Summary: "There is no sincerity like a woman telling a lie"
Review: "Indiscreet" is a shockingly weak film considering the utter star power involved with this project. You have legendary director Stanley Donen, the man behind such classics as "Singin' in the Rain", "Funny Face", and "Charade". You have a jaw-dropping wardrobe of gorgeous evening gowns courtesy of Christian Dior. You have Ingrid Bergman, one of Old-Hollywood's most beautiful, talented, and scandalous actresses. And then you have the immortal Cary Grant; need I say more? Simply put, "Indiscreet" should have been utterly fabulous. Instead, it's utterly average.

Bergman plays Anne Kalman, a famous actress who falls utterly in love with a charming NATO diplomat, Philip Adams (Grant, of course), who also happens to be a married man. And that's about it for the plot.

The true weakness of this film is indeed in its simplicity. While simplicity is often the understated power of so many Old-Hollywood films, this is not one of them. As Anna and Philip fall even more in love, I found myself just waiting for the expected "relationship killer" to happen that will separate the love-birds and thus pave the way for the inevitable "I love you!" grand finale. Though the romance is indeed charming and takes full advantage of the charms and chemistry of Bergman and Grant (my absolute favorite actor of all time), "Indiscreet" is, in the end, a standard romance with absolutely nothing that differentiates it from the scores of romances already out there.

Summary: Yes, I'll Probably be Tarred and Feathered...
Review: ...for being the only reviewer NOT to love "Indiscreet". Every once and a while, this film manages to make it to the top of the bin at NYC's Channel 13/PBS, and then gets repeatedly shown for what appears to be a full month.

I will agree that Ingrid's apartment looks great and I would like to live there, yes.

But I find her and Cary's love affair, well, boring. I'm sorry! I mean, I guess it's good for them and all, but I just couldn't get into it. Here's the deal: This is a "grown-up" relationship where actress Ingrid had taken up with married man Cary. But then she finds out--but that would be spoiling it, and believe me, there's little enough going on so it would be a sin to let the only cat there is out of the bag.

Sometimes, also, Ingrid wears a type of negligee/robe that looks too much like a housecoat that more fittingly was worn by my mom and her sisters. It is too matronly for a woman who is supposed to be glamorous and sophisticated--I don't think it would entice Cary at all.

Upshot: Not so much "indiscreet" as "insubstantial". So many other things out there instead, like "North by Northwest" and "Gaslight".

Summary: A nice romantic comedy...
Review: Although this is not one of my all-time favorites, it is still a funny and charming film. In many ways, it is not as good as many of Cary Grant's earlier screwball comedies...but that can also be a matter of personal taste. The script is not as witty and frantic as the screwball comedies, but the movie is more romantic and is given a real sense of warmth by the affectionate behavior of Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman.

Essentially, Indiscreet is the story of a romance between actress Anna (Ingrid Bergman) and diplomat Philip (Cary Grant). There are several surprising twists and turns, and to explain anything more would be to give too much away.

Anyhow, one reason Indiscreet is such a nice film is that the real life friendship and warmth between Cary and Ingrid comes though very well, and they are very believable together! Indiscreet also has several funny scenes, especially the one in which Cary does a hysterical tap dance at a fancy ball. The two stars seem to be having fun, and you will too while watching them. This film is good for the whole family, and is very enjoyable: highly recommended.

Summary: A GREAT DUO STARS IN AN ELEGANT COMEDY.
Review: Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman are always delightful to see in a movie, because they were two of the greatest actors of their era. "Indiscreet" isn't the typical romantic comedy, because it's much more subtle than that kind of movies. Cary Grant appeared in a lot of excellent comedies like "Bringing Up Baby", "His Girl Friday" or "The Philadelphia Story" to name a few, but Ingrid Bergman wasn't the usual choice to cast in a comedy, perhaps because her specialty were the dramas ("Casablanca", of course). Well, despite that Ingrid did a great work in "Indiscreet".

In this movie our classy duo must overcome adversities of all kind, and to be honest, I didn't laugh out loud with "Indiscreet", but I was interested in the plot at all time. Perhaps a different casting would have resulted in a very standard movie, but Cary and Ingrid can make a good movie even better.

So if you are interested in movies where Cary Grant appears, or you are interested in Ingrid Bergman's filmography, well, "Indiscreet" is a good choice. Good movie.

Review: Charm and wit in a romantic comedy like no one - truly - makes anymore. Great stars and beautiful images of a long gone London.

Summary: Indiscreet, I Love This Title.
Review: Charming, gorgeous, elegantly paced film. Cary Grant was too hard to resist as I looked at the cover of this dvd, of Cary leaning up against Ingrid Bergman. I had to own this movie, I knew I would love it. Cary Grant dancing a jig is enough reason to see it. He was hysterically graceful. A must own classic for any romcom film collector.

Summary: Dark video + faint scratchy audio = big problems
Review: From the first frame of the opening credits it was clear that the transfer was from a poor quality master and that no restoration had even been attempted. The picture is morbidly dark throughout. The sound level is atrociously low - I had to turn up the amp nearly to reference level to understand the dialog. The soundtrack was harsh, with strings braying like castrated trombones. The picture popped out of focus at least a half-dozen times, and on at least two occasions large black blobs sullied the picture. Republic/Artisan pat themselves on the back BOTH before and after the movie, for what I do not know. The announcement following "The End" startles, since it and it alone is recorded at the proper level.

I just A/B'ed this DVD with the "35th Annivesary" widescreen VHS and except for sharpness (which is lost in the darkness anyway) the Video wins hands down: the sound is at an appropriate level, and the vividness of the (Techni)colors is astounding.

This one's definitely going back, and I'm afraid to open the copies of Operation Petticoat and The Grass Is Greener which were released at the same time as installments in the "Cary Grant Collection". BTW, none of these are marked as anamorphic so I'm assuming they are not.

Republic/Artisan: what the heck were you thinking?
