Summary: A highly engaging work!
Review: Ellen Burstyn and Alda Alda have collaborated in highly thought-provoking and touching performances. We follow the characters from their mid-twenties into their fifties(at five-year intervals) and are privy to the changes that have occurred at each step. So many things change for most of us over five years. The challenge here is to seamlessly weave the new expository information into each of the fairly short scenes -- and the attempt has been quite successful. Burstyn is completely convincing at each step along the way; she easily passes for both a twenty-something and a fifty-something -- and Alda is just about as good. If you have ever shed a tear during a movie, be prepared....It is satisfying to realize that such a wonderful production can be achieved on what must have been an extremely low budget (there were only two or three sets, all fairly simple -- and there were no other actors worth mentioning other than the two stars.) I would have liked to have had the option of rating this film 4 and 1/2 stars! I suggest buying it and passing it on!

Summary: Enjoyable Subtleties
Review: Every few years I pull out this video, and enjoy it again. It is fun watching George and Doris grow up over 25 years, and seeing them realize their full potential.

However, what I enjoy even more are the relationships between Doris and George and their spouses. We never meet the spouses, but we hear as George and Doris talk about them---the good things and the bad things. The spouses become real people and we watch over the years as George and Doris' relationships with them grow and change. I found myself really liking George's down-to-earth wife, from her accepting comment: "When I married an accountant, I always thought his eyes would go first. . ." to the way she turned a potential social faux pas with an ambassador into something quite different(to George's embarassment!). And then there's Doris' bewildered husband...

Summary: Touching, funny, and wise
Review: Filmed at Heritage House, a sprawling Bed & Breakfast on California's Mendocino Coast, Same Time Next year features Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn as an adulterous couple who, over a quarter of a century, meet annually for a weekend at the same hideaway. Besides spanning the lives of this couple, who are each married-with-family, the film also spans some of the most convulsive, tumultuous, and confusing years of the country's history.
Beautiful, tasteful, and worth watching again and again.

Summary: Touching, Funny, Heartfelt
Review: From the moment the Johnny Mathis song "The Last Time I felt Like This" begins, you'll be hooked. This is a marvelous character study of two people who take a "time out" from their real lives and connect every year... through good times and bad. You will laugh with the abusurdity of Alan Alda's tendency to "not think things through" and marvel at Ellen Burstyn's incredible performance as she grows through the years. I defy you to remain unmoved by the "hippie" scene, or to not laugh about Alan's wife's referred-to antics in the bad and good stories the couple relate to one another each year. By the way, the song is avilable on "The Best of Johnny Mathis"... Wonderful!

Summary: The best movie ever
Review: I can watch this movie over and over and never get tired of it. I have watched it so many times that whenever I see it on TV, I watch it again even though I own the VHS tape. I would love to see it come out in DVD. Alan Alda is at his best in this movie. The movie takes me from uproarious laughter to sobbing in sorrow. In other words, I love it!

Summary: "Alan Alda quality"
Review: I have always been an Alan Alda fan (ever since MASH).When I first saw this movie, 16 years ago, I was impressed by the way it was set up: over a longer period of time. Also the emotions, portrayed (by both actors) were so believable and the part where Alan Alda struggles to tell Ellen Bursteyn about his son being killed, just about ripped my heart out. I do not condone adultery, but this play/movie has the class that seems to come natural for Alan Alda. This is the first video that I have bought for myself - it is worth owning!

Summary: If only I could have this...
Review: I have always been intrigued by this subject, always.
Although I am happily married,I have always wondered about the possibility of an outside affair that would have a couple both on the same level physically and mentally. This movie makes this look possible. The friendship, the passion and the love they share keep them young. I believe their relationship keeps their otherwise mundane lives, compelling. I am sure they grew and stretched their minds in ways that wouldn't have happened otherwise. Same Time, Next Year gives me the hope that this is possible, and if not, it gives me the dream of it.

Summary: Soul Mates - revisited
Review: I read the "Soul Mate" review and have to agree. Its a greatmovie. This Movie belongs to Bernadette M. And myself, we are that movies real life counterpart. I found my soulmate and have been in love with her since I first met her. In essence, everytime I see that movie I think of her and vice versa. If ever a movie depicted the true dynamics of such a situation, this movie is it. Bernadette M. and I have been in love for over 10 years, and I'll never stop being deeply in love with her.
