Summary: Nicely Done Old English Mystery
Review: Barry (leslie Fenton), an American who on the channel ferry to Dover rescues very pretty Julie, (Muriel Evans), from the clutches of a goon on the ferry. A violent one at that. Despite being rescued by the hero, she refuses to give him her name. Barry puts off returning to the states so as to find Julie in London. The lovely Muriel Evans looks quite a bit like Jean Harlow.

Barry is called to a solicitor's office where he is told that an unknown and eccentric uncle bequeathed an ancient manor house to him. But on arriving to take possession he's driven off by dogs, the butler and a gun-wielding older guy. And, wouldn't you know it, Julie is residing at this manor.

Now barry must resolve the mystery of the House, Julie, and the gangsters pursuing him. Not truly an "old Dark House" film since most of the film is spent with Barry trying to GET IN the house in the first place.

House of Secrets" is interesting, the dialog is snappy with lots of current day (copyright 1936) slang, the acting is good, the sets are dark & spooky. the actors bring some genuine life to their roles and its quite well done.

Review: This is one of the better films of its type I've seen. It moves along at a brisk pace and the script is witty. The story is about an American guy who goes to London to check out an old manor, "The Hawk's Nest", that was left to him by his dead uncle. He finds strange people living there (including the babe he met on the boat over) and sinister goings on before he is forcibly evicted. The police are not much help to him and seem to be evasive. Throw in secret passages, a pirate's treasure, a government conspiracy, some American gangsters, and you've got a pretty lively "old, dark house" flick happening here. The Alpha dvd is the usual standard. Looks like it was mastered from an old VHS somebody bought from Sinister Cinema or Something Weird Video. Definately NOT what dvd is all about, but if you don't mind VHS quality, recorded from an old 16mm print with a few scratches and the odd splice, you're in for a good time if you're in the mood for a creaky old mystery thriller.
