Summary: A Sure Bet.
Review: Mom and Dad are gone for the week. An18-year-old Tom Cruise is left alone to watch the house the Porsche, and one cool stereo. What's a guy to do? He could study for his upcoming tests, prepare a product for his after school club, and practice for his interview on Friday night with a representative from Princeton.

Or..... he could have fun. Well, most men may try to be responsible, when they are alone. When your friends find out that your parents are gone, trying to be responsible is probably a wasted effort. "Risky Business" is a warning to parents, don't leave your kids alone - unless you are prepared for the consequences.

For the most part this movie builds on itself. The scenes lead nicely from one to another beginning with an adolescent call to a questionable woman. Eventually Tom is running a bordello for the weekend so he can raise money to buy back his mother's crystal egg, stolen by one of these prostitutes in the first place.

At its heart Risky Business is about a boy trying to do what his parents want, in ways they would never approve. It is funny. It is extremely well made. I found myself laughing several times, but more then that, I found myself relating to the characters. We all have done things that have gone wrong, here they just went really wrong; but they eventually get better. Along the way we are treated to a first rate comedy/coming of age film. I highly recommend it, even if you saw it years ago.

Summary: Are You Ready For Risky Business?
Review: Oh my gosh, I can't even begin to describe how fun the movie Risky Business is. The movie is all about Joel (Tom Cruise) who is in his senior year of high school, and really wants to get into Princeton. While his parents are away and Joel is home by himself, he calls up a prostitute named Lana and kind of falls in love with her. Joel is intrested in business, so he and Lana start up a one night brothel @ his house. All through the movie you are left with the same question running through your mind - Does he get into Princeton? The only way you can find out is if you see the movie that started Tom Cruise's acting spree ~ Risky Business!

Summary: Risky Business Rocks!
Review: On paper,a movie about an entrepreneurial high school senior turning his parents' suburban Chicago home into a brothel while they're out of town sounds rather broad, but this early Tom Cruise vehicle pushes beyond the typical Teen Virgin Comedy by cleverly tapping into the "greed is good" zeitgeist of the ultra-yuppiefied 80's."Risky Business" also presages films like "The Ice Storm" and "American Beauty" with its similar "Sodom in Suburbia" setting. The film benefits from an intelligent(and frequently hilarious) script and skillful visual style that separates it from the(brat)pack of John Hughes films that seem to hog most of the "80's movie" spotlight. While the oft-shown "underwear karaoke" is quite amusing, the most memorable moment occurs between Cruise and co-star Rebecca DeMornay during a late night subway ride that remains, to this day, one of the most artfully erotic love scenes in modern cinema (and no one takes thier clothes off!!)"Risky Business" was also one of the first MTV-influenced movies, and makes excellent use of its soundtrack music. A gross of $6,000 would make any boy happy, except when he has to give it all away to Guido the killer pimp.

Summary: Great Movie!
Review: One of my all-time faves. A smart, edgy, funny movie about teenagers that doesn't take the low common denominator route of Porky's or the gazillion of other teenage sex comedies made in the 80's. Great, atmospheric synthesizer music by Tangerine Dream. Extremely well-directed (what is Paul Brickman doing these days?). I highly recommend this DVD.

Summary: Purrfect !
Review: One of the better teenage movies of the 1980's. What impressed me most is the story is so real & probably a part of everyone's lives. Tom Cruise is an innocent teenager, who is forced by his friends to take advantage of his parents' absence from home & invites a call-girl over. What starts off as an interesting night for Cruise slowly turns into a nightmare. He runs his Dad's priceless Porsche into Lake Michigan by carelessness, gets suspended from college & gets very close to a real-life debt situation ! Rest of the film is seen Cruise straightening his life along with little or no help from his buddies. The film often highlites the phrase - What the heck ? Take some chances in life....Be a future enterpriser, signalling the need to use every given opportunity that life offers into a money making investment. Joe Pantoliano shines as Guido the killer pimp. Kurt Masur also excels as the bewildered school correspondent who comes to interview Cruise. The film scores in almost all departments - Editing, Screenplay, Direction & an excellent score by Tangerine Dream. They provide a very haunting score titled ''Love on a Real Train, wherein we see Tom Cruise making love to Rebecca De Mornay in Chicago's EL train late @ nite when none is aboard the train. The producers could re-release the film with a 5.1 DD soundtrack that could certainly enhance the film's outlook even more.

Summary: Essential 80's "Business"
Review: Rarely will you find a video store without RISKY BUSINESS. Not only is it a contemporary classic, but it was also Tom Cruise's breakthrough film and a major hit. While reputed to be a very good movie, upon watching it, I found it to be something else. It's an excellent movie.

Tom Cruise plays Joel Goodson, a high-school kid who is just that - a good son. He's responsible, careful, and trusted. But when his parents leave town for the week, Joel decides to loosen up - but after he nervously invites call girl Lana (Rebecca De Mornay) into his house, everyone goes horridly wrong. With only a few days left to go, Joel must raise his grades, make $8,000, get back stolen furniture, and escape from the clutches of Guino (Joe Pontoliano), the killer pimp. Work is hell. And Joel knows it.

This movie is great. It wildly exceeded by expectations, and is much better than it's said to be. Cruise is great - the fact that RISKY BUSINESS is Cruise's first major film is enough to make it worth the watch, anyway; De Mornay is also very good. Paul Brickman's direction has a sort of artistic feeling to it (he also scripted); he has a unique way of creating a film that's funny, erotic, and occasionally suspenseful.

Another wonderful aspect of the film is its terrific soundtrack. It features rockin' songs from such popular artists as The Police, Bob Seger, Talking Heads, Muddy Waters, Phil Collins, and Prince. It also features new music by the hit-making band Tangerine Dream, whose techno, futuristic-sounding score gives the movie an occasionally nightmarish, occasionally unpleasant mood to it - and, of course, the film is about every teenager's nightmares come true.

All in all, RISKY BUSINESS is essential viewing from the 1980's, and it works just as well now as it did then. Tom Cruise's first hit, a terrific soundtrack, and a cult classic - this is RISKY BUSINESS.

Summary: Risky? Yes, Good? Maybe
Review: The early 80's are known for their hokey-yet-classic teen movies. Of these, "Risky Business" has the most original plot and the most accurate representation of teenagers yet it still falls flat.

Known more for pre-scrubby Tom Cruise dancing in his ... than for its plot, the story revolves around a dorky high schooler (Cruise) who becomes a lot more "worldly" due to his week with a prostitute (eventually turning his own home into a ...). The point of this film should be enjoyment, except it's really not all that much fun to watch Cruise make mistake after mistake. More humor would have done this film some good because it shouldn't expect to be an Oscar-winner. In addition, the movie is rather gratuitous, becoming a tame ... at parts.

But still the film does have its strongpoints. Watching a pre-cool Cruise is amusing (How old was he in this film?). The film does move briskly along with an interesting plotline. It's not your typical gross-out teen movie either, a teen movie that actually has depth. But perhaps this depth is a little too much and the fun a little too light because "Risky Business" still comes in as a very average (and forgettable) film indeed.

Summary: STILL HOLDS UP VERY WELL
Review: The film is still very, very funny. No need to go into plot because you can read all about it in other reviews. The premise is, of course, very much like "Home Alone", but of course, the kid is older, and perhaps less intelligent. Were kids in the 1980's really this stupid? At any rate, Tom Cruise, younger and somewhat plumper, manages to make the film the success it is. The supporting cast is fine and the film still makes a good watch for those who are interested.
