Summary: Royal Tenenbaums is a royal treat
Review: "The Royal Tenenbaums" has got to be the most clever film that I have seen this year. I loved every second of it. The cast in this film is extraordinary and they all did a great job. Top honors should go to Co-writer Owen Wilson And Co-writer/director Wes Anderson because they have put together a film that is completely original, funny and moving at the same time. There are parts in this film where the humor is really straight forward and it just sort of hits you, and at some points you almost don't know if you should laugh. That is kind of what I liked most about this film. It has unexpected scenes of humor in it that you just don't expect. Although, If you have seen "Bottle Rocket" or "Rushmore", this film is along those lines, except it is much better than both of those films. This is surely one of my favorite films of the year.

Summary: Lacking
Review: This movie is so goofy, that the talents of the cast are wasted. Billed as a comedy, but the movie came across as a "Stoner Feature", in my opinion. To me, the moment of greatest comedy was when Danny Glover fell into a hole. Gwynth Paltrow's character drained me, with her pouting, depressed manner. Also billed as a family of geniuses, I found nothing mentally stimulating about this movie. This is a silly, but colorful children's story. A spoof of life. Great, if you enjoy that sort of thing. I was expecting more.

Summary: Not Light Humor
Review: My experience with this interesting film was marred by my expectations for a movie of great humor. The adjectives "hilarious" and "lots of laughs" do not apply. It is absurd and it is dark humor. I would probably have enjoyed it more if I hadn't been expecting a comedy. I hope to spare other readers my disappointment of what this is not, so they can better enjoy this movie for what it is -- well-made and rich in the ironies and quirks of the human experience.

Summary: The Royal YAWN
Review: What a great cast, but still, I just don't get the point. Half way into this movie, I was wondering, "Surely this can't be it. This has to get better." It didn't. I stayed for every agonizing moment. There were some people laughing during this alledged "Comedy" but glancing around, I noticed more confused people like myself! Outside the theater I heard both reveiws. Some loved it.(Mostly the very young) Some hated it. Here is my suggestion: Save the...[money] and buy some batteries for your flashlight. Make interesting shadow puppets on the wall.

Summary: Too much talent for a very boring movie.
Review: With such a great line up of wonderful, talented stars it was the most boring and laughless comedy I had the misfortune of paying to see.

Summary: My Favorite Movie this Year
Review: I am a huge fan of Wes Anderson's other films, especially Rushmore, so I was really excited to see The Royal Tenenbaums. I was surprised that it actually exceeded my expectations. I think I liked it better than Rushmore, which is saying a lot!

The performances are excellent. Gene Hackman virtually steals the show as the absentee patriarch. He has been a jerk so long that he doesn't even realize that much of what he says and does is downright cruel. Ben Stiller as Chas is another standout in my opinion. He is the oldest and least accepting of his father's desire to reconnect with his family. Chas is in a state of personal crisis is dealing with a lot of anger and frustration. I was surprised that Ben Stiller played one of the more serious characters in the film.

Wes Anderson deals with familiar subjects: family, failure, betrayal and redemption. What's refreshing is his style and characterization. His eccentric characters could easily be lost in stereotypes but he keeps them human with moments of true warmth and emotion. This is most evident with Margot, played by Gwyneth Paltrow. She is cold, aloof and secretive, but not devoid of feeling as we see in several instances in the film. My favorite scene with her is between Margot and Ritchie when she realizes what length Ritchie's love for her has driven him. The pain in her face is so real.

I just can't recommend this film enough. Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson's writing is genius. The direction is meticulous and the performances are perfect. The Royal Tenenbaums is easily my favorite film this year.

Summary: This is an amazing film
Review: This movie was fantastic. It creates a new film genre for American film. Every scene was so beautifully filmed that it looked like a photograph or a painting from a child's storybook. The plot moved at a great pace and the acting was fantastic, especially Gene Hackman's performance as Royal. Every character was perfectly cast. Ben Stiller stole the show at times with his wonderfully funny performance. This movie has the perfect combination of humor, charm, and sadness. Watching it I was not sure if I wanted to cry or laugh. In the end, I was only sure of one thing...I wanted to see more. This is the rare kind of movie that makes you want to watch it again and again. The music was fantastic on the level of The Graduate. The story was completely original and the cast was superb! I highly recommend this film.

Summary: A major disappointment
Review: Well, I guess this is one of those films that highbrow critics will drool over, and I'll just shrug my shoulders. I found this movie to be almost totally devoid of humour, drama or interesting, empathetic characters. The thin plotline generally consists of random, quirky scenes thrown together with no dramatic momentum or character development. The fine cast is wasted here, playing characatures instead of characters, identifiable only by whatever eccentricities the writers assign to them (this movie's idea of humour is that the Tennenbaum offspring wear the same outfits they wore as children. Hilarious.). The audience I saw this film with sat in dead silence the whole time.

I say all this as a major fan of RUSHMORE, one of the greatest American comedies in years. Some of the above criticisms were also leveled at RUSHMORE, but in that film we had more time to get to know the characters, and could see the humanity beneath their eccentricities. The poolside party scene with Bill Murray, for example, is strange yet heartbreaking for anyone who has experienced the end of a relationship (most everyone).

But there are simply too many characters in TRT for us to get to truly know any of them. So what we are left with is a parade of strange characters that grows tiresome. It's obvious that Wes Anderson was trying to make a darker film with TRT, but it's hard to know what to feel at the end. The film is too quirky and disjointed to be either dark or funny.

In a way, Anderson (at least with this film) is in danger of becoming the next David Lynch - becoming so carried away with creating unpredictable, eccentric films that he ups the ante with each subsequent film, alienating all but his core audience. It's too early in Anderson's career to totally lose faith, but here's hoping that he remembers to inject more humanity into his next project, and not try to dazzle us with how anti-mainstream he can be.

Summary: At Home With Your Very Own Disfunctional Nightmare
Review: Royal Tanenbaum (Gene Hackman) is another American icon that belongs standing beside the heroic and compassionate busts of Homer Simpson and Al Bundy. I love it when Actors are able to hide inside their roles the way Gwyneth Paltrow disappeared into Margot Helen Tanenbaum. If you don't think depression affects the persona you present to the world, she will show you differently.

What a well thought out script and adaptation by director Wes Anderson. It is a film populated almost entirely by supporting actors and is not a movie for everyone. If you are a suzie cream cheese who has made it through life without a scar, this flick could either baffle or terrify you. Personally I thought it was just a hoot. The paintings were simply wonderfully hysterically funny. Risk the money. Go see it.
