Summary: Subversive and groundbreaking
Review: I may be the only one in the nothern hemisphere not to have seen this one until today.... I picked this one out just for the fun of seeing a movie that everybody had seen twelve times and that features a was-he-ever-that-young? Tom Cruise.
What a surprise ! While I was waiting at best for yet another spoiled movie about rich kids in suburbian Chicago, I just had discovered the film that summarized the whole 80's ! The screenplay has to be one of the most brilliant I had even seen, and the subtext is as ambiguous and subversive that I have ever seen one.
The story epitomized the whole money-grabbing, sex-addicted 80's era, probably even anticipating on the evolution of this era. It is absolutely essential that movies can be read on different levels. This one figures a nice kids-fool-parents first level, but on the second level, the movie tells us about how the failure of the american dream and how it is now summarized by Sex, Money and Sex gets Money values.
The money could be seen as a ground for other movies like American Beauty to build on as it laid down the basis of the suburbian life crisis in a way few movies had made before.
One liners like "Trust is a four letter word" are priceless and play again twenty years after.
An essential movie.

Summary: One of the worst movies that I've ever seen!
Review: I sometimes think that I'm the only person in the world that hates this film, but I detest it thoroughly. I had no idea what I was in for when I saw it during its theatrical run. One of my main objections is that the film minimizes, if not glamorizes, the impacts of prostitution. Prostitution is a very ugly, exploitative scene in real life, not the lighthearted fun that the film portrays. Not the best moral message, to be sure.
Aside from that, the other problem I have is with the characters. EVERYONE is a jerk in this movie. Nobody is appealing or likeable. Not even Cruise's Joel, who I found to be as much of a self-centered @#$%&*/ as everyone else. Unfortunately, he followed up by playing the same kind of obnoxious characters ("Top Gun", "Days of Thunder"). It took "Jerry Maguire" and "Rain Man" for me to gain any respect for him.
Anyway, the combination of a creepy, amoral theme and obnoxious characters in what is supposed to be a comedy is a total turn-off. Keep the kids away!

Summary: Great movie - Poor DVD
Review: I think most people who buy/rent this DVD have already seen the movie and know what they're getting. There are a lot of good reviews on this movie here at amazon.com but I only saw one that mentioned the quality of the DVD. It is absolutely horrible. The companies who produce these dark, grainy DVDs need to know that the consumers aren't going to accept this type of low-quality transfer. I'd gladly pay a bit more money for a DVD that's viewable. We know how good movies can look on DVD. So why release a disc that looks as poor as this one? As consumers we need to demand better! Just as VHS movies recorded in SLP or EP were unacceptable, so are DVDs that look as bad as this Risky Business disc.

Summary: Sometimes you just have to say what the heck
Review: I thought it was a terrific movie. I felt like I had every one of Cruise's phobia's when I was his age. And when he's frantic to get out of class and the clock somehow goes back a minute--I've been there, too. Besides Cruise's charm, Curtis Armstrong is funny as his friend who worries about his midterm while being chased by Guido, the killer pimp. I lived in Chicago then and a photographer friend told me that the hookers at the party were Chicago fashion models. One of the models was Candace Collins, who did some work for Playboy before an interviewer asked her if it was sexist and she answered yes. Then the magazine dropped her like a rock.

Review: If you ever wonder how Tom Cruise became famous - start here. This is a cute and funny story about a teenage boy, who left home alone by trusting parents, decides to explore his entry into adulthood. Along the way, he encounters a problem or two...which grows out of control. The fun is watching him trying to resolve the problem as he gets deeper and deeper in trouble...........and closer and closer to Mommy and Daddy returning home. A Feris Buellers Day Off Tom Cruise Style.You know what....I miss this Tom.

Review: If you want to see a good comedy, skip American Pie, Scary Movie, (...) and watch this. This, I think, isn't even a teen movie. Some parts my seem like it, but I think this movie is for teens AND adults. Anyway, the acting is great, story is great, and the movie itself is great!

Summary: Teen comedy
Review: It's hard to believe teen comedies were actually good once. I just saw this movie for the first time and I found it entertaining. Tom Cruise plays a teen who gets in way over his head with hookers and pimps. He was a lot younger when he made this and his acting is pretty weak but this movie is a good way to pass some time. I liked it.

Summary: A very adult teen comedy
Review: Joel Goodson (Tom Cruise) is a high school senior who is already half-way to an ulcer from anxiety about future success. He stresses about his SAT scores, his performance as a Future Enterpriser, and getting into a good college. His friends urge him to lighten up; he tries to do so while his parents are away on a trip, and the result is a life-changing experience for him. This is not only a very funny film, but it is also very insightful and subversive about the get-ahead-quick, materialistic mentality that lies behind the kind of uber-businessmen that began coming up in the 80s and have enriched all of our lives so much with shenanigans such as the Enron debacle. Cruise's character goes from an innocent kid who believes that the key to success is hard work and preparation to one who realizes that a clever opportunist with a smooth line of BS is the one who will really come out at the head of the pack. Excellent work from the supporting cast as well as writer/director Paul Brickman.
