Summary: Witchy Women....
Review: When a witch curses herself she in fact curses all her decendants in that the man that loves them will die. The witches are portrayed in a more humorous way, yet the two sisters do kill a man by "accident" when he turns violent.

There are some scenes of possession which make this perfect for October viewing. ;> It is not that scary, but just scary enough.

While most Wiccans tell me they don't believe in the Devil, I have to say that if you don't believe in God, then you might be on the other side.

So, with that said, I still watched this movie because it did look rather harmless and was more of a fantasy like the movie Chocolat. If you think witches are evil, this might make you feel more kindly towards them, but then again...not all witches are this friendly. One sister seems more on the dark side than the other.

I think playing with the spirit world is not advised, but the "witchy" bonding nature of women is what this movie focuses on more. One could say: Witches just wanna have fun in this movie, but keep getting into trouble.

The soundtrack is nice and the characters are pleasant. Nothing too scary and the story line is easy to follow.

If you like the TV series Bewitched, this movie portrays the women in the same "good light."

Not advised for those who are highly sensitive to other religions, but might be fun for those who are a bit
more open-minded about their viewing, even if it
goes against everything they believe in.

If you like this movie, you will love Chocolat.

Summary: Great movie, great actresses, wonderful story
Review: I read the book this movie was based on several years ago and totally loved it so I was really excited to see they had made a movie out of it, and like the icing on the cake, featuring one of my favorite actresses, Sandra Bullock!

This movie is sort of a love commedy, very unusual though. One of the things I liked best about his movie is the viewpoint that you should not judge things without knowing them and that you should not judge people because they don't have your same religious beliefs. It will amuse you, touch you and make you think.

Summary: A truly bubbly brew.
Review: I love the book by Alice Hoffman and I was interested to see what the film was like compared to the book so I went to see it and absolutely loved it. The film follows the lives of a family of female witches. Ok so it's not always believable, and neither is the storyline always quite on the straight and narrow but it's good, quirky fun. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are brilliant as sisters Sally and Gillian and their duo really carries this film. All the side characters are on fine form, especially Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest as the Aunts. Overall a really enjoyable, magical and bubbly brew. Not to be missed :)

Summary: A magic brew of sentementality
Review: A sickly sweet tale of witchery or a whimsical take on love? How much you enjoy this movie probably depends as much on how you feel about the stars as about the subject. Nicole Kidman is great as the wild one and Sandra Bullock perfect as the romantic dreamer. Dianne Weist and stockard Channing are scene stealers as the two aunts who embrace being a witch. The story follows two witch sisters as they have very different experiences in love and relationships. Aidan Quinn and Goran Visjnic supply the male interest even though both have little to do and do very little with it. But that doesn't matter as this film really belongs to the women, including the little girls playing Bullock's daughters. A tale of true love, curses and possesion this is quite a unique film in all it's elements and as such deserves to be watched. Many may be turned off by the subject but this film does have may things to offer. But be warned if you don't have a sweet tooth it's probably best to avoid it. If you are a Sandra Bullock or Nicole Kidman fan then you will probably be captivated.

Summary: VERY underrated movie! A must see!
Review: I bought this movie after it came out and pop it in every couple of months. "Practical Magic" is a wonderful, have-fun movie that is just right as a Halloween movie for any age (save maybe very, very young viewers.) I know because every Halloween party I've had, this movie has delighted my guests.

Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are wonderful as two sisters in this movie. Their on-screen chemistry is amazing. You can't help but smile as they joke with each other and interact because it reminds you of how you were with a close sibling or how you wish you could be with one.

Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest are amazing. As supporting actresses, they almost steal the show as they are described as the aunts who are "sugar and spice" by the director, Griffin Dunne.

The story is about two sisters who are very close who live with their aunts in what I assume is a New England town. They have the reputation of being "witches" who curse any man who dares love an Owens woman. Of course, Gillian (Nicole Kidman) and Sally (Sandra Bullock) get into a bit of trouble as Gillian's evil boyfriend Jimmy (Goran Visnjic) accidently ends up dead at their hands through self-defense that can be deemed suspicious by anyone else and they try to figure out a way to cover it up. Things get stickier when the Officer Hallet (Adian Quinn) shows up to find the wanted Jimmy and sparks fly between Sally and Officer Hallet. Do they try to send him away and risk Sally losing her one true love? Or do they let him stay and risk Gillian and Sally getting caught while Jimmy's ghost continues to torment Gillian?

This movie is based on a third of Alice Hoffman's wonderful book by the same name. For those of you who have seen the movie (spoiler alert) and are curious about the book, you won't be disappointed. Remember the woman that wished to take another woman's husband? Well, you get to find out what happens to her as well as the adventures that Sally's daughters get into as they grow up. In other words, the book is better than the movie, but the movie is just as fun as the book.

As for those of you who like DVDs and their extra features, it is chock-full of them. From the game of "find the ingredients to mix the love potion" you have to search through the various features in the DVD to click on "ingredients" and get clues as to mixing the love potion which opens up a whole behind-the-scenes featurette. It also contains trailers, bios, and other little tidbits that were artistically designed well and accompanied by wonderful little chimes and music.

This "witch" movie is not quite as dark as "the Craft" (or ridiculous for that matter) as not as sex-filled as "Witches of Eastwick" but genuinely wholesome, fun and delightful. Especially the "Midnight Margaritas" scene which will have you humming the tune for days. A good recommendation for a Halloween movie for most ages.

Summary: Magickal, Romantic Comedy for Everyone (Including Guys!)
Review: Obviously, this movie is a "Chick Flick" & "Romantic Comedy." So, your wife / girlfriend / consort, or "significant other" must twist your arm to get you to put the Action-Adventure movie down and stick this one in the VCR/DVD player, right? WRONG. This movie is Fun, Sexy, Magickal...and the Male Hero is a Texas Ranger! So stop whining about wanting to watch Mel Gibson's latest movie or Arnold Schwarzenegger's latest flick and Cuddle-Up with your "significant other" for a new kind of Adventure.... There is even an "Evil Bad Guy" in this movie (betcha didn't think you'd see much "Action," huh? Well...get ready for a surprisingly fast-paced "Chick Flick.") You'll be singin' the "Midnight Marguerita" song and dancin' around with her broom, before the evening is over! My "significant other" is a Wiccan / Actress / Ex-Librarian, so she prefers the Book (wich she says is written very Poetically) to the movie.... But, we had a lot of Fun watching the film, together. I recommend this movie to everyone, Including Guys!

Summary: Best chick flick - but still a chick flick, so...
Review: I usually hate chick flicks and all the sappy, schmaltzy GirlPower! themes that go along with them, but I really enjoyed Practical Magic even though it has ALL of the above. It's a no-brainer feel good movie that gets a lot of mileage out of the Lilith Fair soundtrack and beautiful sets/settings. The book, however, is much, MUCH better, and I do recommend that wholeheartedly.
