Summary: ENJOYABLE.....BUT WHY SO MUCH PRAISE?
Review: This movie is not the masterpiece that it is being hyped as by Hollywood. Sophia Coppola has made a mildly funny movie, which I think is most effective at conveying the detatched and sombre mood that goes hand in hand with isolation. Not once did I laugh out loud, nor was I awed by Bill Murray, who just restrained himself the whole time. Nevertheless, this movie had a hypnotic quality for me and I found it to be entertaining. Just don't expect the best movie you've ever seen.

Summary: Love/hate
Review: This is the type of movie that either you get it, or you don't. Judging from the reviews here, it's probably about 50-50 that you will like it or hate it. Don't watch this movie if you are looking for a typical Bill Murray knee-slapper. Don't watch this movie if you're looking for typical Hollywood action, romance or cheesy cliche-filled story. Do watch this movie if you like watching films about people discovering themselves and life. Do watch this film if you like subtle, satirical humor done in a well-crafted way. Despite other reviews, this film isn't "artsy," it just takes more thought than the average mass-audience picture that seems to have taken over the movie industry. I still like some of those types of films too, but this is a different type of film.

Summary: If you watch movies to escape - skip this one!
Review: Okay, I'm getting tired of all of these artsy-fartsy "day in the life" movies. I'm frustrated that after watching LOST IN TRANSLATION I will never get back the 2 hours of my life I gave away. If you like movies without any real point, this is for you. If you like to see your favorite comedic actors in dramatic roles, this is for you.
Bill Murray is not only NOT FUNNY in this movie, he's downright boring. The jokes that are in the film are rehashed from years ago - like when the director of the commercial talks for 2 minutes straight and the translator tells Murray "He want more passion." Murray - "That's it? That's all he said?"

That was the funniest part of the whole movie.

Skip this turkey.

Summary: A Bit of a Disappointment
Review: Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson have surprising on-screen chemistry despite a massive age difference. I must disagree with someone's comment that acting "real" isn't acting. If it isn't realistic, then it is hammy, so what do you look for in acting? The story, however, is a little dull for my tastes. All though this film does an excellent job of creating the illusion of reality, I prefer the movies where something actually happens. This storyline has no hook, nothing to keep the audience in the seats. And, it doesn't help that the film portrays the Japanese as obnoxious, which couldn't be further from the truth. The viewer is left depressed, irritated, and a little bit drowsy.

Summary: Hillarious?
Review: So, Rolling Stone critic Peter Travers calls this film "hillarious" according to the reviews on the box. Peter, please define "hillarious" for us. Please.

Summary: What a different film.
Review: A pleasant movie to watch. Lost in Translation is almost indescribable because the film is basically about nothing. Bill Murray plays the struggling actor character with much honesty, and Johansen plays the confused 20 something well too. Set in a vibrant setting, the outlandish Tokeo, this film centers around the two leads. They constantly bump into each other and grow a friendship. It is very sweet to watch the two together who have this weird chemistry on screen. The only complaint about this film, is that you sit through an hour and a half of PG rated humor and then suddenly, Bill Murray is sitting in a strip bar watching a Japanese stripper. I though the film could've done without the scene but that might be the only way Sofia Coppola could sell her film. All in all the film was wonderful and I would put it in among the years best films. See this movie for a relaxing film.

Summary: A Little Over-rated But Still Very Nice
Review: I don't share the conventional wisdom that this is some kind of masterpiece, but it's a good film. It's slow in spots but Bill Murray is inspired and Scarlett Johansson is touching, and the last 30 minutes are genuinely poignant. I think the reason this film has been so praised is because it is so different from most commercial Hollywood movies out there. But I remember the movies from approximately 1967 to 1981, and believe me, this is what they used to be like before Spielberg and George Lucas infantilized them and dumbed them down. Characters and stories were allowed to be complex and adult, like a good short story (like this film.) People saw the name "Coppola" on this film and got nostalgic for a time when movies still mattered to grown-ups. This movie isn't in the same league as "The Godfather." But's it's definitely in the same honorable tradition.

Summary: boring
Review: This is a boring movie about boring people being bored. If I wanted to watch that, I'd just sit in front of a mirror.

I understand that it's a pseudo-art film. I understand that Murray isn't supposed to be funny in it. I understand that the connection between the two characters is supposed to be charming and not sexual. I know that life and the people you encounter will generally be a disappointment. But I knew all that before I pushed play and I don't know any more after watching, so it was basically just a waste of time.

Summary: "Lost In Translation" SUCKS!!!
Review: First, I would like to say that I'm a big fan of the french new wave and Stanley Kubrick. I think I can appreciate an "art" movie. However:

1. Lost In Translation is a wannabe French film. It has nothing going for it. Of course it is very boring and pretentious, but that does not make it art.

2. The acting is HORRIBLE, Sofia Coppola is the first director to get a boring and unfunny performance from Bill Murray, there is no chemistry at all between Scarlett Johannson and Bill Murray.

3. Dumb people like to feel smart too. That's why so many morons go around saying they like this film.

This film is so shallow and empty, there's really nothing to say about it, other than IT'S REALLY BORING, THE CINEMATOGRAPHY IS HORRIBLE AND THE ACTING SUCKS.

Nice try Sofia, I guess you've proven that talent is not genetic.

Summary: What a disappointment!
Review: I anxiously awaited the DVD release after having missed the theatre showing and heard high praises from movie critics. I heard the plot parallels that of award-winning director Wong Kar-wai's film "In the Mood for Love," which I absolutely love. That Sofia Coppola acknowledged director Wong Kar-wai in her Academy Awards acceptance speech and sited "In the Mood for Love" as an inspiration for this film only increased my interest in "Lost in Translation."

Well, so much for that. Instead of being like a good dream as it has been compared to, for me the entire experience felt more like sitting in traffic at rush hour: it's long, boring, uneventful, frustrating, tiring, and in the end, all pointless and readily forgettable.

Even for a "mood" movie, it doesn't have much of a plot to draw you in. Set in a place foreign to most of us, the movie failed terribly at presenting to the audience the cultural shock and the totally different Tokyo cityscape the characters in the movie are experiencing beyond the very superficial. The dialogues were uninspiring, the pace torturous and patience-trying, the characters uninitiated and surprisingly bland...it is, actually, really sad for me to find out just how unpolished and half-cooked the movie is.

Yet "Lost in Translation" is not without a few great moments, to the credit of Bill Murry, who nonetheless has delivered much better performances in others movies. If I had read the script before the movie was produced, I would have thought it had great potential. That is, Sofia Coppola definitely had a great idea, a concept not usually made into a film. But the final film as we see it feels rather prematurely delivered, as if rushed to and through production. What a shame. With a little more work in the script and the production, I think this really could have been a great film.

I expected a memorable film from Sofia Coppola. Sadly, this film did not live up to my expectations. As for being inspired by "In the Mood for Love"...well, then it did not live up to its inspiration either. If you are in the mood for an artsy film following a similar plot, or would like to see how this film *should* have been done, I highly recommend "In the Mood for Love." If, instead, you are a fan of Bill Murry and are here because of him, you'd be much better off renting one of his older movies. "Lost in Translation" will lose its audience, and not because of translation.
