Summary: ONLY IN WIDESCREEN - DON'T BUY THIS ONE!
Review: Great film, beyond a mere 5 stars, but the cropped video presentation sucks. Absolutely not worth one cent of your money until it comes out in widescreen. If it's one of your favorites you probably have no choice but to settle for this one, but it's just a shadow of its former self. Try to find a used copy for a couple bucks if you can.

Summary: Moviemaking at its finest
Review: I can only hope this movie is released on DVD at some point so it can be viewed as it was originally shown. A remastered 35mm print is currently playing in San Francisco and I saw it today. Incredible! Bernard Hermann's score is awesome. The dialogue is witty. And the action is breathtaking.

Summary: The Prototypical "Action" Movie
Review: As the first true "action" movie, one might argue that "North by Northwest" has a lot to answer for. Let's face it--many of the conventions Hitchcock uses here have been used and re-used by scores of wannabe directors since the movie's 1958 release. The falsely-accused man ("The Fugitive," "The Negotiator,"). The mysterious blonde with ambiguous loyalties ("Into the Night," "Snake Eyes", "Chinatown"). The lone hero with an incredible serendipity factor ("Die Hard," "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure"). The famous backdrops (every single James Bond movie except "License to Kill"). Why do we find these old chestnuts so compelling, time after time? Perhaps because they were once done so well...On a side note, I do believe this movie contains just about the most romantic three minutes in movie history, during the scene in the train compartment. Notice how their hands are always in the shot? All in all, this movie represents one of the three best ways you can spend two hours. I forget what the other two are.

Summary: A great movie worth seeing
Review: This is without a doubt the best film Alfred Hitchcock did. It has almost every element a movie can have, and a diverse set of characters and locations. It is suspense the whole way through, even the 6th time seeing it.

Review: Top-flight film, unacceptable video. No other film I know suffers more in its video presentation. NxNW MUST be seen in its original widescreen aspect ratio. Please!

Review: Check out the scene where Eva Marie Saint "shoots" Cary Grant in the busy dining room. Right before she pulls the trigger, a young boy in the background puts his hands over his ears to muffle the noise he knew was coming. Guess the editors missed that one.

Summary: You are invited into Mr. R. O. Thornhill's own private Hell!
Review: Here is Roger Thornhill, a type-A yuppie, 30 years ahead of his time. Caught up in another man's problems, his mistake? He is in the wrong place at the wrong time. With nowhere to hide, he can only run. We run with him, wanting to shout to the screen what we know that he doesn't. In what I believe is one of the greatest and most disturbing scenes of all time, (Yes, he was able to work my emotions like putty in his hands.) Roger Thornhill is in a crowded auction--completly safe from the bad guys throughout the room. Only to find himself alone, on a lonely streach of road, where he is in a true run for his life! Only Hitchcock could have pulled that off. Today's movies pale in comparison.

Summary: They don't make them like this anymore. Why not?
Review: This is my favorite Alfred Hitchcock film (Rear Window runs neck to neck with it). In my opinon, Hitchcock is one of our greatest directors. His films were soooo sexy without anyone taking a stitch of clothing off and created great tension without all the gore of today's films. There will never be anyone who can be quite like Cary Grant in this type of role. He and Eva Marie Saint were a terrific combo!

Summary: I was an Extra on the Set
Review: YES, I was, and it was great watching Eva Marie Saint and Cary Grant in the middle of Grand Central Station in New York City as they shot a very brief scene in the station and all of us walked on and off the set. I guess we did it about 20 times. Then I had to wait for the film release which was perhaps a year later. What a bummer - I was cut in the production print. And that finished my movie career. Mr. Hitchcock was very quiet on set, and Ms. Saint was great with all the people around her. And the film was one of Hitchcock's best. Spend the money on this oldie but goodie

Summary: One of the ten best movies of all time
Review: Cary Grant says, "I'll bet you could tease a man half to death without even trying... so stop trying." What else do you need to know? Drunk driving, stabbings at the UN, romance on the train, crop dusting "where there ain't no crops" the chase scene atop Mt Rushmore, and of course the final shot of the train going into the tunnel. Hitchcock at his best, and a great score, too.
