Summary: "Fear and Loathing" is a godsend
Review: Terry Gillaim the master of film that brought you "Brazil" and "Twelve Monkeys" has done it again in this retelling of the cult classic by Hunter S. Thompson, a god of Gonzo journalism. With vivid photography and amazing special effects, the movie blows your mind with off-beat antics. Plus the cast does a superb job! FIVE STARS!!!!!

Summary: You almost have to be a Monty Python Fan to love this!
Review: I loved this cartoonesque "romp" through the dessert that could only happen with the talents of the same man who drew Monty Python's Flying Circus cartoons. Jonny Depp will have you snickering and giggling in this no holds barred slice of a very different life film. This movie is a joke, but it can laugh at itself, and often does. You need to be a Python fan to get the full effect.

Summary: Understanding is the key
Review: Yes,this is a love it or hate it film. Yes, this is a repulsively visual film. Yes, it is sporadic and eposodic in narrative in structure. And yes, this is a highly intellectual and brilliant film. "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" is a film for thos who saw and understood Oliver Stone's "Natural Born Killers". "Fear and Loathing" has the same impacting message a the absurdity of the American dream and those who will chase after it at any cost by any means necessary. Many complaints have been "love the book, hate the movie". What I don't understand is that thses people don't seem to realize that the film IS the book. I don't think I've ever seen such a faithfull adaptation. And by being a visual experience, another level was added to Thompson's work. That feeling of the viewer along for the ride with Duke and Gonzo, seeing their misadventures, laughing when they did, but feeling guilty for accepting them as antiheros. Ellen Barkin's scene in the diner pulls the pain of pursuit of pleasure regardless of feelings in full, agonizing perspective. Depp, belonging to my holy trinity of acting (also including Kevin Spacey and Jack Lemmon), again shows his cameleon-like quality as ac actor to make the audience believe what he shows us on screen. And Del Toro, as Dr. Gonzo shows a terrific range in his flawless representation of the "cruel samoin". Both actors do a marvelous physical transformation as weel. That in itself, is true dedication to their work. "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" is bound to be seen and misunderstood by those who see it as merely a comedy of no rules and no consequences. But they would be missing the true purpose of the film and the book itself. the American dream is just that - a dream. In our vain efforts to make it a reality, we run the risk of inducing ourselves into a frenzy of noncaring, irresponsible, and wreckless people. Duke and Gonzo are prototypes of the living american dream - doing what they want without accepting the consequence. That is what is at the heart of the so-called American dream. In watching the movie or reading the book, we the audience see the futility of their search, much the same way Becket explored the adsurdity in "Waiting For Godot" Finally, the movie is hilarious in its own hallucinigenic way.the visual a amazing and the production is wonderful. So for those of you not sure how to approach the film, go to be entertained and surrender to the lucid absurdity of the movie. For those looking for a little insight on how we live our lives - buy the ticket, take the ride.

Summary: Exceptional, completely and utterly amazing
Review: You know what? I am sick and tired of hearing people trash this movie. They just don't get it. Terry Gilliam does a superb job as the director of this warped road trip, and Johhny Depp gives the performance of the decade as Thompson. And Benicio Del Toro is unforgettable as the overweight Dr.Gonzo. This movie is groundbreaking in the same way that A Clockwork Orange was. SEE THIS MOVIE.

Summary: I didn't know they allowed home-video viewings in Wisconsin.
Review: Honest to God, boys and girls, I thought all they allowed in that fine, vast state were ritual lynchings and burrito stands... Glad I've been proven wrong... Oh, yeah, the movie... One of the most visually stunning films I've ever seen... Depp is absolutely majestic as the Good Doctor, and Benicio both sickened and sexually aroused me as Dr. Gonzo... The first twenty minutes of the film are undeniably the best, an uncontrollable rollercoaster ride straight to Hell and back with nothing to hold onto except a half-empty beer can and the back of my attorney's neck... See it ten, twenty, thirty times and then realize that too many viewings will never be enough...

OK,

Summary: "When the going gets weird the weird turn pro!"
Review: I laughed so hard that I coughed up chunks of blood. Not only did Terry Gilliam succeed in creating a film that was totally Gonzo, but created on-screen visuals just like the book illustrations of Ralph Steadman. The film uncoveredas much of the mad mess from the hilariously dangerous book. Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro performed magnificently as HST and "The Brown Buffalo". Tobey Maguire as the "hitchhiker" was believably hilarious also. Cristina Ricci as "Lucy" and Gary Busey as the "Policeman" lent the movie a further strangeness. The scene when the deskwoman's face stretched out, it was paying homage to Gilliam's other film Brazil, the actress in both is his mother. In the drinking lounge, we spy several cameo appearences of the monster himself. The madman can be seen with a sunvisor with a Dunhill stuffed in his cigarrette holder. I give this film 5 stars, 2 bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, 5 sheets of high powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half-full of cocaine and a whole galaxy of multicolored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers...also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of budweiser, a pint of raw ether, and two-dozen amyls.

Summary: One of the most warped films I have ever seen: very original
Review: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is not just a movie...it's an experience. "What's it like to be on drugs," you ask. Terry Gilliam shows us. The words of Hunter S. Thompson's novel about the quest for the "American dream" come to life on the screen with psycadelic humor and realism. Not just a adaptation to Thompson's tale, but a tribute. True, this film is not for everyone...some may even find it too bizarre. But maybe that's the problem with Hollywood these days. We've become too comfortable with films recently...we need a lot more Fear and Loathing on our screens and in our lives. Watch and enjoy...feed your head.
