Review: I got to rent this movie (for free, thankfully) a few days ago. This has to be the most boring John Wayne movie I've ever seen, and I've seen many! There's no plot, so for over two hours not much happens. Red Buttons is a typically unfunny early 60's comic and just gets worse as the movie drags on. The accents of the international cast are distracting and some are unbelivable. John Wayne was just to old to play the romantic leading man part and it shows in this movie. Half of the scenes in Hatari could've been cut out and nothing would be missed. Watch this on TV if your dying to see it but don't spend any money buying or renting it!

Review: I love John Wayne movies like "The Searchers", "Man Who Shot Liberty Valance", "The Shootist", "Red River", "Sons of Katie Elder", & too many others to list, but this movie is just boring. The most interesting parts of the movie are the shots of the wild animals, but if you've seen ANY National Geographic documentaries on PBS, then you've seen more exciting footage of wild animals (and better cinematography!) When they're not catching animals, the movie tries to be funny, but it's dumb (maybe if you think Donovan's Reef is funny, then you might think this is also--they're both that outdated early 60's style comedy, which to me is predictable & boring--"North to Alaska" was a much funnier Wayne movie.) I watched only about half of this movie, mainly due to John Wayne keeping my interest, but I had to stop because even the Duke couldn't rescue this movie.

Review: I love to watch movies with animals and when I happened across this movies years ago, I absolutely loved it! I'm a huge John Wayne fan and feel he did a great job in this movie. I am 30 and have seen it probably ten times and never get tired of it. Very entertaining.

Summary: How times have changed!
Review: I ran across this movie by accident on late nite TV -- and I loved it! Hatari is East Africa 40 years ago. There's no plot to speak of. John Wayne heads a team that chases down and catches animals to sell to zoos. They carry guns -- but they don't shoot anything; they smoke and drink to excess and eat lots of fatty foods (crab cakes fried in antelope fat!); they drive old beat-up jeeps and land rovers and they don't wear seatbelts -- and when they roll a jeep they pick everybody up and dust them off instead of calling a doctor (or a lawyer); the men are dumb and tough and lovable and honest and the women are smart and competent and sexy and honest -- and they don't have to prove anything to anybody. There's no way you could make this movie now. These guys lasso real animals -- giraffes and rhinos and zebras -- and wrestle them to the ground and put them in cages. The animals were probably not amused. But Hatari was politically correct in its day. Wayne's team includes a German, a Frenchman, an American Indian, a Spaniard, and an Italian femme fatale and they all get along pretty well. The Africans in the movie are called boys and there's not a hint that they might prefer to be called something else, like Mr. or Sir.
The scenery is marvelous, the photography fabulous, the music cute, the comedy stupid, the love scenes corny, and the animal capture scenes are fascinating. So this is how zoos get their animals.... Hatari is an idealized Africa of Bwanas and boys. Today, I suppose we're safer, happier, healthier, etc., but living in the shadow of Kilimanjaro and chasing animals around sure looks like a lot of fun.

Summary: Delightful!
Review: I remember this film so well! I never failed to see a new John Wayne movie and this one became a real favorite of mine. It was visually beautiful, raucous fun and funny, often exciting and lightly romantic, as well. The genre was refreshing at the time and will surely hold up well as one of Wayne's best films. Red Buttons is also wonderful in this film. The soundtrack is a true classic and the "elephant" music will be immediately recognizable, even today. "Hatari" is a Must for any DVD Library.

Summary: A helluva good time!!
Review: I'm a huge fan of John Wayne and I'll never get tired of him, but I must admit it was nice to see him take off those cowboy boots and hat for once. This hillarious comedy-adventure by director Howard Hawks has great preformances by all involved. The African surroundings are really cool. There isn't any real plot and the pacing is sort of slow, but it still by all means delivers the goods. However, it does have a few minor flaws. The animal chasing sequences, though beautifully photographed, do tend to get old fairly quickley (by the fourth or fifth time, your eyes just wander off or you simply groan). And the last 20 minutes or so seem just a wee-bit too sentimental (or maybe melodramatic is the word). But in a 2-1/2 hour movie, it doesn't affect the movie all that much; in fact, hardly at all. If you're a Wayne fan, or even if you're not, "Hatari!" is a must-see. I loved it!

Summary: A great action film
Review: If you are a John Wayne fan and want a break from his usual western, this is the video to buy. You can tell he loves Africa and being around African big game...it shows in his face and his manner. And he's surrounded by a very capable supporting cast...Red Buttons and Elsa Martinelli are fantastic. The scenery is breathtaking and the action shots are superb....especially chasing the rhinos and the cape buffalo who give the game hunters quite a fight. I also think Howard Hawks used some interesting techniques to get honest reactions from the actors....some of the scenes had to been a surprise to Wayne and Martinelli! The movie has something for everyone.

Review: It is a shame that you don't have this video on PAL system for those who don't use NTSC. This title is not on sale in Europe. Any suggestion?
