Summary: A Scot writes...
Review: Cultural stereotypes usually grieve the hell out of me, but those found in this film are so charming (both of the Scottish and of the Americans) that I can forgive mr. Forsyth.

Everything about this film is perfect: the characters, the setting, the photography, the music.

If you don't come away with an overwhelming desire to swap places with Mac and throw it all in to live in the Highlands, I'm afraid you've missed the point!

In this age of soul-less automation, materialism and indifference to our fellow man, here's a gem which will make you weep for joy.

Summary: Simply the Best
Review: I thought no one but myself had ever heard of this film and now I find there is a cult! This has long been one of my favorite movies of all time, for it's wit, humor and heart. I watch it countless times and never get tired of it. It is a little too subtle for some, but they are idiots. We know the truth.

Summary: Timeless.
Review: Add another 5 star rating. I have seen this movie more than 10 times over the years. It has not aged at all.

Summary: A gem that reminds us of the important things in life
Review: Add another 5-star rating to the chorus of those in love and in awe with this film. From the exuberant bluster of Burt Lancaster to the perfect middle management mix of self-doubt and self-confidence of Peter Reigert to the seeming authenticity (I can only guess never having been to Scotland) of the villagers to the beauty of the cinematography to the perfect soundtrack, this film is a masterpiece. It is tempting to call it a small masterpiece, but that would be wrong. The themes dealt with in this film, the import of community, friends, love and the beauty of the natural world contrasted against the emptiness of achievement without those things, are every bit as important and resonant as many of the "important" message films that get so much hype around Academy Award time. The pitch is so perfect that I can watch it year after year and only grow fonder of Gordon, Mac, Happer, Victor, Stella and the others. As I write this, I can hear the sounds of the kaelie (sp?) flowing through my head. See this movie, and add your voice to the chorus.

Summary: Great movie...
Review: This is the only movie that I have paid twice to see while it was playing in the theatre. I was even a poor starving college student at the time. Simply put, see this movie. By the way, the soundtrack by Mark Knopfler is awesome.

Summary: Masterpiece, classic, wonderful, charming, great...
Review: You get the picture. If you read all the reviews here, you have an idea why people think this movie is such a great film.

It is my favorite movie of all-time, and I am a BIG movie buff. I watch it at least once a year, more like twice. I finally bought the video, watched it again just last night, and it still surprises me how perfect it is. Plotting, pace, dialog, characters, music, scenery, humor, charm, the ending...there is not a missed step at all.

This is how all movies should be made.

Summary: The ONLY movie I watch monthly
Review: This movie is the only movie I own that I watch monthly. It became my favorite movie a dozen years ago and I am on my fifth copy because I wear them out so much. This movie is about a man who discovers that there is more to life than money. That some of the best things in life are simple. Or are natural and need to be left alone. That sometimes what we are looking for is right before our eyes if only we are willing to open our eyes to the wonder of life and stop making life such a complicated journey. It is also a movie that shows that American ways are not always the best ways and that what one man in Texas does can or could effect the lives of many people on the coast of Scotland. That the saying like think global, act local should be adhered to more.

Summary: Add this to your collection!
Review: I first saw this movie over 10 years ago, and have never been able to forget it. I watched it several times, then, a couple years later, several more times, then, a couple years later, etc. Now I am finally buying it for my collection- because it is something I will be wanting to watch when I'm 90. You will never see a more perfectly scripted, acted, scored, balanced, heart-wrenching and heart-warming movie. Every character resonates, every scene entices and reveals, the little things become large, and the large things small. There is no other film like it- likely, there will not be.

Summary: CAN I GIVE IT SIX STARS?
Review: This understated little movie is a miracle. Having seen it many times , it's humor and joy are unique. Mark Knopfler's wonderful soundtrack is marvelously effective . "Local Hero" invigorates the soul with a playful, wistful humanity like no film I've ever seen. Not just one of the best comedies ever made, it's one of the very few perfect films ever made.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: This movie is "Spot On" - One of the best I've ever seen.
Review: Local Hero is one of my favorite movies. It is a very subtle and exceedingly funny look at people and cultures. Being an American and having spent some time in the West of Ireland and in rural UK I think the movie really captures how the different cultures characterize each other. It's a look at how close we really are.

The dessert to top off this feast is the Mark Knopfler film score, the music glides you though this film.

I've purchased it for my self and may friends all have loved it !
