Review: Even though I was in the musical, I still think this is one of the most boring and trite musicals ever written. The music, for the most part, is good though, so just buy the soundtrack.

Summary: Great video presentation, Sound continues to lack
Review: I have seen the musical Oklahoma many, many times. However, it has never looked so good. DVD has done wonders with stunning visuals and brilliant colors. Yet the sound for the Musical was rather dissmal. I was very disappointed. To be watching something so beautiful and to have the sound so miserable was a let down. Otherwise, it is a great movie and a DVD must have.

Summary: Rodgers and Hammerstein at their best
Review: Terrific film with unforgettable songs. Nice romantic plot that keeps things moving along. The only caveat is the long ballet scenes but they do have some great choreography. This is really a classic musical. Even kids understand it.

Summary: dvd mastering of these classic movies is a disgrace
Review: I received in one Amazon bundle four of the greatest American musicals written -- Oklahoma, Carousel, South Pacific and Gigi.Gigi is just sensational -- the anamorphic widescreen format presents a glowing, richly detailed picture. And it's great to switch to the French language option and hear the French singer Sacha Distel sing for Louis Jordan (though he's not credited). The Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals, courtesy of 20th Century Fox, are a disgrace, and not up to the quality of their VHS releases! Without anamorphic mastering, these widescreen releases lack clarity and visual punch; you end up noticing the lines on the television and groaning about the lost opportunity to present these great musicals in their highest possible quality. I suppose we'll have to wait for Fox to re-issue them anamorphically as 'special editions', and buy them all over again!

Summary: Best video version yet with fine sound...but...
Review: The reviews by others note the TODD-AO version which is a decided improvement on previous video incarnations. The sound of the musical sequences in 5.1 reprocessing is vastly superior to any of Capital's soundtrack-only versions -- better balance, more brilliant, better definition. One caveat to an otherwise wonderful DVD...the color becomes unstable a half dozen times during the production. This film was not restored in the sense that My Fair Lady (for example) was and it might have profited from that restoration. All in all, however, Oklahoma is OK!!

Summary: Widescreen TODD-AO edition definitive version
Review: The THX restored widescreen edition of OKLAHOMA! has finally reached us and thank goodness Fox used the TODD-AO original, rather than the tired CinemaScope version as their source. As noted above in an earlier review, this is far brighter with more exuberant performances. The vistas of blue sky and cloud formations are breathtaking. Here the main title is different than the Scope version, coming first, rather than after the opening cornfield sequence. There are extended scenes in the runaway carriage and round-up segments in the TODD-AO version that are not in the Scope version. A few 3-D-like effects with a lariat and a mallet here that are not in the Scope version. The Overture, Entr'Acte and Exit Music are all here. Final Eller scene different in each and Grahame's line deliveries tend to vary in each; otherwise the two are shot for shot, line for line almost identical, except for the brightness and joy of the fresh performances in the TODD-AO version. Run to buy this one.

Summary: Definitely rated my favorite musical of all.
Review: I loved this musical. Have memorized the words to the songs. Thrill to Gordon McRae's and Shirley Jone's chemistry. Love the scenery and the down hominess of the people. Ado Annie is a delight. "Jud Frye is daid" is a masterpiece. Two thumbs up for this one.

Review: This is a cowboy classic the family will not want to miss. I have seen two movies from the Rodgers & Hammerstein collection. Gordon MacRae is a wonderful singer. And I also think Shirley Jones is a wonderful singer too. And we live in all six of the R & H collection.
