Summary: great movie, great DVD
Review: A great movie with an excellent transfer (probably the best pre-1945 digital remaster I've seen; the colours were as sharp as could be, the sound was great with only a minor hiss at times). The only irritation was the documentary: it looked slapped together, and why did they have Lauren Bacall host? She wasn't even in the movie!

Summary: A movie fan's dream..film noir and romance combined.
Review: What is striking about the movie first is its setting: The waystation between Nazi Europe and America. The characterization is excellent. Bogart and Bergman play opposite each other extremely well, and Claude Rains is absolutely fabulous. Rains is witty, well played, and his humor is well timed and dry as a bone. All around, there isn't one person who plays his/her character poorly. Even extras with one line contribute to the movie's overall greatness. See it. Overall, an excellent movie with a good story, and a GREAT ending.

Summary: Romance without sentiment.
Review: Whoever wrote below that the character of Sam was "shallow and subservient" doesn't seem to realize that this film was made in the early 1940's. It may not have been right, but that's the way it was in Hollywood. Judging old films by today's political standards will put you off about half of everything made before 1960 or so. This is the greatest romantic American film, ahead of "Gone with the Wind" because it never lapses into sentiment. The characters make tough choices and live with them. Oh, it's all subjective, who likes what best. But this film was beautifully and tightly written, directed and acted, without a trace of melodrama. It was made by and for grownups. Great stuff.

Review: Louis: "If I were a woman, I should be very much in love with Monsieur Rick"Louis: "She was talking about Monsieur Rick in a way that made me extremely jealous" "Louis, this could be the start of a beautiful friendship" - well, Louis would certainly like it to be! Louis Renault is a fantastic character, but he is also immensely camp and totally in love with Rick Blaine. Next time you watch the film, bear this in mind!

Review: Casablanca is that rare classic that never gets old and everyone can enjoy at different levels. It will probably mean different things to you at different times in your life. It doesn't get any better than this. The epitome of what Hollywood is (or should be) all about.

Summary: A Very Great Movie
Review: I would gladly be the first to knock this guy from Grand Rapids, MI out of first place. He's in "screech" mode, and he can't spell. I, for one, think "Casablanca" is a movie for all time. It stands as a vanguard of the movies of the era. I am saddened that they don't make them anymore. There was only one Humphrey Bogart, only one Ingrid Bergman and only one Claude Rains. I hope we all can appreciate what they contributed to our lives.

Summary: A BEAUTIFUL FILM
Review: THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE MOVIES OF ALL TIME I WATCHED IT IN MY HISTORY CLASS AND I NEVER SAW IT ONLY HEARD OF IT AND IT'S TWO MAIN STARS. IT TURNS OUT TO BE A WONDERFUL FILM. BOGART AND BERGMAN HAVE SUCH A ON SCREEN PRESENCE WITH THERE CHEMISTRY THEY SIZZLE. MAINLEY FROM THE SCRIPT IT HAS ALOT OF CHARM AND A HOLE LOTTA WIT IN IT THAT IS SOMETHING RARE IN HOLLYWOOD NOWADAYS THATS RARE. THIS IS WHEN MOVIES WERE BEAUTIFUL FLIMS. MY FAV CHARACTER WAS CLAUDE RAINS AND RENAULT HE WAS COOL. THE BACKDROP IN THIS STILL LOOKS WONDERFUL ALTHOUGH A BIT DATED IT SHOWS THE LIFE AND PEOPLE OF CASABLANCA. ALSO THE MUSIC FROM MAX STINER IS WONDERFUL AND GRAND IT HAS INTRUIGE AND SUSPENSE AND MOST OF ALL ROMANCE. FOR WHAT EVER REASON YOU LIKE IT FOR WETHER IT'S FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY TO THE SHADY CHARACTERS OR IF YOU JUST WANT TO VISIT RICKS OR WHAT EVER IT IS A GEM TO BE TREASURED FOR TIME TO COME I THINK THAT IT WOULD BE COOL IF IT WAS RELEASED INTO THEATERS AS AN ANNIVERSARY. LET'S HOPE. ANYWAY THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL FILM AND IS A GEM ALWAYS. AND IN THE WORDS OF HUMPHERY BOGART "HERES LOOKING AT YOU KID"

Summary: Don't believe the hype!!! I'd rather watch the Godfather.
Review: First, for anyone that does not know, widescreen format did not gain popularity until after 1950. Since this movie was released in 1942, there will never be a letterboxed edition. Second, I found the character Sam very shallow and subservient. I was appalled to hear Ingrid Bergman call him a boy. Third, the cinematography was closer to average than groundbreaking. Clearly, this movie was originally a play. The backdrop in the driving scene was more than obvious. The plot tended to be predictable. Orson Welles, Stanley Kubrick, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, and many others have done much, much better. Much, much better.
