Summary: A minor , early war classic with two iconic stars of
Review: the 1950's, Marlon Brando & Montgomery Clift. Then throw in
a real movie star, Dean Martin cast as he put it as "a like-
able coward". Likeable? Definately. A Coward? No. Dino befriends Noah Ackerman, played by Clift, a Jewish outsider, with a chip on his shoulder, before the war. They hook up again in uniform during the war. Noah is discriminated against & beat up by men in his own unit & his CO because he is a Jew. Dino puts himself on the line for his friend. It puts a racist face on our fighting men not often seen in World War II movies. Brando does a excellent job playing Lt. Diestl, a conflicted German officer. He is a sympathetic Nazi who doesn't always follow orders.
This is a lost classic, a forgotten but good early war movie. With the death of Brando perhaps it will be rediscovered.

Summary: Interesting but not entirely successful
Review: Although The Young Lions offers expert performances, the film lacks balance between what seem to be completely three distinctly different story lines, and any intelligent viewer can forecast the film's conclusion long before it occurs. Brando and Cliff are equally memorable in their roles, but interestingly enough it is Dean Martin who makes the strongest impression as a seemingly happy-go-lucky American solider with a more than slightly casual attitude toward military life. Thought provoking, and certainly more intelligent than most war movies, yet not entirely successful.

Summary: One of a Kind war movie
Review: Despite a few flaws, this is nontheless a fine and unique film, with a skilled cast, good production values, and a compelling, though episodic story. There are many outstanding and often disturbing scenes which linger in the mind long after viewing. I have seen it many times, and have always found it to be a thoroughly engrossing piece of work. Highly recommended.

Summary: Loved it - Hated it
Review: I loved this movie, but I'll never watch it again. The ending is just way too sad. The acting here is top notch and the story is wonderful. I especially liked the short but impressive role of the German Mayor played by John Banner (aka Sgt Schultz). Seriously, the movie is brilliant and this may be Brando's greatest role, but as I said the ending stinks, kind of like All Quiet On The Western Front, but at least in that movie from the previous war to end all wars, you kind of knew all along that the dude was gonna catch it. This movie is a real tone setter, like listening to Pink Floyd's The Wall, first thing on a rainy Sunday morning, it sets the tone for the rest of the day. Great Flick - Horrible Flick. You have to see it, but I would suggest not buying it until you do. Look for it on AMC or something.

Summary: Marlon Brando Makes You Und Offer You Can't Refuse
Review: In essence this shows how war can be hell. Brando plays a blond(ha!) Nazi who questions himself and his allegiance to the Nazi cause, he never seems to appear with other actors. The cast is also small with Dean Martin, Montgomery Clift and Hope Lange. Martina and Clift are friends and are drafted and end up together in the same unit where Clift finds jewish persecution is not occuring in Germany only and he continually fights every soldier. His wife, Lange is truly in love and sympathetic with his cause but warns him that if he continues he'll end up in the brig and never see is unborn child. The movie is trite and the only highlights are Martin(not singing or playing the stereotypical Italian) and Lange as the young bride! This is HOpe Lange's only B&W film and she was wasted in it as Clifts wife.

Summary: Monty is the reason to see this
Review: Just to clear up wronged info , Brando is the one who wanted his death to look like dying on the cross and not Clift. Monty wanted off the picture if Brando got his way. Monty is the only reason to see this film. No other actor can act with his eyes the way Clift can. Monty cut his lines because he can say more with his eyes than words in the script. Watch the scene with Hope Lange when Monty walks her home for the first time. No other actor could do what Monty does in that scene, it will steal your heart. Monty was the first of the new breed of actors, Brando followed and Dean came next.
