Summary: THE FINEST OF ALL FIFTIES MUSICALS.
Review: Considered by many (including myself) to be one the finest musicals ever made, SINGIN' IN THE RAIN is a perennial delight for young and old alike. Based upon a catalogue of songs written by Arthur Freed and Nacio Herb Brown during the late twenties and early thirties, this delightful film spoofs the turmoils of the transition from silents to the "talkies" in the movies. Originally planned for Howard Keel, who was enormously popular at the time, it eventually shifted to accomadate the persona of Gene Kelly who also co-directed. Donald O'Connor is possibly best-remembered for his terrific song and dance solo "Make 'Em Laugh", an athletic tour-de-force - he won the Golden Globe Award in 1952 largely due to this. Nineteen year-old Debbie Reynolds was dubbed by Betty Noyes for her singing scenes and by Jean Hagen for Hagan's character Lina Lamont (for whom Debbie's character dubbed!) Generally considered as the apogee of screen musical art, its a virtually faultless film by any standards; over the years, it has surpassed AN AMERICAN IN PARIS in popularity and it is easily recognised as one of the all-time great movies. Strangely enough, when it was originally released back in 1952, it was found by some critics to be "sluggish" and "without much warmth or wit"! ............ It's terrific, folks!

Summary: Tapdancing...
Review: I like this movie because I like musical movies where
people tapdance. The people acting in this movie is Gene
Kelly, Donald O'Connor, and Debbie Reynalds. This movie is
when people are trying to make talking pictures. This
movie was really fun to watch!

Summary: One of the greatest and most likeable movies of all time.
Review: How can anyone not like "Singin' in the Rain"? Not only is it one of the greatest movies ever made, it's also one of the most entertaining and likeable movies ever made.

"Singin' in the Rain" is set in the roaring 20's, during the transition time when movies started to talk. The whole movie is just flawless from beginning to end. There just isn't a bad song, there isn't a pointless scene and there isn't a character that shouldn't be there.

The movie stars Gene Kelly as the screen star Don Lockwood, Debbie Reynolds as the dancer wanting to make it big, Donald O'Conner as Don's best friend and Jean Hagen as the dopey Lina Lamont.

Exciting, delightful and entertaining from beginning to end, "Singin' in the Rain" is one the greatest movies ever made that will never lose it's popularity or it's status.

This is what a great movie is all about.

Summary: Best Musical Ever.
Review: Even if you're the type who despises musicals, Singin' in the Rain is impossible to resist. The title sequence is truly one of the greatest scenes in movie history, and the chemistry between Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O'Connor is a joy to watch. This is one of the few musicals I would not walk away from when my mom was trying to force us to watch them as kids.

Summary: A true classic musical!
Review: This is a must see musical for the entire family. The first musical I ever saw. I would give it ten stars if I could. It's great and I highly recommend it. They sure don't make them like this anymore!

Summary: Greatest musical of all time
Review: "Singin' in the Rain" is perhaps the greatest musical ever made by Hollywood. Gene Kelly is fantastic in the title song, and Donald O'Connor is simply amazing singing and dancing to "Make 'Em Laugh." About the only bad thing I can say about it is that the film needs some restoration work. I only hope this is done, and that a special edition DVD is released with a much better print.

Summary: Great Movie, Lousy Reproduction
Review: 5 Stars for the Musical 0 Stars for the DVD conversion. I can't say enough about the movie, I've loved it for years. However, this is one of the worst presentations of a Technicolor film available. It was as though the source media was an old faded copy that had the brightness turned up and color over driven to make up for it. Some scenes had the brightness so high it was dificult to make out the facial features of a sweet Debbie Reynolds. They should have presented it faded. Seriously consider waiting for a restored version.

Summary: THE GREAT AMERICAN MUSICAL
Review: Once upon a time there was a place called HOLLYWOOD. It wasn't just a town or even an industry, it was a state of mind. They didn't call the studios Dream Factories for nothing. This film is the epitome of the musical art and craft. This is a real "Movie Movie," made entirely on the MGM lot. The real creme de la creme of MGM contributed to it's creation; produced by Arthur Freed, starring Gene Kelly (with a brilliant turn by the dazzling ,long-legged Cyd Charisse), contract players like Debbie Reynolds and Kathleen Freeman (still going strong, currently appearing on Broadway in "The Full Monty") with costumes by my favorite designer Walter Plunkett (Gone With The Wind, 7 Brides For 7 Brothers, etc). Check out the sumptuous designs for the "Beautiful Girls" number and the outrageous spider dress at the opening night party. The real lowdown is that Jean Hagen and Donald O'Connor practically steal the show from the leads in possibly the best performances of their careers. This film is pure joy. The script by Comden and Green is not only clever but actually goofs on a real period of transition of the American film from silent to talkie. It is also a brilliant job of recycling a trunkload of old songs. This happy film has the courage to do what American musicals and comedies do best: be silly and make you forget you troubles for an hour and a half. Next time you are in bed with the flu or trying to get over a miserable love affair, take a look at Singing In The Rain. It can't help but curl up the corners of your mouth and drive the clouds away.

Summary: "What a glorious feeling!"
Review: An exhilerating and fast-moving musical comedy, SINGIN' IN THE RAIN is one of MGM's best-loved musicals.

Directed by Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen, SINGIN' IN THE RAIN tells the hilarious story of what happened when Hollywood exploded with the advent of sound pictures ("Talkies").

Jean Hagen won high praise for her riotous performance as Lina Lamont, silent screen queen with the killer looks and a voice like sulphuric acid! Her voice is the main drawback for the bigwig studio producer (Millard Mitchell). Enter Kathy Seldon (Debbie Reynolds) who offers to dub Lina's dialogue and singing to save the studio from ruin.

Along the way Kathy falls for dashing leading man Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) and cavorts with his energetic best friend Cosmo Brown (Donald O'Connor).

With the songs "Fit As A Fiddle", "You Were Meant For Me", "Would You?", "Broadway Melody", "Good Mornin'", and the show-stopping Title Song.

Interestingly enough, the voice you hear when Kathy is dubbing the song for Lina, "Would You?", is actually Jean Hagen singing, NOT Debbie Reynolds!
