Rating: Summary: One of the all time WORST movies ever made Review: This movie is one of the worst that I've ever seen and my dead grandmother could have done a better job than Bill Murray ... When the credits rolled at the end of the movie, I had two conflicting thoughts ... First ... hey wait, the story hasn't even started yet ... what's the story??? and 2. THANK GOD IT'S OVER !!!! Only intellectual snobs who are totally clueless but feel they have to be PC will say that they honestly like this movie ...
Rating: Summary: Sweet and Innocent Review: Lost and Translation is about 2 lonely Americans who meet in Japan and strike a friendship. One is a actor who is there doing wine commercials and the other is a lonely wife of a phographer who has no time for her. They meet one night at the bar in the motel they're staying at and after that start spending more time together. They get so close as friends that it's gonna be hard for both of them when it's time to say their good-byes. I guess you can say they fall in love but there's no sex, is basically romance without the romance. That's a nice change too and it just leaves the film to be sweet and innocent. It shows that 2 people can enjoy being with each other without sex as well which a lot of movies don't have. Mean in a lot movies, guy meets girl and they hit if off and have sex. Here guy meets girl, they hit it off but never have sex. Even if the movie isn't really meant to be romantic it still is. It sorta has a Casablanca feel to it where they love each other but can never be together. She's married and so is he. So they just enjoy each others company and make the best of their otherwise boring and lonely trip to Japan. It's a very mellow film but the fact that it can be slow and mellow makes it seem more realistic. It's a really good movie and Bill Murray Scarlett Johansson are wonderful.
Rating: Summary: Losuto en Turansulashion ga suki desu! Review: Excellent movie. It puts you in a real situation and drags you through the entire drama, comedy, and insomia that result in a trip to Japan. One of the cutest and most real affairs ever captured on film. It is easy to fall in love with both characters, and the movie will continue to calm and relax ater repeated watching.
Rating: Summary: A Little Gem Review: Triple-threat Sofia Coppola (producer, writer, director) has given us a little gem with her, "Lost in Translation." It's a simple story: two discontented souls with massive jet-lag, and big relationship issues, meet by happenstance in Tokyo, and provide comfort to one-another. Within the simplicity Ms. Coppola nails jet-lag, ennui, relationship discontent, and Americans abroad with a gentle, humorous, and deft touch. She also gets the attraction of age for youth, and vice versa, but keeps it grounded in how things could really happen, rather than slipping into middle-age fantasy. All the performances work. Bill Murray shows something near genius, and Scarlett Johannson is lovely and effective, though she has less to do. The supporting characters are also well drawn, and the players inhabit their roles. This is a movie that could have easily gone bad, it not only doesn't, it goes exceedingly well. It was a pleasure to watch, and I recommend it for a mellow evening at home.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic!!! Not for the sheep who want a Hollywood movie. Review: Here is the deal. This movie is not for those that are looking for the typical Hollywood BS. Bottom line this movie is about atmosphere and what happens when two people of a different age group find one another over a weeks stay in a foreign country and rediscover themselves. These are two "lost" souls who were looking for some answers. They find a path to discovery of some of those answers in finding one another. Both are isolated in their own way which is why they are both so lonely. So when they meet they have that in common. It is that common bond that allows them to open up to one another and share a few great moments that hopefully lead to a better path. This is a thinking persons movie. If you do not like to think go check out XXX with Vin Disel and call it day. Personally I will take "Lost In Translation" any day over the mindless garbage.
Rating: Summary: Middle of the road Review: This film deals with isolation, dread, and boredom in a remote strange land. The plot is about Bill Murray a married man meeting a girl with a Boyfriend in the same hotel that he is staying at. The relationship the two have is hindered by the fact that he's married, she's commited, and the fact that he's leaving Tokyo in a couple of days. As the movie progresses you learn that Bill's marriage isn't even a happy one. Overall, I thought Bill Murray gave a great performance in this film, and in terms of visual aspects I really liked the cinematography. The best scene in this film is when Bill Murray is at his Whiskey ad shoot. As for the story line, it sort of meanders all over the place and ended up with no real resolution other than leaving you with the idea that through all the isolation and boredom it brought two people together and gave them both an experience that was memorable. Critics adored this film, but I've always prided my self in being an independent thinker and seeing through the hype. A three star film.
Rating: Summary: The movie is fine if you like... Review: ...slow movies without an identifiable soundtrack. ...movies about romances between old men and young women. If you don't (and you're like me), then don't bother watching this movie! The movie started out okay, but just went downhill and slowed down as the movie progressed.
Rating: Summary: It's not "What About Bob," but that's OK. Review: If you are reading these reviews in the hope that you will be able to make up your mind whether to buy this movie or not, chances are you are completely confused. Is this the greatest movie of 2003 or an over-hyped joke? Well I'm here to say it's both. But I can't tell you who will love this movie and who will hate it. And it's definitely a "love it or hate it movie." I agree it is not a typical "Hollywood" movie, and for me that's its highest selling point. Do I think that because I loved this movie that I am somehow better or wiser than people that didn't? No. I think I found a lot to relate to in this movie and they didn't. End of story. Let me share something I learned as an undergrad art major: ART IS SUBJECTIVE. Some people like Picasso's work, some people hate it. Most people like Monet because "the colors are pretty." But does that mean Picasso wasn't a 20th Century master or that Monet was a hack because he looks good over people's couches? Absolutely not! It can be the same with film. Not everyone is going to like the same movies. I don't think it's the movie's fault that it got over-hyped. Welcome to America. The media over-hypes everything. Either you will find things you relate to in this and thus you "get" the film or you don't relate to anything, and you don't "get" it. It has nothing to do with being a more intelligent or a more cultured movie-goer in my opinion. It has more to do with a person's individual life experiences as to whether this movie makes an impression or not. So how can I tell someone they will love this movie unless I know what their experiences have been? So back to the main question; should you buy this movie? Well that's a tough one. If you are a fan of Bill Murray from his past comedy movies, I would say no or maybe rent the film first so you're only out $4-$5 if you are part of the "hated it" group. Hey, I liked "What About Bob" but still loved this movie, so who knows. If you generally like foreign films, I think you will appreciate the way this movie was done. I think it has more in common with some of the French films I've seen than with most American films. It seems that the people that say they can't understand the hype got caught up in it themselves and went in with extremely high expectations. The problem with high expectations is greater disappointment when the film doesn't meet those expectations. All I can say is to expect a very different movie, expect to laugh a little, expect to see two people be a little lost that use each other to feel a little found. I can't promise you'll love it, but it never hurts to expand your viewing horizons every now and then. There is something to be taken from the movies we hate, too. Rent it and make up your own mind. Personally, I enjoyed it and plan to buy.
Rating: Summary: YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING...LOSE THIS MOVIE Review: Argh! Awful! Terrible S L O W and boring! Why Sofia Coppala received a Golden Globe for this is beyond me. There is one good scene in the whole movie. Thankfully Bill Murray helped one not to need pain killers to get through the whole movie. What all of the Whopla was about for Coppala was beyond me. Save your money. If you must - rent it and weep. This movie is lost alright but not in translation. I made the mistake of buying it and immediatly lost it! Thankfully!
Rating: Summary: Disappointing & bland Review: This is movie that you'll either rate high or low with little middle ground. I had high expectations, but at the end, I felt I had gone nowhere interesting or enlightening or been entertained. I don't see any Academy Award material here. My .02 cents worth.
