Summary: looks just like the middle east today!!
Review: This is historically close to history, a nice way to teach how things transpired in the Land of Israel via a drama that promises to keep you interested!! And notice the way it reminds you of the CURRENT Peace Process (and the future resolution to it??). Nice. No bad language, no nudity, safe.

Summary: Same
Review: Exodus is a triumph of cinema and never did it bore this viewer in its entire run. However, there is a problematic. The movie is one sided and despite the courageous depiction of John Derek as Taha - it did not go far to give a sense of the complexity of this issue from a Palestinian Arab perspective.

What is key here is to take into account the Jew as the Same. While all Arabs (Semites) in Lawrence of Arabia are dark, the Jew (Paul Newman, etc.) is white. I will assume for historical accuracy that the Jews on the "Star of David" are Ashkenazi and are of European origin. The key though is to view the Jew as the Same and to see his struggle from one side and despite small references to the Arab, the Arab has suddenly become the Other. Dangerous mysterious and faceless.

The movie rendition of the novel (and it is fiction) is shallow in its representation of the complexity of the middle east and should we should effect a re-viewing of the movie through Edward Said's foundational text Orientalism (which is available on Amazon.com). If we can allow for the complexity of the Jewish question and it is without a doubt complex - I think we can effect an understanding of the issue of Israel form the position of equals. The movie may have also done a disservice to the jewish issue through oversimplification.. Paul Newman is perfect for the hero role of Ari Ben Canaan - blond and blue eyed with the steely determination of a country looking for liberation from an almost entire history of victimization. Otto Preminger should be given credit for great editing and scope. However, the movie does fall short on the complexity angle and should be viewed with critical eyes.

Summary: Preminger's Definitive EPIC
Review: Preminger was always fearless, a gutsy bravado in the face of cowardice, and he shines through his films like a beacon of cinematic paradise. His works are always uncomromising, presenting tense situations, uncomfortable issues and ultimately human characters. His parable of man against man is revelatory of his views on his medium and life in general, man made conditions political and environmental propelling us against one another. EXODUS is another of his fascinating creations, arguably his greatest epic(see THE CARDINAL,IN HARM'S WAY,HURRY SUNDOWN), a dreamy ,haunting and ultimately shattering take on the unending struggle between the Jews and the Palestines. He never fails to wrap us in his world and refuse to let go.

Summary: Epic Exodus
Review: This is an excellent adaptation of Leon Uris' sprawling history of the Palestinian war for liberation from British rule. Otto Preminger shows his distinctive flair for meticulous craftsmanship and detail. This is one of Paul Newman's better roles that has been long overlooked. It contains a sensitive score composed by Ernest Gold.

Summary: A Classic Depiction Of The Struggle To Create Israel!
Review: I will readily admit to being a total sucker for spectacular movies, all the way from Spartacus to Doctor Zhivago, but I must admit to having a special fondness for this particular movie simply because it is also a story very well done. Paul Newman is young, energetic, and soulful, ready to whatever it takes to overcome the obstacles to building a homeland in Palestine for the Jews. We follow this pilgrim's progress along with a boatload of Jewish refugees fleeing from the recent horrors of the Holocaust into a world where they are less than enthusiastically welcomed.

Whether it be unctuous British officers played so well by Peter Lawford, or angry, hostile and finally violent Arabs who want to forcibly push the Jews out of what is their own homeland, too, the stage is set for the confrontation and set of historical events that resulted in the birthing of the modern nation of Israel. One learns more about the internal frictions and differences in opinions among Jewish compatriots regarding how to approach the quest for statehood. Some choose to adopt terrorism in the hope of pushing the reluctant British "off the dime", while other attempt to use statesmanship to remind the world of its promise to create a homeland for the world-weary Jews.

With wonderful cinematography accomplished in breath-taking Technicolor, an absolutely wonderful script, a historically accurate general story, and a cast of characters ranging from Paul Newman in his young and virile prime to Eva Marie Saint to the late Sal Mineo to beautiful young Jill Haworth, this is a remarkable, extremely well-done, and memorable film that will tug at your heart sleeves and provide hours of entertainment, and which should have a proud place on your video shelf. This is the perfect movie for that long and rainy Sunday afternoon when you want to escape to the world of film! Enjoy!

Summary: An Excellent Historical Drama- One Of Paul Newman's best
Review: Paul Newman did an excellent job as Ari Ben Canaan. Eva Marie Saint, John Derek,Jill Haworth, Hugh Griffith and Sal Mineo gave terrific performances in one of the greatest movie epics of our time. Rated G. Marvelous score by Ernest Gold. A classic timeless epic. I nearly cried at the end of this movie. It's a great way to spend 3 hours 28 minutes. Grab a bag of freshly microwaved popcorn and watch this great thriller.

Summary: Exodus (1960) with Paul Newman
Review: This book and video opened my eyes to the horrors of the Holocaust. I was deeply moved by it. This cured me of ever being racist in any way. We cannot let this happen again in history.

Summary: Book Beats Movie
Review: The book "Exodus" is a powerful gripping, novel that will make your heart beat VERY fast. Its all about the struggles of the Zionists in their fight for the state of Israel. The movie does a good job of portaying the characters: Newman as Ari, a strong and stubborn Jew in the Hagganah, Kitty, an American nurse that follows him, Karen, a teenage girl from Dennmark, and Dov, a survivor of the death camps of Europe. But I think the movie zaps part of the excitment out, and although it is educational, you need the book for backround.

Review: I have not yet seen the movie, but hope to soon. I read the book it was great.

Summary: Well done, but read the book
Review: The book "Exodus" was so gripping I couldnt put it down. I just had to see the movie afterwards, and was impressed. It delivers a powerful story how the Jews rose out of the ashes of World War Two and went on to fight for their homeland. Paul Newman is great as Ari Ben Cannan, determine to protect his country. Certain scenes such as the hunger strike on the ship and attack on a prison are full of suspense but lack the dramatic tension you get from the reading material.
