Rating: Summary: one for the ages Review: City Lights is a masterpiece that will be seen as long as humans are around. It is Shakespearian in its scope (comedy, tragedy, pathos, absurdist, surreal, realistic.) The tramp falls in love with a blind flower girl and becomes entwined with the on-again, off-again friendship of a rich drunk. And yes, the ending is unbelieveably moving and powerful. One for the ages, as Orson Welles so rightly noted.
Rating: Summary: What an ending! Review: Other than the unforgettable and unrevealable ending, this dramatic film is both funny and, not to me, but hearttouching. He plays the role as a tramp who meets with a drunk millionaire who tries to commit suicide. Only when he's drunk do they become friends. Chaplin also meets with a blind girl and they somehow fall in love with each other. He desperately tries to find money to help the girl pay for her rent and cure her blindness. So he first tries cleaning up after horses. Then he trise boxing, but that didn't go too well. But when his drunk friend gives him $1,000, he wakes up and has no idea who Chaplin is. Chaplin takes th money and runs to the girl and leaves town, but then meets up with her in an unforgetable way.

Rating: Summary: City Lights - Overstepping the mawk factor Review: The chap who reviewed Dickens's "The Old Curiosity Shop" by challenging his readers to read the chapter on the death of Little Nell while keeping a straight face, would have reviewed "City Lights". The greatest film comedian of them all has often been criticised for sentimentality(particularly by English critics, who view sentiment as a failing rather than as life-enhancing). In this movie they may have a point. Of his full length features it is the only weak one until the decline into Limelight, King in New York et al.The address below might indicate I'm English. Forget it, I'm Irish.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Movie Review: This is the third Chaplin movie that I have seen (After "Modern Times" and "The Great Dictator") and is close to being his best ("Modern Times" I found to be just a bit funnier). In this 1931 masterpiece, Chaplin's little tramp falls in love with a blind flower girl. The girl assumes that he is a rich man. Chaplin starts a rather hilarious friendship with a millionaire. But the millionaire only remembers Chaplin when he is drunk. When sobered up, he assumes he's just another bum. Chaplin has various misadventures, including a job as a pooper-scooper and a very funny boxing match. However, the most known part of the movie is the touching, sentimental ending where the flower girl regains her sight and sees Chaplin for the first time. Unfortunately, as my brother so bluntly pointed out, this is a silent movie. And, regardless of how great it is, how many people nowadays (Particularly teenagers) would pass up "American Pie" for this?
Rating: Summary: Chaplin and Love Review: City Lights finds Chaplin finding love. City lights is insteresting because his other work highlight his comic abilities like Gold Rush or his political views like Modern Time and Great Dictator, City Light finds Chaplin finding love in a really great comedy.
Rating: Summary: The best movie of all time! Review: In my opinion, this is simply the best movie ever made. The underlying theme is about loving someone by making great personal sacrifices ("giving till it hurts.") Yet it's not preachy; it's hilarious. Chaplin perfected the art of moving people to tears and to laughter at virtually the same time. I still get choked up just thinking about this movie. It is one of the first Chaplin movies I ever saw, and it made me a lifelong fan. I have seen all of his films now, but none can quite equal this masterpiece. This is a must-see movie!
Rating: Summary: My favorite comedy Review: This film has my vote for greatest comedy of all time. If you've never seen a Charlie Chaplin film, or if you simply want to see the best, see this as soon as possible! The end still brings a tear to my eye.
Rating: Summary: A MASTERPIECE FROM 1931 Review: As a challenge to the talkies, it wasn't very important. There is a bit at the beginning that burlesques the kind of sound that used to come from the screen while the mechanism of sound reproduction was in its earliest state of imperfection. This is a delightful film, not Chaplin's very best; but in its day, considered far ahead of any other funny man's best - and for that very reason, I give it 5 stars. There is nothing in it that quite approaches the gorgeous pantomime of the sermon in the THE PILGRIM nor does it evoke such yells of laughter as some of THE GOLD RUSH. It's almost too carefully done, and some of the gags have lost their old element of surprise. There is the Chaplin touch, of course, but it takes a pretty loyal Chaplin fan not to complain when two years of more of production yielded so many worn-out incidents. From the production standpoint, this picture was one of Chaplin's smoothest and handsomest, but it lost something of the old-time dash for that very reason. The acting of the subsidiary roles is excellent, but unfortunately, the pathos in CITY LIGHTS is frequently sentimental and mawkish. Harry Myers and Hank Mann give comic performances that would steal scene after scene from almost anyone but Chaplin. The delicate and lovely Virginia Cherrill, who plays the blind girl who wins the little tramp's heart was once briefly married to Cary Grant in the early thirties.
