Rating: Summary: The Best Movie Musical Review: I thought this was the best movie musical ever made! I was never really into movie musicals only live broadways but when I saw this it absolutely touched my heart. Richard Beymer (Tony)and Natalie Wood (Maria) fit perfectly for the roles that they played. George Chakiris (Bernardo) played his character so smoothly and Rita Moreanu (Anita) always plays her part beautifully! Anyone who has not watched this should definatly picked it up!!
Rating: Summary: GREAT DANCING! NATALIE HITS THE ROOF! Review: This has wonderful dancing and the cast has great actors and dancers. Natalie is amazing, there are not enough words to describe her.
Rating: Summary: Established its own genre--"Musical Tragedy". Review: Before this play hit the Broadway stage, "ne'er the twain did meet". My father only likes musicals, with their lightweight plots about "trouble in River City, with a capital T, that rhymes with P, and that stands for pool". He can't stand drama--it bores him him to the point of anguish. This movie plays to two different audiences--musical comedy fans like my dad, and urban drama fans who had loved "Hell On Frisco Bay" and "The Naked City". Its victory (illustrated by its Oscar sweep the year it came out) was that neither half of its audience was put off by qualities aimed at the other half, or at least not enough to make them vote with their feet. Today, with political theorists squaring off over the role of social workers and psychologists in the criminal justice system, the song "Gee Officer Krupke" sounds as pungently relevant as a Neil Young number. Written during the late '50s, this song has turned out to be prophecy masquerading as entertainment.
Rating: Summary: A "Wise" Story Review: West Side Story remains as the one of the greatest musicals of all time. This movie was nicely choreographed as well as directed. West Side Story is definitely Robert Wise's best film, which ranked #41 in AFI's 100 greatest movies. This is certainly a musical at it's finest. One hitch however is that the movie drags with it's dialogues, making the scenes boring to watch. Another glitch in the film is the acting. It seems that the entire movie was filmed in a theatre, making it appear it was a play, with characters that have to know their lines. But I guess that what makes West Side Story such a unique film. Up to now, it's still a great movie with it's legendary songs that ranks up there with other great musicals like The Sound of Music and Singin' in the Rain.
Rating: Summary: Great Story! Review: West Side Story is one of the rare movie musicals that doesn't grow old. And to the musical-hating Brooklynite who screamed about all that "dancing and singing", what does he think he was in for? a horror movie? Did you really know so little about this much hyped movie, when it came out in l962, that you didn't think it would have any of those horrible song and dance numbers? You've been watching too many Bowery Boy flicks. You probably thought the movie "Grease" would be about a hog packing plant, where they made sausage. For someone who can't tell by the ads and word-of-mouth that West Side Story is a musical, then you must have a strange way of choosing your movies. (i.e., Gone With the Wind was about a hurricane that hit Georgia and Alien was about an illegal alien from Cuba).
Rating: Summary: "WHEN LOVE COMES SO STRONG, THEIR IS NO RIGHT OR WRONG" Review: To the viewer from Brooklyn, NY. Please tell me you're a grease-a-holic. I don't no about you, but when I was in high school, I never saw any students break out into a song-and-dance number. This sort of corn-u-copia is what makes the musical a musical. Obviously, the music is what makes this film great (plus, of course, the dramatic climax). This film tells us why Leonard Bernstein was the greatest classical composer of his time. The team of Bernstein and Sondheim puts to shame Rogers and Hammerstein. No offense R & H. But really! I originally saw this movie in a theater when I was 13 or 14. I knew I was watching something great. I immediately went out and purchased the LP soundtrack. The only soundtrack I have ever purchased. The music ....... Compare "Somewhere" with Romeo and Juliets " A Time for Us". They are hauntingly beautiful. I watched in awe the quintet number. It was breathtaking! The scene at the gym when tony and maria saw each other for the first time, oblivious to any one else around as the other characters faded into the background. The oscar winning performances of Rita Moreno and George Chakiris was well deserved. The greatest musical ever filmed!
Rating: Summary: I LOVE WEST SIDE STORY! I LOVE TONY! Review: This movie is the best movie I have EVER seen and probably the best movie I EVER WILL see!!! I live and breathe this movie! I love Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer in this movie...I don't CARE what anyone else says! Anyway, as you may already know, this movie is based on William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, only it's set in 1950's New York. Two gangs hate each other...even to the point of death. BUT....two people, a young man and woman, fall in love despite their differences. The young woman is Puerto Rican, the young man, Anglo-American. The first thing they see is each other, and the ONLY thing they see is each other. Their love is so strong that even death wouldn't part them.Oh....and did I mention I LOVE TONY!!!!! HE'S SO GORGEOUS!!! And he's so romantic and wonderful and kind and I just want him all to myself! I want to eat him up! I swear I fall in love with him every time I see him! He's truly something. I think that's one of the main reasons I love this movie! I absolutely love this movie. It's so wonderful. The music is full of splendor: I will never stop singing anything that is West Side Story. I will NEVER stop watching, living, or breathing West Side Story. I recommend this movie to anyone who is in love or to people who might have grudges toward each other. It will truly tell you that you don't have to hate. You don't need it at all. All that really matters is the love to strengthen and protect everything you have, for if not, it will all shatter before your very eyes.
Rating: Summary: Boy, boy, crazy boy... Review: I love this movie!!!!! It's so good, and it's funny. My friends and I sing the songs--especially "Cool" and "Officer Krupke" all of the time.
Rating: Summary: It is an art that must be treasured Review: Yes there is dancing that in regular movies and theatrical settings it would never occur. But it is used in an artisitic point of view to suggest what life was like in the 1950's according to this plot. The Music is great, the ending is the climax not the middle, and you are left with a sence of hope and dispair. Buy it or rent it if you are ready to watch something higher and more intelligant than the normal programing
Rating: Summary: OH NO!!! THEY ARE ALSO DANCING!!! Review: I liked the silliness of the characters and the unrealistic setting of New York before they started to...sing! This musical is pretty bad. I really can't see how anybody in their right mind can enjoy this torture with horrible singing and uncalled for choreography. WHY DID THEY HAVE TO MAKE THEM SING AND DANCE??? What's the point of that??? If I want to see something of that sort I'll go see it on Brodway in a theatre. Skip it, get something from this century without peoplw starting to dance in the middle of a gangs confrontations.
