Summary: ????
Review: I dont understand the official intelligenzia raving about this movie. Next time you are stranded by a snow storm in an airport hotel in the middle of a non-english speaking place for a week, just let run your video camera, do a bit of editing and called it a movie. Boring...

Rating: 2 stars
Summary: Completely undercooked, not even half-baked story.
Review: I love Japan and have always dreamed of going there some day and quiet frankly that setting is the only interesting aspect of this film. You keep waiting for a plot to develop or for some drama to make this story somewhat compelling, but it never happens. The film visually is very beatiful, but the movie has no substance. Shibuya, Japan is so alive and exciting it makes Times Square look boring. The characters themselves are extremely boring in this film, Bill Murray only provides 2 or 3 brief chuckle moments. The more you think about the characters the more you will hate them because they are miserable when they have absolutely nothing to complain about. Japan steals the show mainly because we never really get to see anything substantial of it in America movies like we do in this film. That is the only redeeming quality of the entire film. It is a complete joke that this film has been even nominated for any academy awards. This is certainly not even close to one of Bill Murray's best roles and the direction. Nothing happens in this movie. The girl stubs her toe and they go to the emergency room a couple of days later. That has to be the most boring emergency room trip I have ever seen in a movie before and is a perfect metaphor for the lack of interesting events and conversation captured on film here. The developments that transpire in the entire length of this film makes for a good 25 minutes of what could have been a good film. Just because you can silently stare off into space for long periods of times and are always unhappy looking that does not make you deep or interesting person. This film has no depth. It is somber and there is no reason for it. The characters are completely undeveloped and ultimately deserving of no attention or focus from society. Who ever wrote this film has absolutely nothing to say.

The DVD itself has barely any extra features, but does have DTS surround sound even though there is no great sound effects in this movie. I would classify this film as an insulting waste of my time. The two other people that I watched this with fell asleep because the movie has a lot of boring parts.

Summary: All out Memorable to the end and more
Review: Start with the reviews here that found this to be boring and pointless.I can ralate that to you hoping that youre car runs out of gas,to have some adventure.I really cant understand that viewpoint, always waiting for something to always happen. My friends girl said halfway through the movie,"Arent they going to make out or something?" Yeah, shes not to smart. She was needing for something to happen that she could clearly understand, yet it didnt,so she didnt like it.

This is one of the best movies I have seen. Its the kind of picture that will probably stay with you forever, like a part of youre own life.It is so good because it captures some of the most honest moments that are only caught once, just this one time, and you can see that, and miss it the minute its over.Just like a day in someones life,it happens one time, and thats it! .Its a translation that stands all alone, so damn thoughtful,it makes me a little sad when I think about it.Its about the moments, each and every one of them. All of them.

Summary: Alien nation
Review: One aspect I particularly appreciated was the observation of Japanese life and culture from a foreigner's perspective. Outwardly, Tokyo is a typical bustling metropolis. But with closer observation, strange and bizarre things come to light. From crazy TV talk shows, to Buddhist temples, to inexplicable politeness and reserve, the viewer is shown tidbits of Japanese society without either negative or positive commentary. Coppola allows the viewer to process the information just as the protagonists do. And these "alien" observations only add to the feeling of being lost in a foreign land.

Scarlett Johansson was wonderful. She displayed such an enchanting "naturalness" thoughout the film. Her performance, in my opinion, was more impressive than Murray's.

Summary: Clever Romance
Review: It's rare that a film can say so much about human nature without spoon-feeding the predictable. If you're expecting a typical hollywood script, you may be disappointed.

Coppola sets up nice contrasts between sexuality, intimacy, romance and friendship. She also creates an interesting tension through the age difference of the leads - again without forcing the issue.

There is no tidy closure but there is resolution. It's refreshing how the director leaves key moments to the imagination - allowing for a individual interpretation of the characters and story. Compare the ending with a sappy hit like You've Got Mail. What did Bob say to Charlotte, exactly? Only you know for sure. But we all know it wasn't, "Don't cry, Shop Girl."

Summary: That's All???
Review: One of the most boring movies I have ever watched. When it was finished my wife and I looked at each other and said "Is that all there is?". I would only recommend this if you were having a hard time sleeping and need something to help you doze off. HORRIBLE!!

Summary: A break from hollywood, and a slice of reality
Review: Lost in Translation was a breath of fresh air from the usual prefab Hollywood Glitz. It was great to see such a mainstream actor like Bill Murray in this type of role. This movie focused on what many frequent business travelers feel when they are always on the road from their wife and kids. They are "lost" in the figurative sense and in the literal sense. In this movie, Murray meets the lovely Johansson along the way who is also lost. Together the two have great dialogue and do a little bit in the way of "finding" themselves.

What was so great about this movie was how true it is to real life. Strangers don't typically hop into bed together with reckless abandon, and when people are making choices there concsience always plays a part in the decision. In this movie, you can really see the battling of Murray and Johasson with their innerselves. They want to take a particular course of action, but yet they know in their heart that it isn't the proper course.

Sofia Coppola showed a very strong effort in her sophomore film. With this promising film, hopefully many more great things are on the way from her.

Summary: A GOOD SLOW MOVIE
Review: A GREAT PIECE OF WRITING, GREAT ACTING WHICH I ENJOYED, BUT THE PACE OF THIS IS TOO SLOW. AT TIMES YOU FEEL LIKE YOU ARE RUNNING YOUR VCR IS IN SLOW MOTION. I DO NOT BELIEVE IT SHOULD BE BEST PICTURE OF THE YEAR, BUT A FILM THAT SHOULD BE WATCHED ON VIDEO.

Summary: A Stupid Film That Depicts The Japanese In The Wrong Way!
Review: Having lived in Japan for about four years I was slightly appalled at the fact "Lost In Translation" depicts the Japanese people as idiots. Parts of the film such as when Bill Murray is doing a drink commercial the Japanese photographer is talking rapidly in order to answer a simple question, Murray says is that all he wants? This is misleading to say the least, the Japanese do not act like this! Another part has Murray standing in an elevator towering high above the Japanese occupants, this again is misleading and insinuates that Japanese men are very short. The movie itself is pretty dull, a model (Bill Murray) and a young girl are bored in their Tokyo hotel room. They venture out on their own to parts of Tokyo (the Ginza, some beatiful shrines, etc.) and end up back in the hotel. They finally meet in the hotel's bar and begin a friendship. "Lost In Translation" does have some beautiful scenes of Tokyo, and Kyoto, but other than that I found the film to be boring. I could hardly give this film a five star rating (especially having lived in Japan and knowing how wonderful the Japanese people are) like other reviewers, as I felt the dialog to be terrible and the acting just so so. Naturally, the film gets high marks because of it's director Sophia Coppola. My advice would be to skip this ridiculous film altogether.

Summary: Lost In Hibernation (yawn)
Review: This is the kind of movie that all the critics love, but most common people won't understand. I hate to give the movie away for anyone who hasn't seen it yet, but here goes: NOTHING EVER HAPPENS. What is so captivating about a boring guy who's life is even less interesting than my own? And someone please tell me what Bill Murray does here to honestly deserve an Oscar nomination! Anyone could have played the part... ANYONE! Who can say with a straight face that Bill Murray's name could ever be placed alongside high caliber actors such as Nicholson, De Niro, & Day-Lewis? Get real.

If you really want to see what all the hoopla is about, rent it, don't buy it.
