Summary: An Awesome Movie
Review: Mildred Pierce's second husband, Monte Beregon, is dead. And so the story unravels as Mildred tells her "story" to the police. It's all a mysterious cover-up. And is worth watching to the very end! I loved this movie!!! If you are a fan of the "classics", this is one of the greatest I've seen. Joan Crawford plays Mildred. She has two daughters, Veda and Kay. Her husband up and leaves them, and now Mildred must get a job. Kay catches a bad case of pneumonia, and dies. Veda, who is the older daughter, doesn't turn out to be such a nice girl. She grows into a coniving young woman, who bribes someone for money so she can get away from her embarrassment of a mother. Veda is played by Ann Blyth...What an actress!!! Veda is evil to the core, and Blyth really pulls it off. I'd hate to give to much of this movie away! It's a must see!! This movie is brilliantly photographed, and Joan Crawford is totally awesome as Mildred. I haven't seen many of her films, but it's clear that Crawford is in her prime here. She really plays this character to the extreme. She certainly did deserve the Oscar! The screenplay of this movie is great for it's time, and has some hilarious lines that are delivered dead on by the actor's. This is "film noir" at it's best. Go rent it!!! You won't be disappointed.

Summary: A DEFINITE 5 STAR MOVIE & A MUST OWN FOR CLASSIC FILM BUFFS
Review: I first watched this movie when I was in my teens and Mildred and Joan became two of my role models. I agree with the other reviewers and the Amazon editorial review - Joan's status as a film legend & icon is well deserved and if you need to know why, watch this film. The movie consists of one sassily written and dazzlingly acted scene after another. The actors and the costumes are total black and white eye candy. I still have the VHS version and many a lazy day I pop it in the VCR and let it repeat over and over while I work. I NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING IT and it has yet to become background noise even while I play it over and over.
A must-have.

Review: Joan Crawford is the greatest. Combine her talents with a great script, Michael Curtiz, and a nice supporting cast - magic is born. This is one of those movies that will never be outdated - and will continue to influence countless film-makers. I think it is Michael Curtiz' best film - including 'Casablanca'.

Review: What a great cast - Eve Arden with the smart quips, Jack Carsen as likeable know-it-all trying to score points with Mildred, Zachary Scott as the duplicitous lover (he was also in another Crawford film, Flamingo Road) and of course Joan Crawford in her Academy Award winning role trying to cope with her daughter (Ann Blyth) as a single parent and gain financial independence. This is a beautiful, sharp black and white film. Extras on this dvd are a feature-length documentary about Joan Crawford narrated by Angelica Huston and trailers from 6 of Crawford's films with Warners.

Summary: Art imitating life by a true HOLLYWOOD star
Review: There is something surreal about Ms Crawford's life and career and the way they intertwine to make a fascinating but entertaining study. MILDRED PIERCE the film seems to be a vehicle that Ms Crawford was born to play so uncannily does it seem to mirror her broader experiences ; with success from impoverishment to wealth; with men - the good man figure, the lazy aristocrat spoiled sponger male figure, the businessman hustler figure; with children - her relationship with her daughter which turned sour. Whatever the motivations, Ms Crawford and her character are driven, unhappy creatures, searching but seemingly unable to find love they so achingly desire. Melodrama? Perhaps, but a terrific melodrama. An excellent and revealing but ultimately sympathetic documentary narrated by Angelica Huston, is included and complements this fine film.

Review: It wasn't a highly scandalous book by her daughter (Mommie Dearest), nor the largely inaccurate, cult-favorite movie that followed. Mildred Pierce made Joan Crawford a legend. Here we are treated to Joan in all her gorgeous shoulder-padded, glam bitch, vulnerable downtrodden heroine glory. It is not only a magnificent, Oscar-winning performance, but a performance that established a true American icon. In life and in art, Joan will always be one of the true greats--and one that suffered the most unfounded and unjust persecution of any actress besides Frances Farmer.
