Summary: BLUE HAWAII
Review: Originally titled "Beach Boy", this musical comedy became the most successful film of Elvis Presley's career. Elvis stars as Chad Gates, whose wealthy family owns a successful pineapple plantaion in Hawaii. In the opening scenes Chad has just returned from the Army. His parents are eager for him to pursue the family business. Chad chooses instead to work as a guide in the tourist agency where his girlfriend Maile (Joan Blackman), is also employed. His new vocation not only allows him to use his knowledge of the islands' most beautiful sites but also affords him enough time to cavort on the beach with his native Hawaiian buddies. Tension mounts as Sara Lee (Angela Lansbury), Chad's blue-blooded mother, objects to his job, his girlfriend, and his beach-loving friends. Chad eventually proves successful in his new vocation and finally wins the approval of his family by marrying Maile and making plans to open his own tourist agency.

Though a very good muscial comedy and hugely successful at the box office, Blue Hawaii sealed Elvis's fate in terms of his film career. Though Flaming Star and Wild In The Country had not lost money at the box-office and were better films, they did not generate the profit as this film had done. The Colonel used the box-office grosses of Blue Hawaii to convince Elvis that his fans preferred him in musical comedies.

It's interesting to note that Juliet Prowse had originally been slated to play the part of Maile Duval but was replaced with the lesser known Joan Blackman due to ludicrous demands made to Fox Studios to accept the part.

Summary: OUTSTANDING ELVIS DVD
Review: Paramount had done a terrific job on the Elvis "Blue Hawaii" DVD. At last we get get to see the beautiful letterbox image in all of it's Panavision glory. The color is dark and rich. And they have done wonders with the sound by turning a mono movie into a partially stereo movie. The music tracks have been redone to make it almost sound like true stereo. The Hawaii location photography has never looked better and this movie also serves as a great commerical for the Hawaii Department of Tourism.

This movie is the prototype of most of the Elvis movies that were to follow. Some Elvis fans do not like these formula type of Elvis movies, preferring the earlier ones where he was more rock 'n' roll and raw. But Blue Hawaii is very entertaining and it features probably the best bunch of Elvis songs in any of his movies. A great supporting cast helps a lot especially Angela Lansbury as Elvis' wacky mother. (Trivia fans take note: When this movie was filmed, Elvis was 26 years old and Lansbury was 36 years old.)

I strongly recommend this DVD to all Elvis fans. And if you are not an Elvis fan, buy this DVD and you might become one quickly.

Summary: This is my favorite Elvis Movie...So Far
Review: So, I haven't seen very many Elvis movies but this is the film that peaked my interest in watching the King's movies in the first place. He is truly mesmerizing. The scenery, music, and costumes in this movie are kitchy but perfect. It harkens back to a simplier time and place, which makes it a great counterbalance to all the crime dramas I love.

You might want to wait and catch on cable, but if you want a chance to sit back and enjoy a great, simple, colorful, and innocent movie, go ahead and splurge on this DVD.

Summary: Gates of Hawaii
Review: The perfect movie for most fans.
Great songs, pretty girls, comedy galore, hanging with the guys and spanking the bad girl.
What more could anyone want? Fun for the whole family.

Summary: Paradise, Hollywood Style
Review: THE quintessential Presley film: bkini-clad girls, tropical locations, easy listening songs mixed into a light frothy mixture for easy consumption.

After the box office disappointments of the dramatic "Flaming Star" and "Wild in the Country" Elvis (reluctantly) returned to the successful formula adopted in G.I. Blues, and had a worldwide smash, cementing the musical-comedy path which his film career doggedly followed for another eight years.

The film isn't a bad one. The comedy playing by Angela Lansbury and Roland Winters is nicley turned; Elvis sings well, even on the lesser numbers, while the scenery steals every scene. A pleasant 100 minute-long Technicolour dream.

Summary: Rock-a-hula Rocks!
Review: This is one of my favorites because it shows the humerous side to Elvis. He wasn't that great of an actor, but he had his moments. The music is good in this one and the co-stars deliver wonderful performances.
