Rating: Summary: how can you hate it? Review: Oh my goodness. I cannot, I repeat, cannot believe that people hate this movie. I really can't. I saw it, I watched it forty more times, and I STILL LOVE IT. People say it's corny and has no content. NO CONTENT??!!! Please. Look a little deeper. This film is all about family and morals and values. How much more content do you want? You have no idea how many values and morals I have picked up from this movie. Not to mention the fact that "My Favorite Things" has yet to fail in making me feel better. How can you say this is corny? It's a beautiful film. The scenery, the MUSIC, the content, it's all beautiful (especially the music). To quote Shirley Jones: "The musicals had a good, happy feeling, saying that the world is a better place. They say it's not reality, but who cares? There's too much reality these days." So true. The storyline is so beautiful. Maybe it's not perfectly real, but it really can cheer you up. Maybe if we were all like the von Trapp family, this world would be a much better place. Oh, and if you think this story has no content, I suggest you read Maria von Trapp's autobiography about her and her family. That should give some insight into just how wonderful her family was, and the values and morals this film gives to us. Not to mention the acting in this film. Christopher Plummer captures the essence of a strict, retired sea captain perfectly. And Julie Andrews. Her voice is absolutely beautiful and never fails. And her presence as Maria is wonderful. She has the humor, the voice, the happiness, she just fits the role perfectly. Just please, look a little deeper before you criticize this film as having no content. Please. It's absolutely wonderful and mesmorizing if you look properly.
Rating: Summary: The Sound Of Julie Andrews Review: I didn't care for Julie Andrews performance. Only joking! How can anybody fault it. her voice is the best i have ever heard any woman come out with, and the acting us oscar worthy. That year she lost out to Julie Christe in Darling, HOW! I have viewed both actresses performances and Julie trounced Julie Christies a mile of. THE HILLS ARE ALIVE WITH THE SUPERCALIFRAGALISTICEXPIALIDOUCIOUS SOUND OF DAME JULIE ANDREWS
Rating: Summary: A Classic Movie That Somehow Got Better With Age Review: This movie was considered essential viewing when I was growing up. I must have seen it at least a dozen times, and listened to the soundtrack even more often. Needless to say, at one point I got so fed up of it that I would have pulled out my own teeth rather than watch it again. Then along comes the DVD version, and also my (now) two year old son, and my husband felt it a fatherly responsibility to begin the mandatory viewing of one of the best loved films of all time. Watching it again with a fresh perspective, I have found that this movie somehow got better with age. The simple story line, the subtle development of the relationships between the military-trained disciplinarian Baron Georg Von Trapp, the flighty convent reject Maria, and the experienced woman of the world Baroness, proves that you can have romance, innocence, cunning and the pursuit of true love without the need for profanity, gratuitous carnality and actors mumbling long unintelligible soliloquies that have taken over in recent times. Other than that, the songs, the children, and the breathtaking scenery all contribute to a wonderful viewing and listening experience. I have to grudgingly agree with my parents - this movie is mandatory viewing for all ages - just don't overdo it.
Rating: Summary: I like it...I really do... Review: Say what you want, this film is nothing less than entertaining. I took issue with the 1965 Oscars for giving the Director award to Robert Wise (I thought David Lean did a great job with "Zhivago"), but, as years go by, I find that this is the film I prefer to watch. This was the better film. It won the Oscar for best Picture, and I think that the big controversy is that "Zhivago" (an epic), "Darling" (innovative debut by John Schlesiger), "Ship of Fools" (brilliant Stanley Kramer adaptation), and "A Thousand Clowns" (brilliant, free-spirited romp), were perhaps more worthy, in respect to "worldly" matters. (Pauline Kael called it "The sound of mucus") So, why aren't most of those others available on DVD? This is a true story (basically) and is just as important; unfortunately, it was done with humor and lots of zest. I guess some take issue with that...And, say what you want about Julie Andrews...she still has the best voice of anyone. Sorry if you don't agree, but this film is quite simply...ENJOYABLE!
Rating: Summary: Amazing, Romantic, and Beautiful! Review: Wow, this is one of the best movies I have ever seen. My family and I have been watching this one for years. It is truly one of my favorites. If you love a good romantic movie then this is for you. I usually hate musicals but this one is SOOO good!! Julie Andrews and Christopher Plumber did an excellent job in this movie. Movies from the 60's usually aren't the best but this one is different. This is a great movie to watch on a family night. It's definitely a must see!!
Rating: Summary: It's worth tracking down over the single disc version. Review: In general, I hate musicals. But there's always been something about The Sound of Music that I cherish. Perhaps it's because it's based on a true story, or perhaps it's because the musical numbers are so well written that I actually enjoyed them. Either way, it's one of the very few musicals that I appreciate. The 5 Star edition DVD, while somewhat hard to track down, is definately worth the hunt. Don't sissy out and buy that crummy never-should-have-been-released single disc edition. This is the one to get. You get hours of in-depth history about the real-life Von-Trapp family, as well as alot of in-depth information about the Sound of Music musical, from it's birth as a broadway musical to it's silver screen debute. It's definately worth all the trouble it takes to find a copy.
Rating: Summary: One Of The True Masterpieces Of The Motion Picture! Review: THE SOUND OF MUSIC is by far the greatest musical of all time, and is among the most beloved films ever made. I have yet to meet one person who does not possess an intimate love for this film. I mean, I'm sitting in class, and no matter how many people are reciting rap or pop, no matter how tough they may try to act, whenever someone mentions The Sound Of Music, the whole class gets into an uproarious chorus of "THE HILLS ARE AAALIIIIIVE.........", or "WHEN THE DOG BITES, WHEN THE BEE STINGS........." This 1965 Best Picture winner is truly a miracle in this sense; the film is, quite literally, timeless. But the film is not only so remembered for its music; sure, that's what you watched it for when you were four or six. Sure, you memorized every single little lyric without even knowing what the heck it all means. That is certainly why I used to love THE SOUND OF MUSIC. I recently purchased this deluxe DVD after not seeing the movie for years, and I must say that I never could've imagined all that the film possessed besides music. The acting, the storyline, the gorgeous scenery.......everything about this movie is P-E-R-F-E-C-T. Whatever you do, don't cheat yourself into buying the single-disc edition that's in stores these days (and heaven forbid the full-screen version!) Even though this two-disc Five Star Collection DVD is out of stock on this website, it's worth the extra money. The audio is fine, but the video is strange; most of the time it is very clear, but some times it appears blurry and hard to focus on. However, the real reason to buy this 2-disc set is for the extras. The making-of documentary is one of the very best I've ever seen! It may be 90 minutes, but like the actual movie itself, it's so entertaining that it just speeds right by! The menus are beautiful, too (like all of Fox's Five Star Collection DVDs). CONCLUSION: One of history's most timeless classics on one spectacular DVD release. This is one item you cannot afford to miss out on!
Rating: Summary: The best musical EVER!!! Review: This musical was absolutely fantastic! Julie Andrews did the best acting job in her career closely conflicting with mary Poppins. Christopher Plummer did not get a very good chance at acting since we didn't see him happy most of the time. The children were great.
Rating: Summary: Warning to DVD-Rom viewers Review: This DVD requires access to the internet if you are attempting to view the movie on a computer with a DVD-Rom drive. Presumably this is to download something from the internet to make the experience "more enjoyable"?!? I have attempted to contact Fox about this problem and was told it isn't a problem to them. Consider yourself warned.
