Summary: Excellant
Review: Great treatment of a great movie. As mentioned below one small line was left out for reasons i cant imagine but in fact i would not have noticed if i hadnt read his review. Great sound and picture quality earn this movie 10 stars if available. Perhaps the best of the western genre, Shane never looked better. The scenery is magnificent.

Summary: Shane, the movie
Review: This is the best western movie I have seen and I'm 62 and love western movies. The acting was outstanding, and the setting is terrific. The entire story kept me glued to the screen! I felt every member of the cast was outstanding and did a fine job. The way the story developed, unfolded and went to its conclusion made this film really terrific. There were really a fine group of actors selected for the film. The gunfight in this movie, and the way it unfolded, is by far the best in any western I've ever seen. I could not rank it any higher for setting, action, story, excitement and entertainment. This is by far my favorite western movie. I get the video out and watch it a number of times throughout the year!

Summary: great morality play
Review: This is a great morality play and as such it is possible to ritualize the scenes. The first great western to be made. I saw it when it first came out and it was new ground for a western. When Jack Palance shot Elisha Cook the noise rang through the theater. This is in my view is not only the greatest western but the greatest film of all time. Music was great, no weak spots. Every part is excellently played.

Summary: This is a great Western
Review: This film has inspired every Western since. It is an all time classic. This is a smaller budget Western with a less known star then the Duke. Clint Eastwood's Pale Rider, is a remake to almost every point of this film. Shane holds a place in the hearts of many Western fans, as well as many film fans in general. It is one of the top American films of all time. The DVD is a beautiful and worthy edition of this classic. If you collect Westerns, this is as important, and needed as "High Noon" and "The Wild Bunch". Paramount: great job on restoring this Western masterpiece!

Summary: Shane`s the man!
Review: The passing years can`t take the glory from this simple, yet complicated tale.
The story of the loner who fights injustice and cruelty with his gun,his conscience and his courage has been told a thousand times since the story of "Shane" was filmed, but it still shines because of the honesty of this production, and because of the actors and actresses who display this honesty in their wonderful portrayals of the characters.
The story is a simple one,but a complicated one as well-the pain of the passing of an entire world and its men, like Shane himself,is many-sided and long-lasting. But its message-do everything you can for others, you may never get the chance again-
is also part of the sweet simplicity which wins our hearts over and over again.
Watch this film, you won`t be disappointed.

Summary: DVD & Film Specific Review
Review: A short review of in my opinion THE GREATEST WESTERN, taking note of some other reviews:

* 1stly, the representation of violence has a distinctive verisimilitude, so criticisms about the depictions of conflict are somewhat unfair. For eg, Elisha Cook Jr being thrown back in his gunfight with Jack Palance may not be ballistically correct -but the sense of impact and untold damage to the human body is ideally conveyed.

* 2ndly, the DVD itself has an outstanding commentary, contrary to some opinions, especially important as it is done by the best remaining participants on the film. If the filmmaker were alive, we would expect a commentary from him - but this is as close as we can get, and one must appreciate the content, although not always scene specific. For instance, referral to archival notes from the director.
(The problem with commentaries is a studio marketing one, in that DVDs should have scene specific commentary or general commentary noted on the packaging).

SO IF YOU LIKE THE FILM, YOU WILL LIKE THE DVD.....

Summary: A timeless classic that you can watch over and over
Review: I first watched Shane 20 years ago and marveled at the attention to detail and character development. As the movie opens , you are immediately captivated by the Starretts and the mysterious Shane and equally repulsed by the Ryker brothers and their hired henchmen. The supporting cast is in my opinion perfectly cast and their direction is flawless. That this movie had six Academy Awards nominations and only won one in the category of Best Color Photography still amazes me. If you had to choose the best Western ever made, this is the one.
My only complaint on the DVD is the removal of little Joey's last spoken words in the movie " Bye Shane !" as Shane rides out of the valley.

Summary: As American as baseball and apple pie.
Review: Many people will lay claim to the fact that "The Searchers" is the greatest western ever filmed, but it cannot compete with "Shane" for two reasons. One, "Shane" utilizes superior character development in the story. Everyone of the main characters in the movie creates their own relationship with the viewer and Brandon DeWilde gives perhaps the greatest performance by a child actor in a dramatic role ever filmed. Secondly, "Shane" is guaranteed to produce an emotional response that John Ford would kill for. The critics can cite the technical brilliance of "The Searchers", But I'll take the common sense brilliance of "Shane" every day.

Summary: THE BEST
Review: The best sorry Wayne fans i rate this as the best western ever made.Alan Ladd at his best sadly it was all downhill for him after that until The Carpetbaggers and you can see him step up on a box a time or to. Jack Palance or Walter Jack as he was known then brilliant as Wilson. Even the dog walks out of the saloon when he walks in to drink his coffee from a dirty cup. Jean Arthur in her last movie. Van Heflin who was to repeat a similar role in 3-10 To Yuma and of course Brandon De Wilde who sadly was to lose his life at 30. Anyone who is a fan of westerns buy it on D V D its stunning. The quality is amazing. Since turning to D V D i have been so impressed with the quality of some transfers but this is the best i have ever seen. Now off to watch it again.

Director George Stevens' legendary rendition of the archetypal Western myth earned 6 Academy Award nominations, and made Shane one of the timeless classics of American cinema. Based on Jack Schaefer's novel, the story brings Alan Ladd, a drifter and retired gunfighter, to the assistance of a homestead family terrorized by an aging cattleman and his hired gun. In fighting the last, decisive battle, Shane sees the end of his own way of life. Mysterious, moody and atmospheric, the film is enhanced by the intense performances of its splendid cast.Later a brief t.v series and also Arthur's last film.
