Rating: Summary: Charming historical romantic comedy! Review: He is Frederic Francois Chopin (Hugh Grant), a shy, polite composer prone to tuberculosis. She is Georges Sand (Judy Davis), a rash, impetuous novelist prone to scandal. Surrounded by the other artistic greats of the day (among them Liszt and Delacroix) the two meet and fall in love, despite the best and worst intentions of everyone around them. If you can find this, watch it!
Rating: Summary: romance, witty comedy, ensamble of great actors, period film Review: I enjoyed this film immensely! It is more than a simple romance story between Chopin and Madame Sand. The subplots and other characters are just as intriguing and humorous as the main relationship. The humor is so subtle in it's satire of 19th century French life and the social customs of the day that you will find almost every scene funny or witty. This film is not a chic flick. Guys will really like it too. You can watch this film many times and pick up new things to enjoy! It's too bad this movie is not more widely known and appreciated.
Rating: Summary: A true work of romantic, comic art Review: I just saw the movie today and I thought it was great. Hugh Grant was incredible in the movie. And he looked so good. Judy Davis' proformance was inspriring. It's a great movie to watch when you just want to kick back and have a good laugh.
Rating: Summary: Good movie, has its things though Review: I really enjoyed the movie, it made fell in lovw with the music of Chopin. There are good moments, like when Sands quotes that famous line about "not being virtous but full of love" that one is a clasic. But I think they should have had more conflicts of love btween Sand and Chopin. But the movie is good . I recomended it.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful, simply loved it, but.................... Review: i wish this movie was MORE about Chopin and LESS about Sand.
seems to me like this movie was meant to show us the genius of Chopin, and instead it managed to show us what George Sand was about. Hugh Grant really did not do or say much in this movie, which was very dissapointing to me. his accent was OK, not great like Meryl Streep in Sophie's Choice, but fine. Liszt's hungarian accent wasn't accurate as well, but nobody seems to care about that..........
also, this movie covers a very short period of time, like possibly couple of years, in the life of George Sand, from the time she meets Chopin and hears his music to the time they travel to Majorca together with her children. it ends so abrubtly it makes you want to cry.
but, still i loved this movie. however, i will keep my ears and eyes open for that great movie about the great one and only--Chopin, who in my mind deserves so much more.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic video! Review: I'm so glad to see that this film is finally available on video cassette. Witty and funny, this is true entertainment with superb performances by the entire cast.
Rating: Summary: Outrageously funny! Review: Impromptu is a amusing and clever portrayal of the 19th century love affair between composer Frederic Chopin and French romance author George Sand, the pen name of baroness Aurore Dudevant.
George Sand is so captivated by the music of composer Fredric Chopin that she falls in love with him and pursues him relentlessly, while fighting off several other male suitors. In her desperate quest to win his affections, she boldly invites herself to the country home of a wealthy art patron (Emma Thompson) where other leading figures of the period are also guests. It is in this setting that we are treated to the hysterical antics of these love sick characters. Everything that can go wrong does! Finally Sand captures Chopin's attentions, but he is not immediately impressed with her. Eventually, he becomes as captivated with her gift of prose as she is with his music, and they fall in love. However, it is clear that Sand is the one who wears the pants in the relationship, literally and figuratively. She completely domintaes the relationship, but is nevertheless proves herself a loyal and loving companion. Her momentary lapse into femininity is soon replaced by the cross-dressing, cigar-chomping personality she is so well known for.
Impromptu is a tender love story laden with slapstick-style comedy. Everything about this movie is pure, unadulterated fun -- the characters, their madness, and the antics of George Sand as she seeks to secure Chopin's affection. What a blast! Have fun with this one.

Rating: Summary: An Underappreciated, Rollicking Fun Time! Review: Impromptu is one of those films that you hear about...an underground following, and an incredible good time. Why is it that these films are the ones we never see in the theatre, but are usually 3 times better than what we currently are offered at the local multiplex.Judy Davis shines (as always) as authoress George Sand, a masculine woman writer who falls in love with the feminine pianist Chopin (played by Hugh Grant). Some fabulous writing here, and a chance for Judy Davis to let herself go and have fun. The script wouldn't exactly be Oscar nominated, but it is cleverly written, and the charactors are just too much fun. The list of Hollywood names in this film was overwhelming when I first saw it...each offering their own unique talents to keeping the film together. It was fun to see so many serious actors playing comedic roles. For fun, for romance, and for some awesome views of the French countryside, check out Impromptu...you'll be glad you did.
Rating: Summary: Comedy, adventure, romance -- something for everyone Review: Impromptu is one of those rare films that has a bit of something for everyone yet blends seemlessly into a vibrant and engrossing story. Set against the backdrop of high culture in Victorian England, the movie adresses ideas the themes of love, friendship and deceit as it traces the unlikely love affair between Madame George Sand and Franz Chopin. Had the movie recieved a larger release, memorable performaces by Bernadette Peters, Julian Sand, Hugh Grant, Mandy Petinken and Emma Thompson could have gotten the recognition they richly deserve. Witty, well paced, georgeously shot, outrageously funny and superbly acted, this movie is one you'll want to watch again and again.
Rating: Summary: Judy Davis Shines Review: Judy Davis Shines in her role. The best part of this film I think.
