Summary: Untouchable
Review: As far as off-beat commedies go (or any genre of film for that matter), this movie is untouchable. The only commedy I can think of that even comes close to this movie in wit and brilliant character development is Rushmore, and even that is a relatively distant second. I have watched this film about a thousand times and I still find interesting and minute details that I have never noticed before. Anytime you get stressed out or find yourself taking life a little too seriously just kick back with a White Russian and enjoy this film.

Summary: "Desert Island" movie
Review: If you like your humor to slap you in the face or, at least, not to require you to watch and think, don't buy this movie. On the other hand, if you like your humor witty, understated, allusive and often about "guys" (as opposed to "men"), this movie is one that you should take with you if you are ever planning to be marooned on a desert island, because you can (and should!) watch it over and over, and it just keeps getting better. The pattern is set in the first scene, when the "Dude" (Jeff Bridges), without embarrassment, writes a check for 69 cents for groceries! Such a simple device says so much, which is borne out and developed as the film progresses. With strong echoes of Alan Taylor's "Palookaville" and other films of the genre, this is a story about males of the species and their relationships - how they can foul up ridiculously time after time, apparently care only for the most trivial things (booze, bowling), yet still depend upon and support each other. The genius of the Coen brothers' writing is to maintain the credibility and interest of the disjointed, and sometimes surreal, plot. Bridges and John Goodman (as "Walter") are superb, with knockout support from the minor roles, especially John Turturro ("Jesus", a latino pedophile who likes to bowl, and manages to bring the kinky menace of his pedophilia to his bowling) and Julianne Moore ("Maud", an outrageously pretentious artist of female sexuality who lives with a splendidly camp and ineffectual Liverpudlian ninny ("Noss Harrington", a "video artist")). Some humorous scenes are classics that will reliably raise a laugh a long time after the movie is over ("Walter" wrecking a new Corvette with a tire lever, thinking that it belongs to a recalcitrant teenager, only to be set upon by the large, middle-aged owner; "Walter" biting off a nihilist's ear and launching it, in slo-mo, vertically into the night). In the end, the plot matters less than the people, in whose bungling, indiscretions and vanities many viewers will recognize themselves.

Summary: You're Lebowski...I'm the Dude!
Review: Certainly one of the craziest and most uproarious comedies in recent memory. Jeff Daniels, sporting a considerable paunch and some very comfortable attire, is Jeff Lebowski, but everyone knows him as "Dude", a stoner and ace bowler. There is another Lebowski in Southern California however and that one is a rich civic do-gooder with a young trophy wife who owes quite a bit of money around town. When the Dude gets mistaken for "The Big Lebowski", our civic minded millionaire, some goons pay him a visit to collect on the wife's debts. When the Dude visits the Big Lebowski to straighten out the mess things go from bad to worse and before it is over we will meet a German new wave band, a VW driving private eye, a screenwriter confined to an iron lung, a landlord who performs interpretive dance routines and a few cynical LA cops. John Goodman provides enourmous belly laughs as the Dude's sidekick Walter, a Vietnam Vet and convert to Judaism who packs a .45 pistol at all times. Philip Seymour Hoffman is perfect as the Big Lebowski's toadie. Perhaps the only comedy specifically set during the Gulf War.

Review: the movie is one of my favorites. It gets better with each watching. Every line is subtly humerous. although the plot is obviously not the best ever, it is not the point of the movie. LISTEN PEOPLE. listen to what they say and youl love it.

Summary: Beware if you watch this movie...
Review: ...because you may find that 10-20% of all sentences you speak afterwards will reference it. At least that's what happened to our clique.

Just as many others, I didn't even come close to fully appreciating this movie the first time I watched it. After Fargo, a movie with so much plot and structure it smacks you across the face, this just seemed disjointed and confused. There were still overtly funny parts, and I definitely enjoyed it, but it's when you start catching the subtleties that it blows your mind and interpolates itself into your daily speech.

The Coens add such a HUMAN element to this movie...their use of sentence fragments, incoherent thoughts, and completely disjointed conversations (especially the bowling alley scenes) is unbelievable. The thing that really makes the flick to me is that almost every line in the latter half of the movie has a predecessor...in other words a character will say something early in the movie, then you'll hear someone else (usually the DUDE) use the same phrase in completely the wrong context - chinaman, beaver, "the parlance of our times", "this agression will not stand", "my concern is", Ralph's grocery store - all of these phrase are tossed out early and completely botched later in the movie. If that doesn't strike you as something that would be funny, then you might not like this movie. But if you do appreciate stuff like that, upon repeated viewings this movie will most likely change from a bunch of over-the-top stupidity to one of the most tight-knit, layered movies I've ever seen, especially for a comedy!! I still figure things out EVERY time I watch it.

(For example, upon last viewing I realized that there is "German techno-pop" playing in the background when we see the "nihilists" for the last time - brilliant!!!)

Basically, if you are someone who considers the dialogue of a movie to be a vital ingredient to your enjoyment, then you'll most likely LOVE this movie to the point of fanaticism. If you're more about the plot, then you'll probably like Fargo or Hudsucker Proxy better, especially on first viewing.

Summary: Jeff Bridges and John Goodman in top form
Review: There is no way a list of top alltime comedies should leave off "The Big Lebowski". It more than Jeff Bridges and John Goodman in top form. There are dozens of characters making significant contributions. It all forms a complex collage that may not fit together 100%, but still creates great entertainment and plenty of laughs. Furthermore, the comedy has a way of staying fresh in repeated watchings. The DVD is a great investment as you'll be able to watch it again and again when your mood gets down and you require a comedic "pick-me up".

Review: did you guys know that this film has 259 f-words? hahaha! it is second on the all time list, behind only Pulp Fiction. if you dont like swearing, dont see this film. but if you wanna laugh a lot, the Big Lebowski is a hilarious film.

Review: This is the best damn movie ever made. If you watched it once and didn't like it, watch it again. If you still don't like it then you simply don't know a good movie even when you've watched it twice.
