Summary: An incredibly funny and entertaining movie.
Review: The story is of Stanley, a bank officer, a 'nice guy' who always finishes last. At the lowest point of his desperation, he gets hold of the Mask, and with it, he becomes the Norse god of mischief. It allows him to do what ever he wanted to do with immunity. He finds an out let for his repressed angers (against the Car mechanics) and desires (to be with Cameroon). But the story takes a turn when the 'masked' Stanley runs up against some bank robbers and beats them to the loot....

I bought the DVD 5 years after I had first seen the movie at the theatre. I had a lot of fun watching it at the theatre, but I felt that watching it on DVD was even better. The masked version of Stanley (Jim Carrey) is almost cartoonish and brings out the inner most desires of Stanley (whose version of a good evening was to watch cartoons). The movie does bring out Carrey's best talents, and even more amazing was his and Cameroon Diaz's dance (which was not their talent before the movie). The part I love best is the 'Rumba beat' dance and when Stanley's dog gets hold of the mask.

The DVD has the director's commentary and some deleted scenes. The commentary does help in appreciating the effort that went behind the scenes, and having the DVD allows you to look scene by scene at the amazing amount of things that happen to the Masked characters in a short period, you get to look at some scenes carefully which you might have missed while watching it at a theatre.

The director hinted at a possible sequel to the Mask and I am still awaiting it! I am sure it's gonna be as 'Smokinn..' as this one.

Summary: Hello, Cameron Diaz And A Job Well Done Mr. Carrey
Review: I must say that after watching such films as ,She's The One, and others starring Cameron Diaz I was not entirely impressed with her portfolio but when I got this DVD and gave it a quick viewing I must say I was(cough, cough) wholeheartily impressed with her performance. Okay, aside from watching this movie in that Music Television sort of way that totally discounts any of the other action going on other than the beautiful women being creatively(yet tastefully, yeah right) photographed I actually found this flick to be very appealing. I really don't know whether to call ,The Mask, a musical comedy, a romantic comedy, or a fantasy but I'm sure it's a bit of each. This is certainly a movie that showed Jim Carrey to be a good addition to the cast. His cartoonish comedy fit the role of a man with a love of cartoons very well, or should I say,"Like a glove."(I'll apologize in advance for the quote from Ace Ventura Pet Detective)The singing scenes were great. I have to admit I laughed a lot particularily during the scene with the cops instead of arresting Stanley Ipkus(How the hell do you spell that name?)they sang and danced to the "Cuban Pete" song. The other singing scene in the Coco Bongo with Carrey and Diaz dancing was not to shabby either. Ipkus's buddy Charlie was funny in a corny kind of way. His line about always wanting to say I believe it was take them away boys or something to that effect added to the cheese factor(Hey, I like cheese) The actors who played the officer and the sidekick in pursuit of the man in the green mask(AKA Ipkus) were very funny and the joke about the impossible pajamas was witty to say the least. The cameo by Ben Stein of Win Ben Stein's Money and Ferris Bueller's Day Off was also well placed. You know, the villain had a very Eric Roberts like aura about him.(Naturally, I didn't like him) So ,The Mask, is for anyone who deep down inside is a love crazed fiend with or without a really bad set of pajamas.(And of course a green mask of the night god Loki) The Mask is certainly worth a look, maybe even two.(hundred?)

Summary: "I gotta lay off the cartoons."
Review: This is one of my favorite Jim Carrey performances, mainly because the character he plays is so over-the-top that it fits his personality and excessive style of comedy perfectly. I've read the Dark Horse comics of "The Mask" and the one thing that is missing in the film is the gore. The crazy situations instead take on a Looney-Toons flavor with fantastic visual effects and insanely fun sequences. The dance number "Cuban Pete" is so ridiculous that it's entertaining, while the darker scenes are tempered by hilarious antics from Jim Carrey. This film is ridiculous fun!

Summary: Fun special effects chalked full of energy!!!
Review: As a somewhat cautious viewer of in-your-face comedy I was a bit surprised by the level of enjoyment found in "The Mask". Jim Carrey's explosive energy works well as a zoot-suited Tex Avery cartoon character -- he stops at nothing when donning the ancient green mask. Unfortunately though, these times happen to be amoung the only few highlights of the film. There is not much in the way of plot or character development. The special effects that are used when the Mask is on screen are phenomanol, and are alone worth watching the film for. But if you're looking for more, check out the great soundtrack that accompanies the visual effects. Carrey's rendition of "Cuban Pete" is hilarious and with the revival of swing music, be sure not to miss the performance by Royal Crown Revue. It's smooookin!! Fans of Cameron Diaz will find her movie debut as Tina Carlyle, a sultry nightclub singer, the first in a long line of amazing performances. Another supporting character worth mentioning is Milo the dog, Carrey's nemesis. Whenever on camera, he steals the scene. (For a spectacular special effect check out Milo near the end). If your're looking for a fun, energy packed film without too much complication, you'll be sure to enjoy "The Mask". If your're not a big fan of Carrey's humor you may want to skip this one, but be assured, it's much easier to swallow than "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective". END

Summary: FUNNIEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME!!
Review: rotflmfao I still am laughing so hard watching this movie even a full decade after it was first released. Jim Carrey never fails to put a laugh in the entire family living room. I just can't get enough of this film even today. Go and buy it! You won't be dissapointed!

Summary: What happened to "widescreen?"
Review: I wish this video would've been widescreen. I do so hate the pan-and-scan, but for this movie it works well. Jim Carrey, you gotta love him for all the effortless feats he performs in this film. As shy banker Stanley Ipkis he is a gem, and even more remarkable when he acquires The Mask. I am a recent fan of his, and have been seeing his movies that I missed. This one is the definitive funny man and the story isn't half bad either. I loved Cuban Pete. Even the neurotic Stanley who visits a popshrink of a book about masks people wear reminded me so much of a typical Carrey action. A must see for all Carrey fans!

Summary: Unnecessary bits ruin an otherwise charming film
Review: There's a reason why this movie isn't shown on TV. While Jim Carrey is very funny, and hits all the right notes in this Jekyll-and-Hyde story of a shy, sweet banker who turns into a super-powered, mischievously cartoonish caricature when he dons an ancient Norse mask, there are parts of this that are ghastly, overly graphic, and totally unhumorous. For example, early on in the film, "masked" Stanley *robs a bank.* My son was completely confused as to why the good guy is doing the same thing the bad guys must be stopped for. Is it OK for Stanley to rob the bank because he's angry at the way the management treated him? Or because he's funnier and more colorful than the bad guys? What on earth was the movie trying to say here?

To make things worse, during one of his sprees as The Mask, Stanley returns to the dishonest car mechanic that dealt badly with him in an earlier sequence in the film, and SODOMIZES HIM ANALLY WITH AN OBJECT. The man is seen being wheeled out of his car shop after having been sexually assaulted by The Mask in this way. It's grotesque and offputting, and it certainly wasn't funny. I found myself sympathizing with "regular" Stanley and glad at the outcome, but "masked" Stanley was no superhero, and I'd caution any parent who thinks this is a kid-friendly movie to think twice.

Summary: Impressions
Review: You know, to tell you the truth this is the funniest film I have ever seen. I could hardly help laughing . I wonder why it is not shown on TV . It would be great to see it again, after many years. Why not?

Summary: One of the best comedies from the funniest guy in Hollywood
Review: Ace Ventura: Pet Detective was really the movie that put Jim Carrey on the map. The Mask is the movie that solidified his position as the funniest guy in Hollywood.

In The Mask Carrey plays Stanley Ipkiss the nice guy who always finishes last. He gets a hold of a mask that once he wears it his innermost desires come to life. Will Stanley let the mask rule his life or will he realize he's great just the way he is. You'll just have to watch the movie to find out.

Jim Carrey gave an awesome performance in this movie. He was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a musical or comedy. He didn't win it, but his performance was definetly good enough to have one it. Ipkiss is in no way Ace Ventura. He isn't the confident wild man that Ace is. He's the nice guy that finishes last that everyone likes. Carrey plays it to perfection. Once the Mask is put on Carrey becomes that wild man that we love so much and thats where the movie really excels. The animation they used for Ipkiss with the mask on is great and Carrey plays the wild man better than anyone ever. He sings, dances, and throws out some of the best one liners ever. Stanley Ipkiss is a great character and thanks to Jim Carrey for making him that.

Cameron Diaz is great in the film. This was the movie that introduced us to the formere model. She holds her own real well in the movie. Carrey was so hot when he did this movie riding the success of Pet Detective and she shines in this role. She is absolutely gorgeous throughout the whole film. She's not a bad actress and I really wish she'd do more roles like this.

The extras on the DVD are decent. There are some deleted scenes that are alright and the directors commentary is decent as well. The movie can be viewed in full or widescreen format and it features dolby digital sound. I wish they'd done some more with the special features though. They could have done something cool with the music or special effects, but they didn't.

The music is great in this film. I have the soundtrack as well and the music helps make this film great. Jim Carrey is great when he dances and sings in "Cuban Pete." There are some great swing songs like Royal Crown Revues "Hey Pachuco played in the movie. This really could be considered a musical in many ways.

This is a fantastic film. It's fun the whole familiy can relate to and is a must own. The DVD is pretty easy to find cheap, so don't miss out on this fun film.
