality and great comic timing. The music is part Iggy Pop, part Rocky Horror, part Meatloaf... interesting and definitely catchy. My only quibble is that there are a lot of interesting side characters who don't get developed - the Yitzhak character and the whole rest of the band - there are teeny references to their story but my impression is that there was a lot of interesting stuff that got left out in the editing process. There are also lots of fun throwaway sight gags. Put me down for a pre-order on the DVD...

Summary: HEDWIG ROCKS THE TRAILER!
Review: One of the better things I've seen in my lifetime. If you get a chance to see BOTH the stage production and the film, run--don't walk--and get yourself some tickets. The film is it's own entity and is extremely well-acted and performed over all. Don't miss it or you WILL be sorry!

Summary: disappointing
Review: Although sometimes very entertaining (e.g., Hansel's dance scene), behind the flashy exterior is a lot of sentimental nonsense. The songs are mostly uninteresting, the lyrics are mostly embarrassing, and the film's philosophy is almost entirely juvenile. The end of the film flails toward something interesting, but fails. A lot of people have enjoyed this movie, and many more will also enjoy it -- but if you're thinking of going, know what you're in for. Colorful it may be; meaningful it is not.

Summary: Hedwig blows the doors off every movie this summer!
Review: Probably the most thoughtful and artistic film to come out this summer (if not this year). Musically and visually, it accomplishes what Moulin Rouge did with a fraction of the budget. Full of humor and pathos, this film explores the most basic of human emotions- one of which being the simple search for love and acceptance. However, it does so without ever being preachy or heavy-handed. John Cameron Mitchell has created one of the most mature "first films" (in terms of his directorial confidence) I've seen in a long time. In a summer full of mind-numbing [stuff], it is refreshing to see a film that makes you think and feel to the extent that "Hedwig" does. (Unless you count the feelings of complete despair and sadness that accompany any viewing of "Planet Of The Apes" or "Tomb Raider.")
