Summary: No movies in this collection
Review: We tryed to watch this at christmas. It was unwatchable. Instead of getting my 13 yr. old son interested in classic Marx Brothers, it turned him off. All clips, except most of the time you are looking at a still sceensaver between clips. We couldn't get through even one dvd.

Summary: Groucho Garbage
Review: All the Marx brothers are rolling over in their grave over this collection of trash. I was hoping that this would be anything more than it is ... GARBAGE.
I bought these for my husband and he was so dissapointed ... a pure and utter waste of money ... they don't even make good coasters.

Summary: UK DVDs and Videos Not Viewable in the U.S.
Review: Although Amazon UK appears to have both Marx Brothers DVDs and Video tapes in stock, note that the DVDs are encoded for area 2 (Europe/Africa) and are not viewable on US DVD players. Similarly, the video tapes are PAL format (European TV) and will not work for US TVs, which are NTSC format.

This is really a shame. In these troubled times, the US *needs* some Marx Brothers movies.

Summary: Wish there had been reviews for this before I purchased
Review: As it has been mentioned by the others who have now reviewed this -
This 'collection' is not what it was described to be originally.

Fortunately, for those who are looking now - the description has
been changed to reflect the true nature of this collection.

Unless you need absolutely everthing every printed and or recorded
about the Marx brothers -- even the relatively uninteresting, this is not for you.

Summary: To help clear up some of the confusion ...
Review: As mentioned elsewhere, this collection does not include any of the complete films, but rather tv & misc. other clips. Since I will probably return the item, I haven't yet broken the seal and cannot comment on the quality. However, I should note that the total run-time is approx. 5 hours -- much less than one would assume for a 5-disc set.

If you are looking for more content information, don't bother with Koch Vision Entertainment's site. They are clearly not enthuastic about revealing more details about this release.

The discs are:
#1 "Inside the Marx Brothers" (this is sold separately, as well)
#2 "You Bet Your Life" TV Pilot
#3 "Papa Romani" and "Person-to-Person"
#4 "The Marx Brothers Radio Days" (is this just an audio CD?)
#5 "Marx Brothers Mixed Nuts"

For the price, perhaps it's not all that bad, but there still isn't a good set of their films out there yet.

The amazon.co.uk set DOES contain complete films (four of them, I believe), but the item seems to be no longer in active inventory. Be aware that it supposedly is lacking any meaningful DVD extras.

Summary: Another unhappy viewer
Review: As with others who purchased this DVD set, it turned out to be exceedingly disappointing. Not only was the description completely misleading, several of the DVDs are unplayable.

I will be requesting a refund. As an act of good faith, Amazon should pull this product (or describe it accurately) and allow other misled customers to return it for refund.

Summary: Kind of weak, kind of good
Review: First off, these discs are put together terribly. If you have trouble getting the discs to play, wait until the very end of the Passport Video animation. As it ends, start hitting your enter key repeatedly. This will bypass the bad audio loop encoded on the disc, and allow the presentation to start.

Disc one is a fairly decent documentary, actually. Disc two is the entire kinetescope of the You Bet Your Life pilot episode. Disc three has a really bad teleplay starring Chico, and then shows Harpo and Groucho on separate episodes of an interview show with Edward R. Murrow. Groucho's, in particular, was fun to watch. He does a song on a guitar with his seven year old daughter.

Disc 4 is an audio CD. Disc 5 has a few good odds and ends (like Groucho on the Jack Benny Show), but the stuff is edited and fragmentary. It's possibly worth it to see the rare sketch from "I'll Say She Is". All in all, this set is kinda weak, but has all the earmarks of something that will go out of print soon. Judging by how hard it is to find Marx stuff on DVD, it might not be a bad idea to get this while it's still available.

For Mega Die-Hard Mark Brothers fans, ONLY!

Summary: Amazon tries to weasel out
Review: Got this for a gift. Three of the discs won't even play. I was at least interested in having the content, so I sent it back to exchange. Amazon is deducting a "restocking" fee that is roughly half of the price of the set! There is no restocking to be done - it is a DEFECTIVE SET. They are not sending a replacement, apparently until I cough up another $13. The discs are defective. It is THEIR fault. The set rates 2 stars, the customer service is a 0.

Summary: Read the reviews of unhappy Christmas gift recipients
Review: I am a great Marx Brothers fan and have eagerly awaited the DVD release of the classic movies. I was suspicious of this set - based on price (too cheap) and cryptic description. The reviews bear out that although there are 5 discs in this set, they are NOT any of the movies, but reportedly a bunch of miscellaneous junk thrown onto discs. Amazon, which is a quality vendor, should heed these reviews - all bad - and drop this product immediately. Note that although this set was only released a few weeks before Christmas, there are already used copies for sale. Get it?
