Summary: Let The Sunshine In
Review: A sitcom for sophisticates who never leave their plush neighborhoods -- it has a certain wheezy charm. Nora and Delia Ephron haul out an old cinematic chestnut, Lubitsch's "Shop Around the Corner", primp it up with contemporary dialogue and personality types (they're not characters), and whip it into a light froth. This film frappacino might be more enjoyable if the Ephron sisters weren't continually forcing us to drink it down in big gulps. They're so taken with Meg Ryan's fluttery eyes and gamin smile that they forgot to provide her with a character. It's a rather condescending performance -- she's giving us what she thinks we want by coasting on her charm. Tom Hanks is better as the head of the corporate book chain that drives her independent store out of business. He doesn't make the character all nicey-nicey - his Joe Fox is arrogant and allows her store to fold even after he's fallen in love with her. Yet, like Ryan, his performance becomes a bit condescending as well. Since Ephron & Ephron really haven't given them roles that take them anywhere new, both actors rely on our affection for them to carry this picture through -- they have politely agreed to play the old act again for our benefit.

The film isn't hard to take though. It bounces along pleasantly like a stroll through a familiar neighborhood and the writing, while not nearly as witty as the Ephron sisters seem to think it is, isn't embarassing either. Yet, "You've Got Mail" really demonstrates how insulated Ephron & Ephron's sunshiney Upper West Side world actually is. We're encouraged to think that doe-eyed Meg's loss of her little book store to the large chain is no big deal and that she gets corporate honco Tom Hanks as compensation. If only all small booksellers could be so lucky! Maybe this unreality is necessary for romantic comedy but in an era where corporations have ruthlessly squeezed out or swallowed up small businesses of all sorts, "You've Got Mail" ends on a particularly callous note: if you can't beat 'em, bed 'em.

Summary: THE BEST ROMANTIC COMEDY OF THE YEAR
Review: I thought that this movie was absolutely wonderful. Sure, it manipulated my emotions--and I loved every minute of it. This movie makes you want to fall in love, move to New York, open a bookstore, (Not in that order). Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks were wonderful, as usual. The story moves along quite breezily, and the characters are well acted and well defined. There was very little objectionable material in this film (a little cussing) which make it perfect for a mother-daughter (or father-daughter) togetherness time. You need this movie. Who doesn't want a little romance in their life?

Summary: SLEEPLESS IN SEATLLE MEETS AOL...
Review: Besides that fact that this a two-hour non-stop commercial for America Online, Meg & Tom give one of the freshest perfomances in recent romantic comedies. They bring back some of that good time we all had watching SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE. Meg and Tom are both perfect for this. I've enjoyed YOU'VE GOT MAIL, because it's story-line isn't too unrealistic for the 90's, it has a witty script and a fantastic choice of music. But really - what else would you expect from a team (Noah Ephron of Harry & Sally fame!) like this?!

Summary: Loved it!
Review: I absolutley loved this movie. My boyfriend, who does not usually like "chick flicks" liked it as well. Meg and Tom are so great together, that you think they could be a "real life couple". It is one of my favorite movies that has been out in a LONG time, next to "Stepmom". Go see it if you have not already.

Summary: Rent This and Buy the Original Instead -- Really
Review: Are amazon.com viewers this undiscriminating to give this film such high marks? It's a pleasant enough film, primarily because of the ongoing chemistry between Hanks and Ryan, but it's so so predictable (and all of the other characters are absolute ciphers). While there are a lot of good DVD features on the disc, I'm relieved I rented this and did not purchase. If you haven't seen the original and totally wonderful "Shop Around the Corner," do yourself a favor and get it instead. In it, Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullivan create complicated, funny, cruel, wonderful characters. And as for the box for the DVD, would studios please stop airbrushing the actors to death? Tom Hanks looks like a plastic mannequin.

Summary: It's like a sunny sunday morning
Review: When the film started it sent the first signals of a great time that would be spent during watching it.Especially nowadays,as the use of computers and internet increase so fastly,it was like a tail which became true. The film gives happines of having a sunny sunday morning. You feel very close to the players and that feeling makes you a part of the film.I believe that this is a very important skill for a movie.Because everyone who goes to theatre to watch the movie may not have the formation of a critic and naturally they will approach to the things they watch with an emotional way. I'm not a critic but I can say that they act their roles so sensitive that you feel you should take one side, the little bookstore or the big one. As you are living the theatre you ask a question to yourself:There can be really such relations around us and WHY DO NOT SUCH THINGS HAPPEN TO US? After all the movie and the players give a huge smile as a gift when the lights are turned off.

Summary: Not up to snuff
Review: I think people are so anxious to put Tom Hanks and Meg ryan in ANYTHING together, that it doesn't matter to them if the movie is actually good. If you want to see a good Hanks/Ryan movie, rent Sleepless in Seattle.
