Summary: could have been better
Review: Seen martin lewis (one of the guys behind the making of this d.v.d.)in Chicago in August and he said since the Beatles company "Apple" does not own this film, the beatles will have nothing to do with it. That is why there are no new interviews with paul and ringo.Also, i think if Apple would have been involved, i don't think we would be seeing so many negative reviews. Look what Apple did with the Yellow Submarine D.V.D.Excellent 5.1 sound mxed at abbey road studios. The picture quality on the hard days night d.v.d. is all i can say that they did right. Please, Miramax, this is the Beatles.Hopefully, since this is a "special edition", they can right their wrongs. But i'm not holding my breath. Bummer, because this d.v.d could have been so much better. I give the movie itself a 5, the d.v.d. a 2.

Summary: THIS DVD WAS A BIG DISAPPOINTMENT
Review: Being a big Beatle fan, and a big fan of this movie, I highly anticipated the arrival of this title on DVD. The sound on this DVD is bad, there is absolutely no dynamic range. The volume level seems to hover at the same level through out the film, there is no difference in volume between the scenes when there is a quiet conversation and the scenes where the band is playing. I also own the title on laserdisc and let me tell you, the laserdisc has at least 30 db of dynamic range. While watching this film on laserdisc, you can adjust the level of playback so that the scenes where there is conversation is a comfortable 75 db, and when the band plays it jumps up to an ear thumping 105 db or more. This DVD lacks ooph, the band sounds like their playing in a box. This film deserves a better sound treatment, I highly recommend boycotting the DVD and lets wait till they release it in it's proper state.

Review: to quote John Lennon..."Tell Me Why"?
why Mira Max....did you not include the bonus features from the now highly collectable orignal DVD release of this movie? The out of print version , which was made from a remastered negative, also has a vintage interview with Richard Lester, his film "Running Jumping & Standing" with Peter Sellers, which got him this gig, a theatrical trailer and bonus "newsreel" footage of the fab four....NONE of which is on this new two disc joke. perhaps I should calm down and admit that interviews with the photographer and George Martin are nice and Klaus Voorman is fun to watch.....once. Where are the BEATLES ? there is deleted and outake material which would have been much more interesting than the endless talking heads from United Artists droning on and on about the fact that they didn't know who the Beatles were but all knew "we would make a lot of money" with this movie. Oh, and the packaging? the original DVD had the look and spirit of the original LP and movie etc, with a nice little insert with pictures.....this eco pak features four fuzzy out of focus pictures of the individual Beatles and a group shot which is equally poor in quality and no booklet. I can't believe that they couldn't find better quality photos than this....whoever organized this set must not have been alive in the 60's and really must have been on deadline....I am suprised that they didn't flop the neg on Pauls photo to have him playing right handed....that is the level of interest they seem to have displayed elsewhere. oh yeah, and 14 lousy chapters to the original 29? this reeks of doing things on the cheep...yet they rolled out the publicity campaign to hype this and smere the previous edition as inferior....HA, that is why they are fetching well over a hundred bucks a piece on the auctions...... Buy this for the movie...it is a classic...and the proper aspect ratio of 1:66 is nice, but we should hope that the fools that put this together are not involved with the follow up films.

Summary: Where is "You Can't Do That"???
Review: The stars are for the movie. Love the movie. As for release as a DVD?...1 star only. You Can't Do That has been available for quite some time and should have been included here as part of a definitive release. It is supposed to be a collectors edition after all. The failure of Miramax to include that is upsetting. Picture is fine, except some flashes and marks here and there. Could have been cleaned up a bit. But the sound...a mono mix probably would have been better. The sound is as bad as you remember. Perhaps, that is the best they could do. If so, so be it. If not, I should ask for my money back.

Summary: Disappointed!
Review: How disappointing! Unlike previous releases of this movie on VHS and DVD, this one does not use the actual stereo soundtracks for the music interludes. What you have here is enhanced mono of the songs. I'll stick with my MPI version with stereo music, thank you.

HOW??? LISTEN TO THE "ECHO" ON THE SONGS THAT ARE SUNG "LIVE" AT THE END..IS THAT NEEDED?? WHY NOT HAVE THE ORIGINAL MONO TRACK AS WELL AS THE STEREO ONE? BUT DON'T SCREW WITH IT..
MAYBE A LAUGH TRACK ON HELP????

Summary: A typical British comedy
Review: When I was a kid growing up in Germany in the late 50's, I used to see a lot of British comedies in the US Army theaters; I don't know if they made it to the US. I didn't get all of the humor, but I remember these films being uniquely humorous, particularly the "Carry On" series. When I saw "Hard Day's Night" it reminded me of these clever black & white films, which is why it is much more than a rock & roll film. The only other British rock movie I remember enjoying was the Dave Clark 5's "Having a Wild Weekend" which I recall having a sad ending at Mont St Michel in France. I'm glad HDN finally made it to video.

Summary: If You Want Great Sound..Stick with VHS
Review: My copy of A Hard Day's Night came this morning. I was very disappointed in the sound. I didn't know why; but a friend of mine from the great state of Georgia, David Powell who knows his stuff sent me information that made me realize why I was not so happy with it. "The new DVD re-release of A Hard Day's Night seems to be a controversial subject of debate on many internet forums. Let me see if I can get this right -- The movie was originally in mono. For the new DVD they've gone back to the stereo mixes of the songs to create a 5.1 surround mix. The movie's dialogue, however, is still mono, so it switches to stereo only during the featured songs. The trouble is that the DVD's 5.1 stereo mix sounds worse than the original 2 channel stereo versions of the songs. Rather than spacious, the music has evidently been compressed for this digital version. There is some talk also that certain songs, such as "Can't Buy Me Love", are actually just re-processed mono rather than true stereo. If all this sounds confusing -- it really is, the new DVD apparently uses the wrong aspect ratio for the picture!"

Summary: Where is the trailer
Review: While I love this movie in any form, I was disappointed from the LACK of any materials we have come to expect from recent dvd's- no theatrical trailer, outtakes, deleted scenes, etc. The interview disc is good, if a little long-winded, but it doesn't make up for the missing materials featuring the band and not everyone around them. I took the inclusion of such materials for granted. My mistake.

Summary: A splendid time is guaranteed for all
Review: The most fun 88 minutes in cinematic history. The Fabs at their fab-best. The video quality is terrific, the sound fantastic. All of the add-on stuff is interesting, more or less (the tailor's son??). One nit - why no outtakes? There had to be many wonderful moments of missed lines and general cutting up, if not entire scenes deleted for one reason or another (You Can't Do That, for one). No matter. Get it. And frequently gather 'round the telly for a giggle.
