Summary: Romantic Comedy
Review: This is a nice romantic comedy, but the picture on the movie box is misleading. This movie does not really have much sex in it, and the sex that it has winds up being either interrupted, observed, tongue-in-cheek, or fetish-based. So if you are looking for a movie with some hot scenes in it, you will be disappointed - unless being covered head-to-toe in latex wall paint is your idea of a good time. (I'm not against it, but I do recommend you get the right kind of paint. Can't you get blood poisoning from that stuff?)

The movie spends most of its time talking about and alluding to sex. But most of the actual encounters are interrupted. In the first scene, the van they are in gets towed just as things are getting interesting. In the next scene, they are interrupted by mother and brother showing up for an extended visit. They have a good time later, but the camera is mostly on the brother, who hears them and comes in to peek. After that, they have a good time in a public bathroom stall, but the camera is mostly on the people outside the stall listening to them.

The body painting scene, which a lot of people have talked about, is one of the few scenes that isn't interrupted or observed. But the camera still jumps around too much and cuts into the action at wierd angles (with a close-up of a thigh here and a calf there). Unless you have some repressed emotions to work out with your dad, who happened to be a house painter, this scene will stimulate you intellectually but not otherwise.

The other scene a lot of people talked about was the vibrator scene. This one is done humorously (as they all pretty much are), with the camera on the older (50s) woman's face, even though she appears to be fully dressed at all times. The camera doesn't even stay there, but bounces back and forth between her with the vibrator and her son having sex with a woman in the park. These scenes probably come the closest to being erotic, and you may at least be able to get a semi out of it.

In summary, I expected this movie to be erotic, so I was disappointed.

Summary: Just a light movie...
Review: If you're looking for something intillectual, this is not the film for you. Nor is it the film for you if you're homophobic or don't like trans people. Also true if you're easily offended.

However, if you're looking for a light commedy with some unconventional twists, Better than Chocolate is a lot of fun. I can watch this movie countless times. It's a feel good movie. Yeah, it's dated and pigeoned holed, but overall it's a good movie for a rainy day.

Summary: No Surprises Here...
Review: There's no shortage of mediocre gay/lesbian movies out these days, in which we follow the trials and tribulations of a group of friends (gay, lesbian, maybe an occasional trans) as they fall in and out of love and do a lot of dancing. "Better than Chocolate" is another one of those movies and it's okay for what it is, but I can't help wishing these movies would aim just a little bit higher.

As with most films in this genre, there's the central love story, here a sort of instant-fall-in-love scenario between two women, both of whom are essentially nice, attractive, etc. The "character flaw" of one is that she lives on the road and always leaves when the going gets tough; the other one's "flaw" is that she hasn't told her mother that she's gay, yet, and hasn't really committed to her identity as a lesbian. So, they fall in love, the mother comes to stay with her daughter, hijinks ensue. There are a few subplots tossed in, the most interesting of which centers around the one transgender character who is hoping (in vain) that her parents have finally accepted her.

The good things about this movie? Well, for one thing, there are a couple of truly erotic scenes between the two main characters, and well done erotica is a rarity in ANY genre of film. Also, there are a couple of song/dance routines that are performed by the main characters that are truly nifty. As a matter of fact, I wish they'd done more of that and less of the soap-opera-y stuff.

Perhaps the biggest flaw in the film is just how predictable it all is. You know who's going to end up together, you know that the mother will eventually find out the truth and, after a bit of shell-shock, will accept her daughter as a lesbian, etc. There are no surprises. And the political subtext (censorship is bad, violent skin-heads are bad, prejudice is bad, etc.) never risks challenging its viewers; it's pretty much a given that anyone who's going to see this movie is going to agree with all the opinions expressed within it.

So, if you're in the mood for yet another gay/lesbian comedy/drama, you could do worse than this one. But don't go into this expecting anything profound or brilliant... "Better than Chocolate" never challenges or surprises, it only re-affirms what's already been said in other, similar movies.

Summary: Better than chocolate
Review: Funny, sexy and charming tale of gay love. Christina Cox and Karen Drywer look suited for each other. Wendy Crewson does a very excellent portrayal of Lila, the visiting mother. You'll laugh when she finds ther object under the bed and out that Judy is a transexual. Dissapointed to find the Anne Wheeler interview isn't inculded on the director's cut version. I wish I had the courage Maggie had at her age.

Summary: Better Than Chocolate - Not!
Review: After reading all the positive reviews for "Better Than Chocolate" here, I can only assume that my age (over 50) accounts for my minority opinion. I've been out for 30 years and have seen a lot of lesbian movies. This sorry mess really scrapes the bottom of the barrel, along with another clunker called "By Design" starring Patty Duke from about 20 years ago. "Better Than Chocolate" is amateurishly acted, has an unbelievable plot, and features stereotypical characters working out a variety of ludicrous liaisons and tribulations. The subplot of male-to-female transsexual as wise woman stuck in my craw, as did one particularly offensive scene in which our heroine, Kim, beats up a hideously cartoonish "transsexual-hating lesbian feminist" type. The lead actresses are cute, so if that's your sole criterion for liking a lesbian movie, be my guest. However, if you prefer some plot development, acting and believability in your cinematic entertainment, keep looking, because there ain't none here. Pass me a Hershey's kiss, please.

Summary: Better Than Chocolate
Review: This little gem is a delight whether you are gay or straight. The characters are beautifully portrayed by the well chosen cast. Peter Outerbridge is brilliant as Judy. His wonderful performance placed him on my "most admired" actors list. All the characters were not only lovable but believable. What a marvelous blend of laughter, tears, and insight into a world that is so misunderstood and much maligned. A triumph for all involved, and a must for women everywhere who need chocolate to survive life's ups and downs.

Review: If you are lesbian and looking for a movie with a plot, cute cast and good sex scenes this is your movie! It has two hot girls as main characters, a story line that is good, and the body painting scene has to in my opinion one if not the hottest lesbian sex scenes which is hard to find.
