Review: To those that somehow managed to slip in less than 5-star comments -- I feel sorry for you and your apparent pessimistic beliefs about life; to be so blind must be hell. This film portrays heaven on earth - period.

Summary: What a great message
Review: I met Jimmy Stewart several years ago (God rest his beautiful soul) at a private club in Princeton, NJ -- the home of our alma mater, Princeton University. I had arrived at a private club in Princeton that I had just joined as its first Afican-American member and, hence, was very nervous. Mr. Stewart, along-time club member, suprised me while I was getting my meal and joined me for dinner. The club had given him my file and he knew a lot about me in order to make me feel at home. We talked about his life in the Army and in Hollywood and specifically about when he was filming this movie. He told me that when he was filming the now-famous scene in the bar, he felt so much for George Bailey that he began crying without any prompting from Frank Capra ! I heard this and began to cry myself. Each year afterwards, Mr. Stewart would come by my Reunion class tent (or I would go by his) and he would recognize me and say hi. Needless to say, I miss him and what he stands for. My wife and I are now expecting our first baby and I have some hard job decisions to make: go back into private law practice and make a lot of money (but never see my family) or stay in government. This movie helps make that decision easier but my tears will still flow ! :)

Summary: Long on charm, short on substance
Review: Largely dismissed by critics and audiences alike at the time of its release, It's A Wonderful Life has found popularity primarily through sheer repetition. Various copyright battles kept the film from the public eye for several decades, at which point the film was deemed of no commercial value. The copyright was then allowed to lapse, putting It's A Wonderful Life into public domain and creating a situation in which any television station in the world can run the film without having to pay royalities to the owners. And play the film they did, over and over and over, to a point at which virtually every man, woman, and child in the English-speaking world has seen all or part of the movie.And make no mistake: it IS a likable movie. The story is charming, if rather contrived and excessively sentimental; Jimmy Stewart, Donna Reed, and the supporting cast are effortlessly appropriate; and director Capra handles his material with skill. But it is unlikely that this film would have ever received a place of honor were it not for the fact that it has more or less been played to death on every television station in the country. Generally speaking, good though the film may be, it simply doesn't compare well with the rest of Capra's work, which includes such knock-out critical and audience favorites as It Happened One Night, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, and Meet John Doe; it lacks any significant wit in script; and the cast is hardly challenged by the material. It's A Wonderful Life is enjoyable, yes, and makes for pleasing viewing around the holiday season. But if you've seen it one time too many, you may be happier with Meet Me In St. Louis, a holiday musical which can actually bear the repeated showings that It's A Wonderful Life can not.

Summary: An American Classic
Review: "Everytime a bell rings an Angel gets his wings" With all the phones and such in the world having their bells replaced by electronic ringers it seems there probably aren't as many angels getting their wings, what I'm trying to say is that this movie shows the human spirit as it existed in the 40's....It also shows how much society has changed in the last 50 years. This has always been one of my favorite movies and this DVD transfer is awesome. The picture is clear and free of any distortions, the sound although mono is crisp and clear. To all fans of this movie this is a *****MUST HAVE*****

Review: I had seen a couple clips of this movie on TV and dismissed it as typical Christmastime fodder. But then, totally by accident, I stumbled across it on TV while vacationing in France. What a great movie! My favorite parts are in the middle, when Bedford Falls is transformed into evil Pottersville. (I had no idea that Spielberg had completely ripped this off for Back to the Future II.) And the heartwarming end--they just don't make movies like this anymore! Plus, the DVD is excellent, among the best treatment of pre-1950 movies I've seen (along with the same company's DVD version of High Noon, and the Criterion releases). It has a bunch of features, like a trailer and two documentaries, and plus it's been THX remastered. Buy this DVD now!

Summary: A valuable film for any person.
Review: In essence the film should have not made it at the British Box Office, but it did! Why? There are a number of reasons: 1.James Stewart provides a compelling portrayal of an avereage man who has felt isolated and kept-back by his personal circumstances. A winer who looks like a loser but is really one of the biggest winners of all. 2.Chtrismas, Brits are nearly as enthusiastic as you Americans 3. What we British se as an American ideal. 4. Christmas theme - and snow at that! 5. Strong values. But most of all there is a little bit of George Bailey in all of us, we would like to think that people see that part of our character most of the time.
