Summary: Definitive John Wayne
Review: It's amazing to me that John Wayne did what I would consider his best work not in westerns or war movies, but in this romantic comedy set in Ireland.

The yank John Wayne meets and is greatly impressed by the beautiful irish country girl Maureen O'Hara, but he simply doesn't understand the traditional rules of courtship and marriage in Ireland in the early 1900s.

The casting is superb, and the supporting actors make the whole thing come together.

There's nothing quite like a good old knock down drag out Hollywood enhanced fist fight is there? And all for love, face, and honor.

Top-notch entertainment. A movie that both husbands and wives will enjoy.

Summary: Absolutely one of my favorite movies!!!!
Review: The Quiet Man was a funny romantic movie. I am a John Wayne fan anyway but this was one of his best movies. Mickalein Flinn was fantastic! Mary Kate Danaher(Moreen O'Hara)was absolutely beautiful. This movie is definately a great movie to watch with the one you love.

Summary: Great movie, but terrible transfer to DVD by Republic
Review: Rent before you buy. Apparently Republic allowed their master copy of this great film to deteriorate, and now they've transferred it to DVD without any attempt to restore the original quality. Those of us who remember the beauty of the original were shocked to see the lack of resolution and quality of picture and sound that Republic has been willing to transfer to DVD. Certainly I will be more careful in the future if I pick up anything with the Republic logo! Their credibility has taken a beating with this release!

Summary: GREAT movie---Lousy quality DVD!!!
Review: My husband and I bought 3 DVD's of The Quite Man (from 2 different sources), and have yet to hear a sound from any one of them! And we have a new 'top-of-the-line' DVD player!

This is one of my 3 favorite movies of all time. I have waited for 2 years---checking weekly to get it in DVD format. What a disappoint!

Production companies produce excellent sound and picture quality on movies that are not worth watching once. And this GREAT movie (worthy of at least 1000 viewings) is evidently just thrown out to the patient, eager and unsuspecting public with no hope of even hearing it!

PLEASE Republic Studios---DO SOMETHING!!! (We'll still be watching and waiting.)

Summary: Great Movie But on DVD
Review: The Quiet man is one John Waynes best films. I also was looking forward to owning the movie on DVD. After buying a copy I was saddly disapointed. Not only was the color not what I remembered, the sound track was not playable on my DVD player because of a formating problem at the factory. Be advised rent the DVD if possible first to see if it will play on your machine. Hopefully the company will clear up the problems in future releases.

Summary: " If just for the scenery you have to view this Movie treat
Review: To say the least here is a movie you can watch over and over and never tire of all elements involved.I highly recommend it for all ages and tastes. This is True romance, out doing the Titanic by far for true Love." The ending will not leave you with that sinking feeling".

Summary: Great Film - Sub-Par DVD Quality
Review: Shame on Republic Studios for producing a sub-par DVD transfer on such a wonderful classic. "The Quiet Man" deserved much better!

If you already own the VHS copy don't waste your money on the DVD, unless you're interested in Leonard Maltins' "Making of the Quiet Man" featurette.

Summary: A wonderful movie slightly marred by video quality
Review: I can't say enough good things about the content of the story, the actors, and the scenery of this film. It's one I keep coming back to it again and again, and is one of those movies that I was hoping/waiting for to appear on DVD. That said, I give the DVD only 3 stars because the video quality in many places is not much above a good VHS tape. The problems include soft picture, over/undersaturation of colors, and--worst of all in this format--sound very obviously out of synch. I was hoping for much more from this DVD and was disappointed. I don't know whether or not this was the best master they could come up with, but it may be worth renting first to see if technical niggles will get in the way of your enjoyment.

Summary: A classic mixture of Irish blarney and true romance
Review: The Quiet Man takes us back to a time that never really existed but should have! The retired boxer coming home to his Irish roots and in the process falling for the fiery Irish colleen. Mixed-up with this is the general back-drop of a peaceful, 1920s Irish village which becomes enthralled at the mating game going on and adds it own brand of uniquely Irish shenenagans !

Beautifully shot around Galway and the West Coast (I know I've been !), the film does true justice, but is always kind, to Ireland as everybody would like it to be!

Miss it and "...you'll regret it to your dyin'day, if ever you live as long!!!"

Summary: A Fascinating Look at the Custom of Dower
Review: From a lawyer's point of view, The Quiet Man gives an interesting insight into the ancient custom of dower or the bride's "fortune" as the movie has it. Legally, the husband had the right to administer the dower fund but could not use it for himself. He was a trustee of his wife's money and in effect the money was her reserve in the event the marriage failed. In the movie, however, when Sean Thornton finally gets his brother-in-law to hand over the fortune, he and Kate take the money and throw it into the furnace. Thus, it was true love since Kate was willing to give up her fortune for her man. All that being said, it's the greatest movie about Ireland ever made and, like Casablanca, I can recite every word, particularly that great phrase about "they're bringing them by bus from Ballygoon."
